Okay that's it. Tell us now how Solas will be in DA4 and what will happen. You're probably going to be right. ![]()
There is something that has been bothering me - Why did the Evanuris label Solas as the "Dread Wolf" ?
If he is going against the Evanuris, wouldn't it be better to label Solas as the "Heretic" or the "Blasphemer" or something that is anti-theocracy ?
Does this mean that wolves in ancient Elvhenan are associated with heresy, blasphemy and rebellion ? Which is weird because wolves in nature run around in packs and mate for life. Wolves should stand for loyalty.
Logically, shouldn't Solas be called the "Dread Fox" ? Because foxes are sneaky, smart, cunning, and are always up to something.
Any theories ?
I think it depends.
On the surface, the Evanuris labeling their enemy "The Dread Wolf" was an extremely silly thing to do. I mean, just look at that title, it's intimidating as hell. No wonder Solas took it as a badge of pride, it's like the Evanuris were trying to legitimize him as a real threat.
But, there's a couple things to consider here. First of all, the fox/wolf thing - this is a different culture, with different associations for all the animals, and while we may consider "fox" to be a better motif for a cunning character, that doesn't necessarily mean the ancient elves did. (On the same note - owls aren't symbols of wisdom but harbingers of death, bears aren't ferocious warriors but keepers of secrets, so and so forth.) It's quite possible that the elves associated wolves with cunning and trickery. After all, what basis do we have for assuming foxes are sneaky? Th - This is a legitimate question, I never understood where that superstition came from.
Secondly, the "wolf" part may have come before and the "dread" part after. He was once friends with, if not part of, the Evanuris. He certainly seemed to be in service to Mythal, and given that there's a wolf statue hanging out in her Temple, he was probably be associated with the animal prior to starting any rebellion. Knowing that, there are any number of reasons why he might be the Wolf, none of them relating to cunning. Maybe he just thought wolves were cool, I dunno. (It's actually worth noting that even the "dread" part may have come about at this time, too)
Thirdly, there's the implication in the Crossroads that Solas can kill someone by driving them mad with fear, and as Dreamer he was probably talented with bringing about nightmares. So, the origins of "dread" are pretty obvious there, especially if he used a lot of fear tactics in general.
Fourthly, we know the true translation of "harel" is "rebellion" or something. So Solas may have just been indulging the shoddy modern translation of his title rather then correcting it. Or the writers just forgot about that whole lore tidbit.
This is kind of neat: It's a 2-hour video of Matt Rhodes and his brother, Tom, chatting about doing game concept art (Matt) vs illustration (Tom) while Matt draws the OC of a follower who won the RnD Fantasy lottery last week. ^-^
Posting it for all the artists in the thread (there seem to be a lot!)
I have a lot of respect for those of you who can draw in a program like Photoshop. If I were to get back into drawing it would have to be old school paper on pencil.
Edited to add: Hee... at 32:28 Matt confirms that Solas' pendant is supposed to be a wolf's jawbone. So that answers my question from a few posts back.
Edited to add: At 1:16:57 Matt tells us he's been doing some beat boards... As far as I know, he is not involved with the new IP or ME Andromeda. So they are likely for DA4. Needless to say this makes me happy.

I just find it odd that a guardian of a High Dragon (Mythal can shapeshift into one) is a Wolf. Shouldn't it be a Drake ? Though come to think of it "The Dread Drake" sounds quite silly.

Yeah, a wolf with black fur and six red eyes that stands as tall as a two-story house.
Fits plenty if you ask me.

The six red eyes and the size are what would really make it stand out. Black wolves are pretty common in Thedas if the wolves of Crestwood, the Hinterlands, the Emerald Graves, Emprise du Lion and the Exalted Plains are anything to go by! ![]()
I kinda have a feeling I’m arriving late to a party as I finished my 1st run of DA:I in December. Could not play it earlier as my computer could not run it properly and I hate playing this type of games on consoles (plus we only have last gen and god the game is ugly on those).
So when I got money for a new computer, I of course had to play Inquisition.
And guess what ? 1st playthrough, Dalish Mage Inquisitor, romance with Solas. Ouch, right in the feels. Played Trespasser right after (I feel luck I didn’t have to wait for it) and cried my eyes out.
Since then it’s safe to say I have developed a ‘slight’ case of Solasbsession (yeah, I’m making up words).
(I’ve replayed DAO and DA2 in the meantime)
Right now I’m in my second playthrough, this time as human rogue and romancing Cullen, ‘coz for once I’d like to have a happy ending but I’ll have to make a third to re-romance the sexiest bald elf in the universe.
But honestly despite my broken heart, I really feel it’s the most interesting romance story wise and the fact that's it's with a smart, sexy elf doesn't hurt.
TL;DR
Heart broken and obsessed. Need a support group of sorts
Okay that's it. Tell us now how Solas will be in DA4 and what will happen. You're probably going to be right.
I'm scared of my own brain D: What if I predict doom and tragic portents D:
Can you throw the prediction? Tell us happy things? And make it sound convincing? 'Cause if enough of us believe it, DA4 will turn out happy, right? Like with spirits?

Then we all here in Blanketfort will deal with it together and comfort us mutually ![]()
OK, we just need to add:
Fortunately, because the queen had spent a few years once organizing an enormous army, and had been wise enough to remain on good terms with several of her former allies, she was able to pull Thedas together a second time. With the help of the 'brethren of the air' (restored along with the elves), the dwarven Shapers of the Stone, and Mythal's Well guardians, they were able to defeat the Fire Nation and bring the world into a new age.
(And now I can't unsee the Qunari with their dreadnoughts and gaatlok all in Fire Nation livery, the spirits dressed in the ochres and yellows of the Air Nomads, the dwarves all dressed in the greens of the Earth Kingdom, and Abelas and Co. all wearing the blues of the Water Tribes.)
I predict ummm... Lavellan is able to change the dread wolf's mind with the power of love, they are reunited and ascend to become king and queen of the uplifted elves. They have 2.5 kids, a fade green picket fence, a golden retriever. They live happily ever after
Until one day, when the Fire Nation attacked

Don't forget the part where Lavellan makes a touching yet dignified sacrifice of her own life, and Solas is so in awe of her purity that he relinquishes his own divinity so she can come back and usher in a new pantheon of super-special-goodness.
God it's like every terrible fanfic I've ever read.

"Heretic" would give his ideas some weight, brings him to the level of rebel or revolutionary.
Wolves were previously guardians of the Emerald Knights, so it's probably reasonable to assume the ancient elves had them (partially) tamed. By calling Solas a wolf, they're insulting him. They're not saying "this is a person with threatening ideas", they're saying "oh look, this is just Mythal's attack dog". The "dread" is a way to make the insult more flippant, similar to when Morrigan says "the dread old gods were nothing but dragons". He thinks he's scaaaaaaary, how cute.
They absolutely don't want to portray him as cunning or intelligent. Their goal is to totally discredit him, make him seem unhinged, aggressive, or just plain stupid. Pay no attention to him, he's a little poodle that barks at everything passing his mistress's house.

2.5 kids? What is that even supposed to mean? Do I want to know? Cause half a kid sounds a bit creepy XD Or is it half elf/half wolf? ![]()
Anyway.. not entirely Solas related but I finished my fenrisxhawke drawing and am super happy so I need to share the joy somewhere XD Here it is if anyone wants to have a look xD http://almasy87.devi...f-you-587766475
Another art post.
~snip~
Some Fen'Harel and Lavellan WIPs. Oh my...
Spoiler
I really like this six-eyed thing, but it's a bit weird to apply it to Dragon Age due to my gaming background of Guild Wars where everything six-eyed is associated with Abaddon, god of secrets.
Hmm thinking about it a bit it's kind of funny the parallels. Abaddon lead a rebellion against the other five gods. Unfortunately for Abaddon his rebellion didn't go as smoothly as the Dread Wolf's and he was imprisoned in a plane of existence known as the Realm of Torment.
Loaded up some old saves to try to get some screen captures of my Inquisitor. I really like this one because her body language suggests she believes she is every bit Solas' equal, which is how I imagined their relationship until Trespasser. Trespasser threw her for a loop. ![]()
Heyho Solas thread, just peeking in ![]()
By curiosity, are you guys going to do something Solavellan for St Valentine or the coming 6K? ![]()
2.5 kids? What is that even supposed to mean? Do I want to know? Cause half a kid sounds a bit creepy XD Or is it half elf/half wolf?
just a joking reference to the average western happy family, with the kids, the dog, the white picket fence, the classic 'dream' xD something about the average number of kids an american family has - 2.5. because it's an average of data is why it isn't a whole number
