If the mod manager would be advanced enough for us to add stuff you would most definitely some bushy manes on that Egg-head of his.

HEH HEH HEH

Yes, but I hope that day never comes
While I don't mind changing hair for my character, I do not like mods that completely change an npc, specially a companion's look. If they can be so drastically changed what's the point of the people who created them to have worked on their looks etc?

If everyone can have a different type of Solas who knows what might come out.. He wouldn't be Solas anymore  :(
He's just an egg :P he had hair in the past, and now he doesn't :P People need to learn to Deal.With.It.  *Cassandra's voice*

Not only ain't that nothing like Solas, it's also.... why a vampire, what the heck? A vampire with a pointed tongue even.

So, basically, they give us a character we fall in love with and we express it by depicting him as something completely different from the person we were introduced to? Figures.

Eh, I wouldn't get too offended, because there are a few things to consider.

a) It's vaguely similar to some early concept art where Solas had long brown Mohawk dreadlocks and an insolent smirk.

b ) I didn't get the impression that he was supposed to look like a vampire, but vaguely like a wolf who just devoured bloody flesh. ("Dread Wolf!")

c) Again, early concept art of Solas, who looked more "Dread Wolf"-like. Patrick Weekes has placed Solas in his mid-forties (apparently by ancient elf standards), which led to many people to speculate on how he might have looked when he was younger. Then players learned Solas is the Dread Wolf, which led many to speculate how he looked in Ancient Arlathan.

A lot of people combined the meta early concept art with how Solas might have looked earlier in life, and so use the early concept art as a loose model to depict "younger" Solas and "hair" Solas. In a way, it also vaguely fits since Solas admits in-game that he was "cocky and hot-blooded" when he was younger, and the early concept art and "younger Solas" fan art movement both often have him look pretty insolent. This is just one of many examples (observe here, here, and here); and, in my opinion, not even the worst of them.

Personally, I think as long as people make it clear it's supposed to be "younger" Solas (based on a time when we technically didn't see him) or "alternate universe" or whatever" Solas based on said concept art, not "canon during the game run" Solas, there's not much harm done. It's all in good fun. :)

(P.S. And, let's be honest: we all knew fans were gonna give him hair and try to "sexy" him up. If they were gonna do it anyway, I'm just glad they took it from a semi-authorative source like early concept art made by the devs, instead of whatever design they made up in their heads.)

(P.P.S. ALSO, given how unattractive baldness is considered in our culture, I actually find it really admirable how few Solas fans actually create fan art or mods to give him hair. Yeah, some do, but when you look around they're a small minority compared to just how many fan artists and screenshots portray him in all his pale, mild-mannered, egg-headed glory. :D (ALISTAIR seems to get his appearance modded beyond recognition far more often, and he's more conventionally handsome than Solas!)

For all his flaws, Solas still is admirable for his humility. This is most evident in his banter with Sera.

While most people would scoff at her little band of troublemakers, Solas takes her seriously and debates on how Red Jenny could evolve as a group.

And when Sera makes a good point about how injustice never truly ends, he acknowledges it and ends the discussion.

The concept Solas interpretations, I'm not a fan of. Even if he was cocky, he's very much still capable of anger and cockiness as the Solas we know, just different, tempered. But things like how he reacts to the mages responsible for what happens to Wisdom. You say his name and he comes back to himself but if you let him give into his "hot blooded" reaction, he'll kill them and you get that glimpse. And when he talks to Bull about the Qun, for example, or Dorian, he's cocky. And guess what, he's bald there. :)

The concept Solas is concept art. Vivenne was originally white. Sera had different hair. Concept art is dropped because it no longer fits the character they've conceived. So, to me, that is someone else, not 'Solas'. Remember that Weekes said Solas used to be a direct liar. That concept Solas looks like liar Solas, great elven deceiver.

Solas bald and graceful, that is Solas to me.

Obviously, people have their own preferences and interpretations, but I like the few who interpret younger Solas as bald. Even though baldness isn't something I am generally drawn to (I love playing with someone's hair), it's not a dealbreaker. And it's part of him, IMO.

So I always skip over/scroll past the art with hair and stuff. Fine if that appeals to people. Just doesn't fit "Solas"  to me.

Yeah, that's something that bugs me whenever people are like "Why couldn't BioWare have given him dreads?" or "I totally would've romanced Solas if he had hair!"

And it's like - they choose his look for a reason. Dreadlocks, sidecuts, even that gray buzzcut one design gave him, they were made as concept art and remain concept art because they don't match his character now. He's supposed to appear wise and sagacious, monk-like in his spirituality, and a little unassuming and plain. (And let's not forget that good ol' bald = evil stereoype.) None of the other concept designs really strike at that like his current one does. That's why they're concept designs.

(As for the "well that's how we looked when he was younger" theory - I'm a little more accepting of that, but I still don't entirely like it, if only because I think dreadlocks and sidecuts look stupid. Also that wolf skull thing. God he should've been laughed out of Arlathan with that dumb skull accessory. Can you imagine how unhygenic that must be?)

Well, according to his murals - with pretty certainly him on it - in Trespasser he's been bald for a veeeery long time; the (more than likely) earliest one he's painted was from dealing wit Titans and that was possibly a whole aeon before his rebellion.

Spoiler

The whole dreadlock thing has probably never been anything other than a concept.

....Though, to be honest, I don't think ancient elves had to worry about any sort of hair decorations being unhygenic... Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if some of the eccentric had a whole, living menagerie decorating their coiffures and garments :D

I play with bones all the time at work at a nature interpretation centre. Get one that's been properly cleaned by beetles and boiling and they're beautifully white, clean, and hygienic.  ^-^  I'm pretty sure ConceptSolas' is clean, if it even is a real skull. It's far too small and the rostrum is too short to belong to a wolf skull, but it could be a bobcat or lynx's.

I'm firmly in the "Solas is bald and I love him that way" camp, too. I don't mind the idea that he might have had hair in his youth, so I honestly can't say I begrudge the fan artists who portray a young Solas with hair. My pet peeve, which might not sit well with many of Solas' fans, is the 'egg' nickname for him. Now, I know the people who use it do so because they find it cute and affectionate, but it really makes me cringe. If he were a real person, I would find that nickname disrespectful and cruel since it is based on an aspect of his appearance that he has no control over (unless he did magic his hair away to express grief or for some other reason, as some fans surmise).

I'm not fond of the Egg thing but I've accepted it at this point as a fandom thing that stuck. And it seems to be meant affectionately, most of the time.

I think when DA Keep released the egg-head romance tile on Twitter, that kind of sealed the acceptance.

He might also be bald simply because he likes it/finds it easier to take care of. I know most people think baldness is unattractive (Or an attempt to hide baldness patterns by just cutting to the chase.) but I think some people can pull it off really well. I think Solas does. (Especially in Trespasser. I don't know if they tweaked his model, or if it's the lighting, or if developing for the last generation was just bringing down the character designs, but he looked great in Trespasser.) Vivienne does, too.

Alternatively, baldness is in this weird place where it's really striking... but also really plain. You know? Like, it's a pretty bold choice of haircut, but it also erases your hair (obviously), which is one of the most easily identifiable characteristics about a person, and it probably makes it harder to distinguish him from any other bald elf. He could also confuse any attempt to find him by growing his hair, especially since no one would know his natural hair color (and it might've turned gray already besides.) Any of that would be invaluable if you're expecting to go on the run eventually.

Word.

I try not to be tightarsed about it, but I do sort of make a "bleh" face when I see it used to refer to Solas. It's fandom and it will remain forevermore, but it just seems so... nah. Nice to know I'm not alone, I suppose.

Also +1 for playing with bones. :P

Art post.

This was shared before but now the artist put these two artworks together in one post...

Lavellan with Solas during Trespasser, and then 17 years later with her son (and a badass prosthetic).

Gorgeous pencil sketch of Solas.

Solas in a skin-tight bodysuit with fur. :P (NSFW-ish for a bit of bulge. ;) )

Ink sketches of Solas, Cass, and Cole.

Oh, I like the shading and light effects. Beautiful art style.

Chilllll~

[...]

Well he looks indeed like Solas, just not EGG Solas but HAIR Solas so xD TIHI <3

I am chilled. And I did not speak of the hair. I mean the face. I will try to show you (the artist may forgive me):

solaas.jpg

I don't think these two look alike. Solas has a much shorter chin. His eyes are firm and strong. Also his eyes don't pull up at the sides but rather down. His eyebrows are closer to his eyes. His cheekbones aren't that small. The nose is not so thin and not so boringly straight. The ears are bigger, the jaw is more masculine. All in all Solas looks more like a man and less feminine like this manga boy. Even considering the age difference, he cannot have looked so smooth a few years ago.

Also I mean the attitude. That manga boy is your typical sexy vampire. (And, yes, I stick with it, it is a vampire, not a wolf. A wolf might tear his prey to pieces, mouth bloodied in the process, but that's it. The manga boy tastes it instead, licks it off his lips with pleasure. That's vampire, not wolf.) Impish grin, blood feast for the fun of it. But Solas probably wasn't like that. He was more of a revolutionary, picking fights because he believed in change and the expected results. Not because he found it so sexy how red liquid would drip from his pointed tongue. Blood would have been a side effect and maybe dismissed, not cherished like a glass of fine wine.

Eh, I wouldn't get too offended, because there are a few things to consider.

[...]

Again, the hair, we've had that. I like Solas bald, simply because the moment I saw him I had to think of a monk. Like a shaolin warrior monk.

3291b2c7a2f9e8473ba4caef352f965c.jpg

And it fits for me. His persona, his behavior, his actions. And there's two options: Solas just lost his hair (men who lose their hair tend to have a problem with that, so I wouldn't shove it into his face) or he prefers this style (in which case we have to accept it). Anyway, I don't care about the hair.

I just dislike when a picture implies a personality to me (like the vampire type) that doesn't seem right. And the concept art of him, while showing him with hair, still isn't too far away from the person we were introduced. A little less stiff, grinning a tad maybe but still sort of Solas. Still the man who wants to save the world by all means necessary. "The end justifies the means"-type Solas. Revolutionary Solas. Not a man who enjoys killing because the blood is so tasty and matches the color of his eyes.

tumblr_ngrelxseAB1rk1cx8o2_500.png

Solas is a Batman, and he will always have been a Batman, even if younger and more hot-blooded or cocky. People don't go from Deadpool to Batman only by aging.

I'm not much of a RPer and every Inquisitor I make generally follows a similar path with few variations, and most of my decisions, turning Cole into a human, imprisoning mages/not disbanding Templars, allying with the Wardens, blabla, I end up racking a lot of disapproval from Solas and this usually ends up with me getting Solas' disapproval scene (I've gotten it like 3 times throughout all my playthroughs lmao).

What I'm asking is there any way to '' farm '' approval from Solas easily and without getting much disapproval from my other companions? Is there any specific place I should take him to (I think Hinterlands is good, he generally reacts positively if you help the people out)? I know asking him a lot of questions racks up some approval but that's pretty much it.

I don't generally like Solas, but I would like my next Inquisitor to at least befriend him so I could give him a fair chance. Hell, I could end up liking him. So any suggestions? I think next run I'm going to disband the Templars for one, and try to bring Solas along everywhere. But it's going to be hard, since I'm going to romance Bull, and Solas n Bull don't really mix well and generally disapprove on most things. Love their banter though! I especially respect Solas for calling out Bull on all the Qun bullshit.

Oh! Okay! I, uh, just took a screenshot of it then I cropped it. :P

First press the "Print Screen" (Prt Sc) key (if you're on Windows), which takes a shot of your entire screen. Then open a program like Paint or Photoshop. Open a new blank canvas then press CTRL+V to paste the screenshot you just took. Since you just want to show a shot of a particular area and not the whole screen, you'll need to crop it. Both Paint and Photoshop have a crop tool for you to crop the image with.

Er, I hope that explanation has been some sort of help for you. ^__^;

EDIT: Oh hey! Top again!

You've basically answered all your questions yourself.^^

That's really it. Ask him questions, but not all of them. Let's say... ask him questions but never question him. Be pro-elf and open-minded regarding spirits. Ally with the mages or subscribe the Templars. Help the people in the Hinterlands. Don't kill his spirit friend and let him kill the mages in his personal quest (which I don't ever do) or later explain him why you didn't want it.

Regarding dialogue the DA Wiki lists all approval points you can get.

Usually I have a good mix of decisions he approves of and disapproves of. I always end up on good terms with him. I find it very difficult to annoy him enough.
