What's the codex supposedly written by her? And more to the point, I wouldn't exactly take someone's diary entry to be a reliable description. Let's use Solas as an example - just because he would be willing to write "I'm a despicable monster who will kill hundreds of thousands to bring back my vision of a world that may not even be worth restorting, except to assuage my guilt" doesn't mean any of that is a fair description of him.
The codex entries aren't written about her. The entry reads that they are stamped with a stylized halla in place of a signature which many took to mean they were written by Ghilan'ain - and why I said I don't really subscribe to them being written by her.
Here:
http://dragonage.wik..._of_Enchantment
Obviously it doesn't say, I am Ghilan'ain and I write these things blah blah which is why I keep saying IF. But obviously this wasn't someone writing about themselves it was someone writing about their creation of magical items and using "stock" like living creatures/people to create these items. A person who does that is kinda messed up. But it may not even be Ghilan'ain. If it was Ghilan'ain writing these entries then she's kinda messed up. Conversely if she was not the one who wrote these entries we still cannot assume she's an all loving mother-type because she created a bunch of cute, fuzzy animals. We just don't have any definitive proof one way or another.
When this game is over, I so badly want a purely objective history and timeline of Thedas with descriptions of people and events that do NOT occur from an in game perspective. I won't get it ... but I want it! lol

My first post in the legendary section of the Blankerfort!
I suspect that Solas tried to deceive Corypheus at some point and since he knew that he was immortal he tried to make him a servant of Mythal in order to get back his Orb.Samson said that maybe the Orb whispered some elven secrets to Corypheus mostly the location of the temple of Mythal and the well of sorrow, but how can an object whisper?Unless it was Solas who used the Orb to whisper to Corypheus and convince him to jump into the well(that it did not worked because Corypheus was smart enough to realize that it was better to use an host for the well of sorrow rather than himself directly)What do you think?
Why would Solas want Cory to get the Well? He doesn't have Mythal's power yet, doesn't plan on getting it until the Orb's destroyed, and we don't even know if the geas transferred along with it. Moreover, he thinks Mythal is dead at this point (So gaining her power definitely isn't even a thought in his mind.) and it's the entering of the Well chamber that shows him she isn't, which leads me to believe the Well is somehow tied to her life force and wouldn't even exist if she were truly gone - which Solas believes her to be.

I did not interpreted Solas statement toward the well of sorrow as one of surprise,he simply said "Mytha still endure"

Welcome, Gaia300!
Solas definitely let his agents give Corypheus the orb to try to get him to a) open it for Solas as Solas was too weak at the time to do so, and b ) destroy himself in the resulting explosion. Solas did not know Cory was effectively immortal, which is why his plan failed so badly.
While it's unlikely Solas knew Mythal and her magic were still active in the world, until during and after the Temple of Mythal, it is apparent he was willing to utilize the Inquisition to try to stop Corypheus by any means possible and recover the orb. I'm sure if Solas had a telepathic sort of connection to the orb, he would have used that to sabotage Corypheus much more effectively.

Come on! she isn't so evil!
I think she is the one who gave to Thedas many animal species
She could be though! Solas didn't lock her up for making jackalopes. ![]()

...But I do think there will be at least one ending where he's dead and one ending where's redeemed. It'd be a cop out to give us those options and then railroad us into one or the other.
Here's to hoping we don't get a crappy choice of dead or dead. As in, we have to stop him from completing his plans by killing him or he redeems himself by sacrificing his life to stop plans he's already put into motion. My pessimistic side can totally see this happening; I'll be wearing my ME3 ending outrage face if Solas winds up dead no matter what!

True enough but those codexes are written by other people not the person in question. The series of codexes you find in Trespasser are written by the person themselves. So IF (and yes, big if) they were written by Ghilan'ain then we can infer from her own words what she was like. However, despite Ghilan'ain's symbol being on those codexes I am not entirely sold that they were in fact written by her.
Regardless, we can't assume she was this loving, motherly type because she created a lot of cute and fuzzy animals nor can we assume she was a detached mad scientist type who experimented on living creatures. She could have been both. That actually creeps me out more than the pure mad scientist route.
For some reason I picture Ghilan'nain as looking like Delirium of the Endless, don't know why precisely?
Peanut Adaar makes a pun about Solas. Solas feels it.
Spoiler
Punquisitor: Solas is the dread wolf. This is dreadful!
Cassandra: Ugh, no!
Punquisitor: He was a wolf in the fold!
Vivienne: We get it, darling.
Punquistor: He knows all about us, Harel we ever managed to Fen-d him off now?
Dorian: We should send him home with his tail between his legs.
Cassandra: Don't encourage them!
Cole: It feels like we're barking at the moon...
Bull: Ah, it took me ages to think of that one!
Cole: Sorry.
Sera: And... and... he's a butt!
Varric: Not a pun, but won't argue with you, buttercup! He was a bald faced liar!
Sera: Oh, that one was brilliant!

Don't ask. But damn he is gorgeous! (He is basically Solas with hair but he also has a hint of Dorian too.)

It's pretty good, much better than I can do. However, it is a little large. Maybe put it under spoiler tags? Also it's not that creepy. Unless you put clown make up on it. Now that would be really creepy.

Thought of the day;
With her knowledge of Eluvians and her desire to recover her people's history even if she goes to dangerous lengths to do so, is anyone else worried that our dear, sweet Merrill might unwittingly (or willingly) joining Solas' movement to restore the Elves?
I suppose she'd have second thoughts if she found out he was the Dread Wolf, but she does seem like the sort of person Solas would be looking for in prospective agents to carry out his plans.

I do wonder how Merrill would take the idea that the Dread Wolf is not what she grew up learning about. Would it be more difficult for her to hate a person, rather than the idea of a malevolent being from questionable history? Is she less likely to outright condemn Solas for who or what he is, or was, considering she has been shunned for her belief in spirits and blood magic? Certainly would be interesting to see.
Of course, there is that whole world ending thing, but that's its own issue. ![]()

Good.
Okay, all kidding aside, I'm glad to learn that what we've all suspected has been proven. (We Lavellan fans are an intuitive lot. So much of what we've predicted of Solas turned out to be true.

I think it's very possible. Of all modern elves, Merrill seems to best understand that you can't properly heal a wound without getting your hands bloody. Her people pay lip service to recovering the past, but the second it gets a little hard or dangerous they back up and hope their past will recover itself. Merrill understands that if you want to restore more than just surface-level information, you've got to roll up your sleeves and get a little dirty digging for lost secrets.
I don't think she'd be too perturbed by learning he's the Dread Wolf either. Merrill doesn't seem like she blindly believes the Dalish's stories; she sees the Dalish stories as a means to explain the world and understand their place in it. As she tells Anders, "Your 'Maker' is just a story you humans use to explain the world. We have our own stories. I don't need to borrow yours." She also makes it clear that when she tells Hawke's dog about stories of Fen'Harel that they're just that, stories, not the gospel truth. If she met the real person behind the legends and learned his point of view, I'm sure she'd take him at his word and believe that he is the grain of truth the legends are based on, not a wicked slanderer who dares contradict the Dalish's True Stories. (Not that I think most Dalish firmly believe their stories are 100% true.)
That said, I can't really see her following him. Merrill is way too sweet and compassionate for that. As Solas tells an Elven Inquisitior who tries to join him, essentially, would you destroy the world for all the friends you've made in Inquisition? Merrill is really good friends with Varric and Isabela, and potentially Hawke should s/he live. Even though she wants to exalt the elves, I don't see her wanting to do it at the expense of the other races. I think even she would think that's going too far. (She was willing to make a deal with the spirit when she thought only she would be the one to pay the price, and from what I've heard she mainly only uses her own blood to fuel blood magic spells; I don't see her thinking it's okay to sacrifice thousands, if not millions of humans, dwarves, and Qunari just to exalt the elves.)

I had no idea Merrill was that perfect. Maybe we should erect a monument in her honor.
Nah. Her naivete was cute at first but got old fast. I like the character but I liked her more when she wasn't acting like an idiot. I'm not even talking about making deals with demons to recover her people's past. But the whole "la la la I'm wandering around a strange city filled with humans and many of them are templars and I'm a mage and oh look a squirrel!" kind of characterization. After the first year of living in Kirkwall that should have stopped but it didn't really.

I can't believe I missed that! And I took him with me last time! That sly egg still manages to surprise me. :')
Edit: And when Professor Kenric said: "This isn't him, though.", in my head I totally went like: "But this is!" *jabs a finger at Solas*
