I'm not sure it's complex emotion that surprised him as much as positive emotion (Of course, I also don't buy the theory that ancient elves had heightened sensitivity to emotions in any capacity. I just write Solas' Tranquil comment off as analogy,

As a highly sensitive person and empath, I've been making jokes recently about finally understanding Solas (since most people have low sensory processing and aren't as tuned into emotions, sensory experiences, or details) and making Veil jokes. :P

But then Lavellan proves she's different, just by being her. She's kind. She listens. She understands, or at least tries to. It's another reason why I think he bleeds approval so much in the Hinterlands - because it's the very beginning of the game (Where he still whole-heartedly believes mortals are all walking jerkbags.) where you contradict this belief of his just by... being nice to people. Putting flowers on a grave. Giving food to the hungry. And the interactions you have with him - his genuine surprise when you acknowledge the fault of those Dalish who have discredited and attacked him, How taken aback he is when you say you'll defend him if anyone in the Inquisition tries to threaten him.

It all gave me the impression that he's just... he has no faith anymore. In anyone. In their ability to do and be good. On a low-approval run, that lack of faith goes completely unchallenged. If anything, it's supported. But by just being nice and treating him like a person, he starts to doubt. Over just a bit of kindness.

S'no wonder he gravitates to the Compassion spirit, huh?

I posted something similar in the writing group, but if I were to magically find myself in Thedas (and I guess, were an elf), I'd probably have a high chance of something mutual with Solas because I'm a sensitive, empathetic, curious, inquisitive, and kind sort who likes helping. And I'd love his stories, learning about cultures, history, people, all of it. Except for, you know, there must be red flags of evasion that don't get excused with the Fade, like "how old are you?" :D

And I don't really fall for people for looks or gender so personality, being attracted to someone for who they are, is my thing and good thing this is fiction, because I think I'm Solas' type.

One question I kept asking myself after finishing the game was "Why does Solas love Lavellan?" I wanted to come up with a good answer to that (And it pisses me off so much that a lot of fanfic just skims over this, that so many seem to think good romance just happens if you shove characters together long enough, no point to bothering with, y'know, chemistry or character growth.) And it stumped for a while, because I thought "Solas is so old, and has seen so much, what could he possibly find new or exciting about some mortal girl? What does he see in her that he needs? Something he's not getting from anyone else, and probably can't get from anyone else?" But Trespasser made the answer clear - he loves Lavellan because she catches him so off-guard. He expects mortals, all mortals, everyone in this broken future, to be selfish. Short-sighted. Crude. Everyone he meets, he writes off as such. He probably wrote Lavellan off as such, in the beginning.

*snip*

Yeah, based on how Solas describes things in Trespasser (and Felassan's unspoken conversation with his mysterious boss, whose emotions and reactions he seemed to already know before he did them), I always figured ancient elves had mild empathic and telepathic abilities; being able to "sense" each other's thoughts and emotions in a similar but less potent way that Cole can.

*snip*

Possibly not just ancient elves (or maybe this just supports the idea that the Old Gods are somehow related to the Evanuris)... If you have an OGB Kieran, then it's pretty apparent that he and Flemythal are speaking telepathically at one point when you meet them both in the Fade.  They sort of stare at each other for a bit and then Flemythal agrees to whatever Kieran just said/asked that we could not hear. (Watch it here.)

Several minutes before that, he does mention that he heard Flemythal calling to him, which might be her visiting him in dreams, but it might actually be her telepathically calling her, as well.

We see this kind of thing with empaths now but it would be interesting to play with the idea that the Fade increases this ability.  Solas' empathy is at even more heightened levels than you'd see in a typical 'sensitive' because of his still strong attachment to the Fade.

You're not a freak, it is a personality type.  Some people are just more tuned to emotions and others around them, myself included.  Often ones that are stronger can develop issues because of it.  Example crowded places can make the more sensitive empaths highly uncomfortable, the more so the longer they have to stay there.  It makes sense if you think of it.  If they're essentially able to pick up on emotional energies of people being in a crowded places like a mall would be overwhelming.  This could also be an additional reason Solas seeks solitude a lot, he may have to recharge so to speak.

Also I'm not talking anything psychic here energy is energy.  It is simply cause and effect just on a more subtle scale that some people can't pick up on as easily.

Agreed.  I love the slow build fan fictions when it comes to Solas romance or any romance really.  I hate it when characters are just thrown together because the author wants it.  Especially with a character like Solas, he wouldn't just fall for any woman.  There has got to be something special about her, some way he connects to her on a deep level that is surprising/a bit terrifying to him.

I knoooooooow. I can't describe how many fanfics - fanfics that are otherwise pretty damn good - where the romance is just "Ohp, they oogled each other's ass for five minutes, I guess they're in love now." C'mon, give me interaction, true and heartfelt interaction, that showcases perfectly why these characters are drawn together - no "We're fated to fall in love" or "I just love your soul so much!" crap. Give me the details.

Ah, really? I used to lurk in the Writer's Thread, but then it hid the discussion from me because I'm not a member and I was just like =] Okay...

I know Corseque on Tumblr writes a lot about it, and I was trying to pin down the one post where she talks about it at length, but I think it's actually spread over several posts (And some tags...) so, uh... yeah. Check her out, I guess?

I don't have any high sensitivity; I'll be the first to admit I'm crude and dense as a brick. But this made my heart sting a little, because of how the word energy is used.

I think a slightly more clear and accurate way to call it instead of "energy" would be "subtle emotional clues" that some people can be more sensitive to.

I really enjoyed reading this interesting discussion though.

I'd call it "subtle emotional clues" as well :) Despite being a massive introvert, I can pretty confidently call myself an empath (well, at least when I'm not a ball of anxiety curled around myself) - I can fairly easily tune into a person's emotional state and imagine myself in their shoes; but there's nothing... hmmm... unusual in the process of guessing the emotions. I catch myself observing subtle clues - body language, tone of voice and words used, actions and so on, and then just use my imagination to try and approximate what they feel and how I'd feel in their situation.

I think many people with heightened empathy do so very intuitively, and like with many intuitive things (and intuition itself) it's easy to ascribe some otherworldly qualities to these processes.

Yeah, nothing otherworldly about it, it's just behavioral biology/psychology :D A lot of these emotional signals are hardwired, since everyone is better off if we can read when we've pissed off a fellow member of the herd or made a potential sex partner sad. Most people can instinctively pick up what a frowning face means, and I figure hypersensitive people are just *extremely* good at picking up those signals, just like folks with musical talent are good at hearing whether something is on key and follows rhythm. Maybe in Thedas you need a connection to the Fade for that, but over here it's just genetics. :D Thaali did mention they don't consider it a psychic thing, it's just that calling it "energy" conjures all these associations with various voodoo, so I thought I might mention it.

Now if there was a way to grant empathy to those who don't have it naturally. It can and does make things harder sometimes.

Well in Thedas we don't just have empirical proofs that the Fade exists - it's a home for embodiments of various of sentiments and feelings :D

They're real, they get affected by people and they can affect people in turn. In fact, we know from existence of Tranquil that sundering people from the Fade seriously messes up with their emotions and ability to feel things. Hence an otherworldy component to empathy - or something more than that (empathy can give us an insight into someone's emotional state, but it certainly doesn't give anyone Cole-like abilities to pretty much hear their thoughts) - I think is pretty much a given.

Gorgeous art of Lavellan and Solas reading in the rotunda.

Anyone knows what's up with alternative Skyhold pyjamas and boob windows? Seriously, roughly half Skyhold PJs mods feature them. Where did it come from? Did I miss something?

This cracked me up:

Yes, being really empathetic isn't magic, you're better at reading the subtlest of clues, but there is something also to intuition and that can maybe surprise people sometimes.

It took me a while, growing up as an open, sensitive child who got bullied very badly, to learn that not everyone experiences the world in such a heightened way, nor has the same levels of empathy and understanding. And now I'm adult who pokes fun at being a fluff mallow, but appreciates who I am very much and the strengths it offers.

Though I relate to Cole, there is stuff there that's definitely supernatural at work. :P

It's just how mods are. Eventually modmakers will make outfits that showcase a woman's boobs and then lo and behold, people use them.

I gotta admit, I never saw the problem with the beige pajamas to begin with. It mystified me that it got so many complaints and criticism. I'm not crazy about any of the alternatives they have either. I tried putting my Lavellan in that white drake-skin outfit (I was going for a red-and-white color motif for her) and it ended up looking like Elvis (Elfis?) in a rhinestone-studded jacket.

Granted I'm also sitting here in a pair of blue-striped pants and a lime green t-shirt, so, maybe my sense of fashion's broken.

For me it was the mesh more than the color. I didn't hate it, but I thought it was meh (and I'm in the minority who liked the Halamshiral outfit). When they came out with the leather jacket, boots, and leggings, I fell in love with them instantaneously. Otherwise I dress as a hobo IRL.

I never had a problem with the outfit either.  It was bland but eh.  Then I made a human male character.  First time I saw him in that outfit I laughed myself silly.

The problem I had with the beige pajamas is that it was ugly dull. That, and the outfit looks pretty much like what people call it--- pajamas. I can't help but feel like my character looks like she just got out of bed.  (I know Skyhold is your home and all but this is a bit silly.)

But then again, at least it was much easier to draw compared to the modded Skyhold PJs with their intricate designs. :P

I haven't yet used the Wardrobe feature but I have an idea of what I want my Lavellan to wear.
