I just wanted to say that I was rewatching 007 SKYFALL, and listening to Adele's intro, I felt like it was totally my Lavellan (I'm just saying mine cause I know she would have assisted Solas if he had given her the chance ) that could be singing to him..

I still really struggle with this. On one hand, if Solas is being manipulated and used/forced into what he is doing, that probably would make him "less evil" in the eyes of many. But that just feels cheap when he's been worked up to be what, so far, looks like an incredible anti-hero. I like the idea that he is fully responsible for his choices and accepts the consequences. Not someone's puppet, or a tragic victim of someone else's manipulations. Just a person that accepts who he is and won't hide from the reality of his faults, flaws, and decisions. That's what makes me such a fan of his. I respect that in an individual like nothing else.

 

That's also what makes him so different from Blackwall, by the way -- Solas accepts and admits to the terrible things he did or will do. Blackwall tried to pretend himself away from it, at least until Trespasser. He can be redeemed, sure, and I liked him fine after that, but before he was just a phony who refused to own what he'd done. Lame. (Not the character or story, just the person Blackwall was living as.)

 

But... the idea that Solas gave himself totally to the cause with the belief he was doing what was necessary and then it turns out he is betrayed, geased into something he would never have done? That would be an incredible moment to see. Done well, it would be heartbreaking and tragic and perfect. Done as a matter of course, here's Solas' "get out of evil free" card, I'd be very disappointed.

 

Hmm... an interesting twist, maybe, would be to have Solas know he's being controlled, and him trying to formulate a plan on how to break out of that control. It could also explain why he's so insistent on pushing Lavellan away - he doesn't want her being controlled too, and without her, he's lost the one person who could stop him and free him. 

 

...But personally, I don't even really like that as much as him being in complete control of himself, and just deciding this is the best course of action. Yes, it means Solas is capable of doing terrible things, and it means he willingly decides to do those terrible things, but I think his character really isn't as impactful if he hasn't got complete agency over himself.

I find it very unlikely, for variety of reasons I or others have mentioned and one other thing: Solas is ALREADY someone who's been betrayed to the point of breaking. He doesn't really trust anyone; not even his well-intentioned lover, or friend. He killed Felassan for insubordination. He continually tells Inquisitor NOT to trust his friends and warning them of ally's betrayal. He directly tells Lavellan he has difficulty trusting people and she throws his lack of trust in her into his face when they meet in Trespasser.

 

For Mythal, or anyone else, to betray or use him now in malicious way, would not only undermine Solas agency - it would also undermine one of the biggest shortcomings Inquisition has spent a lot of time establishing he has and will ultimately most likely try and learn to overcome: his trust issues.

 

And after all this, after making all the hints that he's afraid of being betrayed and hurt again to a point he doesn't trust anyone, and that restoring his trust and faith in people is likely the way for his redemption... he's just going to be duped by Mythal?

 

Yeah, no. No matter what their past or current relationship is, no matter of Mythal's schemes, I just find it implausible.

I've always thought that Skyfall fits both Inquisition's plot and Solas's character arc perfectly.

 

Also the arc of the Dwarf Wardens from Origins. Aside the obvious way you can fit it to the Fifth Blight, "A thousand miles and poles apart" can be seen as the cultural divide between rich and poor in Orzammar, "Where worlds collide and days are dark" refers to the city and "You can take my name, but you'll never take my heart" refers to how they won't let being an exile or persona non grata stop them from saving their people from themselves.

But to get at the point you made here - while Flemythal may have been testing Morrigan, I don't think she at all expected Morrigan to turn on her so completely. She was genuinely wounded. Even that line she gives as she departs - "You were never in danger from me." And said with such solemn regret, too. Like she's saddened that it even needed to be pointed out. That Morrigan didn't know. That's not a reaction I'd expect from someone who know they did wrong and saw retaliation coming. It's the reaction I'd expect of someone who thought they were doing a good job and were honestly astounded to be told otherwise.

The fact that she's saddened and regrets the fact doesn't necessarily have to stem from Morrigan just turning on her. The fact that her daughter throws her the fact that she was a bad mother in her face would hurt either way, especially if Flemeth actually cares for her daugher in any extent. In that way it's no different than Solas hurting and looking genuinely wounded after he dumped Lavellan, or after they meet in Trespasser - it's pretty obvious that he has to be aware that she has all the right in the world to be mad at him, but can't help being sad, and even somewhat defensive at points.

 

Flemeth also looks sad and very regretful when she tells us that 'what was could not be changed" and "so long as the music plays - we dance". As if she knows that things have to be done and sacrifices have to be made. So her having a moment of regret after Morrigan brings in that Flemeth has basically sacrificed her daughter's happy childhood for a goal bigger than both of them is by all means plausible. Like Solas, Flemeth chooses her perceived duty or goal over personal happiness, including that of her family, which doesn't have to mean that she can't regret it, especially when she's forced to confront it.

 

I don't think Flemeth was at all testing Morrigan for... I dunno, emotional resilience. 

 

Yet it was Morrigan herself that brings up the fact that Flemeth was testing her, even though we aren't yet certain in what way.

 

 

Remember, everything Morrigan tells you in the Origins, all that she says about the meaninglessness of love and beauty and friendship - that was all drilled into her by Flemeth. The idea that only power and survival matter, and everything should be sacrificed on that altar - those are Flemeth's values, instilled into Morrigan, and repeated back to the Warden. I find it very, very hard to believe she told Morrigan all that just to see if she would break from it - especially since, for someone who secretly wants to see love and idealism to prevail, she doesn't hesitate to break out that geas on her. 

 

I have a different opinion, obviously - given the events, be it in DAO and Inquisition I actually find it possible for Flemeth to act that way. I'd like to point out that Morrigan isn't even very sure why exactly Flemeth sends her with HoF - she THINKS it was all about the creation of OGB (or future possession), but when we confront Flemeth after Morrigan asks us for our help to kill her, she seems predominantly interested with observing what Morrigan will do and where that adventure will lead her... as if this was indeed the main goal.

 

And oh, I'm pretty sure that a lot of Flemthal's cynicism and importance of survival comes from a genuine place - I'm not saying that her coldness was all just an act. She is a broken shadow of a person, in many ways - even if she could display motherly love, I have a suspicion she may think she's not capable of it anymore. In that respect she's - again - not very different from Solas, who himself lives in conviction that the only things left to him in this world are his mistakes and that, either way, he'd hurt people he cares about. That doesn't yet stop Solas from harboring faint hope that love and idealism will prevail deep down somewhere - in fact, approved Inquisitor may be to Solas what Morrigan is to Mythal.

 

Only that, in case of Solas, the existence of people like approved Inquisitor is an utter surprise - in case of Mythal... well, I think in that regard she actually be slightly less cynical of two apostate hobos

 

It makes me wonder if her designation as the patroness of motherhood is meant to be ironic - "Here's the elven goddess of mothers and, whoopsie daisie, she's actually really terrible at it." (You could draw some interesting parallels with Hera here, actually.)

 

There are more interesting parallels between Mythal and Nemesis, IMO. Still, according to Solas, Mythal isn't supposed to embody ONE aspect motherhood. She's both protective and fierce. She embodies both motherly love AND parental authority, and possibly, at best of times, strives to balance the two.

 

 

It'd be an interesting twist to me, at least. And even if that's not the case, Mythal's primarily the goddess of revenge, and has obviously been stung by betrayal (Which inspires a great deal of revenge, naturally) so I wouldn't be surprised to learn that even values she once championed - good parenting, for instance - have been twisted by this desire. Maybe Mythal really was warm and caring and the picture you'd expect of the paragon of motherhood. Flemythal, however, was not. She says it was her betrayal and vengeance - not her love - which drew Mythal to her. (And doesn't Morrigan say she was alright with her husband basically selling her to some lord for power? Also not a stunning display of love and idealism.) She just doesn't strike me as a champion of love, or as someone who'd be particularly thrilled with it's victory.

 

No, it wasn't her husband selling her to some lord for power - and she called for justice NOT for her "selling" herself into second marriage, but after her new hubby have betrayed her and killed her first husband.

 

Also - what does Mythal tells to Inquisitor she goes into a bit of detail of who she is?

 

"She was betrayed, as I was betrayed - as the world was betrayed".

 

It appears that this is more than just petty personal desire for revenge. Which is why more than a goddess of a concept as general vengeance, Mythal for me appears to be specifically a goddess of retribution - a holy wrath, if you will. This is likely why she was goddess of justice in the first place, and why I find interesting parallels and goddess of vengeance from Greek myths. It may also be why many of her statements during meeting her in DAI appear as if she perceived her destiny as duty, rather than something utterly personal.

 

 

Of course, another idea I've always really liked in regards to Mythal is the idea of a traditionally good concept (Motherhood) twisted and corrupted into something nasty. We think of mothers as affectionate and supportive. But all throughout the games Flemeth has been nothing but secretive, cryptic, and authoritative. Which is another aspect of motherhood, isn't it? It's the "Sit down, shut up, and do as I tell you" aspect. I think it'd be incredible if it turned out that that's the type of motherhood Mythal embodies - not maternal affection, but parental authority. It'd be such a subversion on the idea that motherhood is an inherent good.

 

Like I mentioned above, Mythal appears to be embodying both aspects. I'd agree that at one point or another the balance between the two was likely disrupted, but I find it unlikely that parental authority is all that is left.

 

How should I put it for it to make sense (uh, pardon my linguistic shortcomings)... the "battle of generations" appears to be a pretty strong theme in DA series. It's not surprising, given that generational conflict is one of the staples of our tales, from myths to stories written today. "Parental authority" for me is something that is associated with the side that is unwilling to make space for new generation - they're the Kronuses and Zeuses of our tales, harboring more or less secret resentment for children that would ultimately replace them and interested in keeping their status and authority rather than budge.

 

And aside from all plethora of organizations in modern Thedas doing exactly that (and pretty much all of DA protagonists representing the new generation), it also strikes me as an issue with Elvhen pantheon.

 

Thing is... Mythal appears to be the one on the other side of the conflict.

 

From hints and snippets we have, she appears to be the one interested with making space for new generation - and change - to come. She expressed regret over ways of old being impervious to change. She seems to have more or less secretly supported Solas' rebellion. She wrangled other Evanuris in iron grip (which in itself is probably a reason why she probably grew cold and terrifying, having to deal with them at all times). She keeps hinting at the coming of a New Age rather than return of old.

 

Oh, she still probably moves things in a direction SHE thinks is optimal, and we're yet to see if she's right in that regard - but there are hints suggesting that she appears to be genuinely interested with that new generation succeeding. Whatever she prepares for Morrigan (or Solas) it doesn't appear that she wants to leave the world a burning pile of embers.

 

And it'd even make sense, given that there's such a theme of good corrupting into evil in this series. Justice into vengeance. Wisdom into pride. Compassion into despair. And with Flemythal, love and motherhood into cruelty and tyranny. That's way more interesting than "Goddess of love really loves love" to me.

 

Considering that we see corruption everywhere, Mythal actually prevailing (despite not all  of it being as sweet and fluffy and easy as "goddess of love really loves love") would actually be a nice change of pace, lol. Aside from the theme of corruption, there's also a very strong theme of perseverance against all odds in the DA verse.

Yet it was Morrigan herself that brings up the fact that Flemeth was testing her, even though we aren't yet certain in what way.

 

I suspect it was was a secret test of character to see what kind of mother Morrigan was and whether she'd compatible to become the next host of Mythal. Since Mythal took on the persona of the mother goddess to the Elven pantheon, this is obviously something that means a lot to her and would be a requirement when finding someone she'd gel with in terms of personality and beliefs.

 

So when Morrigan admitted that Kieran was not a pawn anymore but her son, and refused to give him up even if it meant sacrificing herself to her mother's bidding, that was what precisely what Flemeth wanted to hear, as that demonstrated her fierce sense of motherhood.

 

This is not to say that Morrigan isn't just as worthy of being the host for Mythal should Kieran not exist, merely that his existence allowed Flemeth to have another way to check if Morrigan was the right person for the job. Morrigan tells us that getting pregnant was her mother's plan for her in Origins, so it does seem like Flemeth wanted Morrigan to have a child.

Watched the scene again and I... I'm still just not getting this reading? All of Flemeth's talk of destiny and fatalism seems to be more in relation to what she will do in order to satisfy Mythal's vengeance, not what she has done, much less how she has a broken relationship with Morrigan. Her upbringing of Morrigan isn't even touched upon until Morri makes that "I will not be a mother like you" comment, so I don't think she was talking about that at all. 

 

And actually, I think the comparison with the conversations you can have with Solas just prove my point further. In the initial break-up he seems pained and off-balance, as Flemeth seemed at Morrigan's accusation. But after, during the Trespasser conversation and in the follow-up you can have before the end, he seems more resigned. Guilty as hell, but accepting of all the bile Lavellan can throw at him. Expecting it. If Flemeth were in that same situation - knowing she did wrong and confronting the wounded party at last - I'd expect her to act more like Solas in Trespasser and less like Solas in Crestwood. 

 

I just - still don't think it was all some test. Either way, on her reactions in that scene alone, we can tell that she didn't have Morrigan has well-figured out as she thought. Which, you know, furthers my point that she's not that great at understanding and manipulating people. Events and knowledge, but not people.

 

(And also, upon watching the scene, I noticed Flemeth seems surprised, not proud or satisfied, when Morrigan says she sees Kieran not as a tool but as her son. Again, not the reaction I'd expect of someone who was secretly testing her all along.)

That's... what I meant? She was alright with her husband selling her to some other guy, so, obviously not too crazy on love, or at least not in the traditional fashion. She certainly seems to value power and wealth over it.

I disagree - I think this is precisely personal desire for revenge. Flemeth wanted revenge on those who wronged her - Mythal gave it. Now Mythal wants Flemeth to exact revenge on her betrayers too, and that's the duty that she must fulfill - the music she must dance to, so to speak. The "world's betrayal" is a factor in that motivation maybe, but a secondary one. (I also disagree somewhat on her being specifically a goddess of holy wrath - partially because I'm pretty sure it's mentioned that she listened to and acted upon the injustices of mortals, and partially because, seeing as how she's a goddess, all of her wrath is "holy." Pointing out that she's of holy wrath specifically is... kind of redundant. She'd have to be mundane for her wrath to be of any other sort.)

So... intergenerational conflict? I can where you're coming from. I disagree on the point that it's a strong theme in the series (I'd actually say that it's not a theme at all outside of Inquisition.) but that's a small quarrel, and not one I'm really in the mood for fighting.

 

But again, I'm not sure Flemythal's interested in anything as drastic as world change or utopia. She knows things are changing, and likely speeding it along, but I feel like she's more using it as a tool than doing it because it's her heart's desire. Revenge really seems to be the central concept and motivation to her character - personal revenge in particular. *Shrug* Call it a shallow reading if you want, but her motive rant was a snarlly speech on betrayal.

So we've established Solas' parallels to Anders are pretty strong. The more I think about it though, the more I believe that Solas is going to turn out to be in the end, not "Anders up to 11", but more like both Anders and Fenris up to 11. Though that only works if its true that he really was Mythal's servant/slave, was her wolf, the powerful creature she kept on a leash to threaten the other magistersgods with, like Fenris was Danarius' "little wolf", and the parallel is that like Fenris, Solas' chains aren't completely broken, though how these chains would/could manifest, emotionally or physically, is yet to be shown.

WOAH WAHOOOO! That would be .. OH MY GOD.. never thought about this possibility. But it seems rather unlikely. Our dear Harel must have had a similar relationship to Mythal like Loki did with Frigga.

IF I am not completely confused, Mythals was supposed to be the Mother of the Twins Falon'Din and Dirthamen (???????????). And she got betrayed by her "counterpart" the 'Allfather' Elgar'nan, as well as her Son Falon'Din (Dirthamen porbably just stuck along with his bro). Felmeth (idk in which game), said something about; Ueeeeh! We were both betrayed by 2 men we trusted!.

But I am not sure yet what the first people actually are, as the Fade showed statues of fully donned Cherubs (when you meet Felemth).

The Cherubs didn't looked very human nor Elvhen, they had ridiculous long spidery legs, at least 4 arms and another set of 4 wings. Also Solas contradicts himself often, when you get bad blood with him and you accuse him of not believing in gods, he'll tell you something about, that they were no gods but something different. In Trespasser he tells us that they were mere mages, but on the other hand he talks about "THE FIRST OF MY PEOPLE DON'T DIE SO EASILY". This confuses me about the origins of these "FIRST", what are they actually??

Also they are these Titans, they said that the Titans must have come after the earth or what they call it was created (I belive this was even stated in the DLC).

On a somewhat related note: I found out today that David Gaider's found work with a studio called Beamdog, along with Brent Knowles (The designer who oversaw most of Origin's development.) and some other ex-BioWare talent. Beamdog, if you didn't know, was the studio behind the updated releases of Baulder's Gate, and currently they're working on an expansion for BG called Siege of Dragonspear.

 

So it seems like the studio's an attempt at recreating "Old BioWare." Interesting. Given current BioWare's somewhat tarnished reputation, i wonder how they'll be received...

It'll always astound me how varied and oftentimes diverging the perception of a given character or story is. Sometimes I'm just looking at things (not necessarily from DA fandom) and I'm like "... Have we actually watched/read the same story???  "

Well he looks indeed like Solas, just not EGG Solas but HAIR Solas so xD TIHI
