You know, someone once asked Patrick Weekes if Solas is naturally bald or not. Then he decided to be a smug ass and gave no real answer.

But I think it's pretty clear. People with a shaved head still retain a little shade, a remainder from the hair that was there.




But someone who truly lost his hair is completely smooth.


How did it happen in Solas' case? I don't know, maybe some magicky stuff.

Of course, this is just curiosity. I'm not saying there is a problem.

Considering I had to help my husband shave his head, after an "Oops." moment with the clippers, trust me.....it can look completely hairless/bald, even if they aren't actually bald. My husband is half Greek with thick salt and pepper hair, he just normally keeps it short (clippers with #2/#3 attachments).

And for the record, "fixing" said "oops", by shaving it all off, was clearly the wrong way to go! (In my husband's case )

Now for a much nicer looking bald head....

Gotta love those intense colors.

Considering that we've never had an example of a person "shaved" with magic and hence we can't tell whether it leaves a shade or not, I don't think we can just base things on how they are IRL.
 
Plus, I recall that a while ago Weekes indeed say on his twitter that Solas likely just uses a spell that prevents hair growth.

Maybe it is the consequence of training very hard to become a stronger mage.

I actually theorize it's something done before entering uthenera, or any other version of a super long sleep for ancient elves...

 

Hair would probably get in a pretty awful state after a few hundred years.  So you'd want to remove it.  And then Solas is out in the wilderness all the time, so letting it grow back, assuming he ever had hair/can grow it, would be just as inconvenient as sleeping for hundreds of years and letting it collect dust/attract rodents/etc.

 

Vivienne calls Solas an unwashed apostate hobo, but really?  Solas looks pretty clean, even if he's a bit ragged.  And, again, having no hair on your head would make that easier.  Less personal grooming to attend to, no tangles, no worries about matting or dirt or blood in your hair...  Honestly, aside from a sunburnt scalp when you're not in armor, bald might be the way to go if you're battling your way across Thedas.

So for any of you who are reading my modern woman in Thedas fic,  I finally cranked out Chapter 5 of Vir Arla'nehn.  This chapter has lots of Solas in it.  More Solas than originally intended, actually.

 

Sooner or later, Cassandra, Varric, and Adaar will have to return.  Until then, enjoy the extra Solas time.

 

This latest chapter was a total pain in the butt to write, but I'm finally pleased with the results.

Ok, first that outfit is awesome.

 

Secondly, the orb drew my attention for some reason and made me think. I wonder if the lines carved into it are like wrinkles on the cerebral cortex of a brain. the brain has wrinkles so it can have more surface area and hold more information. Maybe the grooves are carved so that the orbs can hold and focus more magical "information" in the form of energy? It could be (and likely is) purely aesthetic, I know. But these are the thoughts my brain has at midnight on a Friday.

How do you get these shots? My game won't let me pause during these scripted cut scenes. Do you angle the camera ahead of time and rerun the cut scene from a save then take the shot while it plays out (thus you have to go back and rerun from the prior save each time you need a different angle?)

Flycam allows you to pause cut scenes (Home button). So I pause the scene, position the camera, take picture, reposition camera, take picture, etc.
