I have played Mage characters but the issue I have with playing them is that they are not Wizards but they are Sorcerers. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Mages but I prefer to play a character who was not born with inherent special powers, who had to develop their skills through study and practice.

 

Yes I know Mages have to practice and study to develop their skill too but its like developing one's X-Men mutant powers or one's Biotics. I prefer to develop my character's scientific proficiency and tech skills over mutant powers and Biotics.

 

In DA realm, that means playing Warrior or Rogue. I simply prefer Rogues. In DAO, my Rogue Warden was a master in Herbalism, Poison-Making, Trap-Making and Runecrafting (in addition to Combat Training and Coercion).

See, that kind of magic bores me a little.  I much prefer a setting in which magical abilities are a gift to a few over 'everyone can do magic if they work at it'.  My canon Warden, Hawke and Inquisitor are all mages (and mostly elves), and my Shepard is an adept (and dating an adept). The only game where I prefer playing a rogue over any other class is Skyrim (but in that I'm playing as an Altmer rogue with Illusion magic.)

I play rogues and some sort of stealth character in almost any game that allows for it, so that's just a style preference. And usually stabby rogues. Hence my trail of lady assassins, thieves, and snipers all over the place. But when it comes to lore and setting, I also prefer magic to be a thing that is a gift for a few. Though I had a stabby Dragonborn who occasionally opted to smite enemies with some magic too. That worked okay enough for me. In general, though, unless there are other reasons that would make me not want to play a stealthy, stabby character, then I normally will. My Shepard, as an Infiltrator, had her class inform her backstory for me. She was kind of a haunted mess with serious trust issues who started working alone for survival reasons. I also wound up playing a Ranger in Guild Wars 2 for a while because I made a Thief originally, intended to be stabby, but she was supposed to be the character I played alongside my boyfriend, but he quit.
