So today I had been thinking about Solas and how everyone immediately assumes he must be/have been Wisdom, or at least, that's what he most aligns to even if he were never actually a spirit. We are kind of given some hints in that direction, being told a few times that wisdom corrupts into pride. And, Solas's name means Pride.
What we aren't told in this game, and what we should probably have gathered by now, is that different spirits can still be corrupted into the same basic "type" of demon. Command would also probably corrupt into Pride.
What I remember of Solas talking about being a hot-headed youth, and the dialogue with Sera where he says, "We were all young once..." Solas wasn't wise then. And we have, for the most part, seen that his decisions and poor planning speak of something other than wisdom now. Maybe what he did was the only way at the time; we don't know. But that doesn't make Solas wise for changing the entire fabric of reality. Proud? Yes.
But there's more to it.
The one thing that Solas seems to value above everything else, is freedom.
(But no, he's interested in the ancient Elvhen! you say--and yes, that's true too, but wait a minute...)
Solas didn't want a body. We don't know if this were because he planned to leave the one he had and become a spirit, or because Mythal forced him to manifest physically. Thereafter, someone, probably also Mythal, bound him into service--or so it seems to listen to Cole, who implies that Solas burned off his own vallaslin, leaving that little scar on his forehead. If he were a spirit of freedom, being geased is likely when he began to be corrupted into Pride, if the transition from spirit to flesh hadn't caused it. He was in a situation that went against his nature.
So, Solas set himself free. Then, despite claiming he thought Mythal was The Best Evanuris, he set about trying to free the other elves. All of them. In a time when such ideals essentially didn't exist--Solas may have been the only one in the ancient elven times to think that slavery was wrong. Again... Freedom.
When you hear his banter with Dorian, Solas is most angry about the enslavement of elves and spirits. He's not pleased about the fall of Arlathan, but the slavery and Dorian's apparent lack of concern for the slaves infuriates him. As a modern person it bothers me, too. Knowing Dragon Age lore, it's even more disturbing--those slaves Dorian says are kept like family members are often the first to die when a sacrifice is required for some mage's blood magic ritual. Being treated well, or like family, doesn't mitigate that. But I digress.
When Cassandra (I think) asks Solas what he believes in, he says he believes in the right of all free-willed beings to exist or something of that nature. Again... he's worried about freedom or the lack thereof.
Oh and remember I mentioned the Elvhen tie into this too? Well... his people are trapped. Trapped in the eluvian network, trapped in uthenera. If I'm right and he is more "freedom" than "wisdom," then that goes so utterly against his nature that he'll do nearly anything to set them free again--not just because they're his people but because they are trapped and they should be free. It's also telling that the worst punishment he could think of was not death, but eternal entrapment.
I'm probably 100% wrong. There's really no solid evidence for this thought that I had. It's just that, to me at least, Wisdom feels like a poor fit for Solas, even taking into account that he's at least partly corrupted into Pride. On the other hand his concern with everyone being free... that fits a different profile.
But I would like to hear others' thoughts on the matter!
