But again, removing even one limb or both doesn't do anything to nullify the mage's inherent magical ability.

The Mage Inquisitor doesn't lose any of their power by losing an arm, merely the ability to use it and their staff with the same adeptness they had before. It's entirely possible that they'd eventually learn to compensate for the loss of the limb and even be able to use the staff with one hand in the future, just not with the same skill or flashier moves they could pull off previously.

From what we know of magic in the DA universe, it always finds some means to channel itself. While we're told that it's near-impossible for hedge-mages to learn Circle spells because their magic manifested so differently that it's locked them out of those skills, we don't know if the loss of a limb has the same affect or that someone couldn't relearn the same spell with one hand instead?

Well that's... what I've been saying since this debate came up a few days ago. A mage Inquisitor could conceivably relearn how to fight, even without the arm.

But, I also said that I don't think the staff really majorly effects anything, which was how we got to this particular turn of the debate. And I still stand by that mostly, so...

...Although, I guess what Tea suggested could be true - staves are mostly useless to using magic, but they're a crutch that modern technique relies upon heavily and many mages just don't know how to do anything without them. Not impossible, given that spell-casting seems to mostly be a mental effort, so removing the staff - even though it's basically just a placebo - means the mage will be unable to cast as well because they don't think they should be able to. Sort of like how biotics in Mass Effect don't need all those flashy hand movements, but they're taught to new students as a mnemonic device.

It would explain why mages without staves can still cast and be a threat, but mages who rely on them draw power from them (And are of course diminished by their removal.). It might even answer the question of why the Circles hand out staves to the mages - make them think they need it to cast, and they won't be as good without it. (Doesn't answer the question of why they let Circle mages run around with staves all the damn time, but I suppose every fight with Circle mages would be a total push-over otherwise.) And it does gel with the fact that all mages we've seen cast without a staff are using magic the Circles didn't teach them. But, it doesn't contradict the entire Circle storyline by revealing a trivially easy solution that everyone's just ignoring for no reason.

Huh. I like this explanation.

Well then.

Complaint rescinded, I guess. Sorry about all that.

Oh right, I forgot - the rattus comment only fires if f!Lavellan removes her vallaslin.

Therefore... LOL... Corypheus turns out to be one of the few NPCs that comments on Sollavelan

Darn. I was happy with my Lavellan keeping her vallaslin at the time, but I wish it didn't mean losing dialogue like that.

No worries, I probably got the wrong end of the stick somewhere, mea culpa.

Mythal already lost most of her powers when she was killed she became a wisp of herself what I said earlier was what good is Mythal if she is gone forever like literally been absorbed by Solas

Which makes Mythal even more badass. Most of Solas' current power comes from a fraction of her own. And that already was enough to make him a lot stronger.

We don't really know what else Solas did during the 2 years between end of main game and Trespasser (like all companions and Inky, he is stronger at the end of DAI as well), so it might not necessarily be just Mythal's power that makes him stronger. Add to that the fact that since he has his original body, that spark of blue magic may or may not be more... hmmm... compatible with him.

Whenever I kept my vallaslin the only comment I got was Corypheus commenting on my Inky proudly wearing slave marks.

The only people who'd consider cutting off a mage's limbs to deal with their magic, probably are guards who think it's easier than calling Templars, or simply enjoy being cruel.

I can see Qunari do a similar thing, after all it is implied that they cut their mages tongue...

Maybe there's a reason lorewise that mages can't channel magic through swords or daggers as easily as they can with a staff,

Use an enchanted sword or a dagger for a magical ranged combat is unsuited since the swing of such weapons is in itself a lost of energy,i can see the usefulness of magical bows but then again magical projectiles seem to be more practical than enchanted arrows ( unless these arrows wields phenomenal magical powers Ala Andruil)

Maybe? But that begs the question of why they don't just smear lyrium over all their sh*t - why stop at the staff?

In order to cast a magical projectile of a staff apparently the mage don't waste mana or willpower, while a mage can use magic without a staff they use their mana to do so,while the simple magical projectile of a staff don't require the loss of willpower to happen.

Taking my dog to the vet, (for skin problems) wearing my Solas wolf jawbone necklace. I wonder if any of the vets or vet techs will know that it is. :P

Haha, I would probably squeal like a fangirl (newly graduated vet here) XD I have actually wondered about the anatomical correctness of the wolf jaw, but I haven't gotten around to comparing them thoroughly yet ^^ Nerd/vet project for the future :D

So having gone through Trespasser again recently, one thing still kinda confuses me.
Now, possibly, Solas didn't want to go through his long and elaborate backstory, but it didn't seem implied that he was once one of the Evanuris. Rather, that he was (assuming Cole's dialogue was referring to Solas) a servant of Mythal who removed his vallaslin and rose up in rebellion. Maybe he was one of Mythal's highest ranking servants and went rogue, while she provided support. Maybe he was just a regular elf that liked to travel. But his beef with the Evanuris seems more personal than overthrowing the local feudal overlords.
So what's with Fen'harel iconography being everywhere? If one of Mythal's former top guys, that would make sense as an extension of her authority. Dirthamen would acknowledge Mythal's authority over him without the embarrassment of another god's image in his temple. But if not, then the wolf statues everywhere is kinda odd. What does everyone think Solas's relation to the rest of the Evanuris was?

I have actually started to think about if Fen'Harel was some kind of guardian of the Elvhen people and not Elvhenan in itself, maybe summoned/made real by Mythal the Protector. A majority of his statues are placed in doorways/passages and other kinds of transitions between areas, or on high overlooks (maybe to symbolize him watching over the Elvhen, like a guardian). And his statues are everywhere O.o
Then maybe he was created with a geas or compulsion to protect the Elvhen people, regardless of what threatened them. A bit like General Zod hehe, whose sole purpose was to protect and preserve but can't adapt and see value in a new world which ultimaltely leads to destruction and massacres.
When the Evanuris started to go power-mad and hurting the Elvhen, Fen'Harel did the only thing he could think of to protect them by creating the veil. Now that he has woken up and seen the effect, he must protect (revive in this case) the Elvhen once again regardless of the cost but he must still control/contain the Evanuris somehow (the "I had plans"-comment).
And I don't mean that he is some unthinking machine, but that his compulsion to protect the Elvhen (not modern elves) is so strong since it was the purpose he was created for. But he can still feel incredible guilt about what he is about to do.

Sorry if my writing and thoughts are a bit underdeveloped and all over the place, I haven't slept well for 48 h and I still haven't had my coffee XD

Edit: Zod is a lot more rigid and ruthless though, so the parallell is not perfect but the slight similarity hit me when I was discussing the "evilness" of Zod with a friend who had just seen Man of Steel. I just got the feeling that he was a relic of his time and culture, with one sole purpose which really cannot be applied in the modern world. So in a way it is quite tragic and sad.

Don't think any of you guys remember this, but I mentioned a couple of months ago that I had a friend try out DA:I on my PS4 (she hasn't had time to play much since, but Solas is still her "bestie"). I now gave her one of my extra copies of DA:O and told her to play it on her PS3. She was very skeptical at first, but it only took a few hours for her to fall head over heels in love! She has become quite obsessed with it (and she's really not much of a gamer at all), and I tease her mercilessly with dramatic sighs and comments like "Oh, so you like that character? Well, uhm..."   :P

She has accused me of being evil incarnate. I'm having a hard time disproving that claim.

And a suggestion for those who want to leave solavellan hell for a couple of blissful hours is to watch BBC's miniseries "Pride and Prejudice" and "North and South". Colin Firth as Mr Darcy and Richard Armitage as Mr Thornton.   <3  <3  <3
