LadyMacTir, I hear you.
From the get-go I was interested in either Blackwall or Solas, but I have only played humans in DAO (I did try the Dalish Elf and the City Elf origin but couldn't get much past the origin story) and DA2, so my first (unfinished) playthrough of DAI was with a human dual-wielding rogue who romanced Blackwall. I never finished that game due to computer problems, and I found Blackwall's romance kind of bland, so when I started up a new game from scratch I decided to try an elf so I could romance Solas. I'm glad I did. ^-^
As the party members were being revealed, I think what drew me most to Blackwall and Solas was that they appeared to be a bit older. And I really liked Solas' being a nerd, according to his pre-release character profile (which, by the way, can be a fun read, knowing what we know about him now). I remember being disappointed that he would only be a romance option for elves, but now that the game is out and we've all played, I understand completely why he wouldn't be romantically interested in the other races.
I love having these older characters in games, since I am an older gamer myself. Blackwall and Solas both appear to be in their 40s or so; Leliana and Cullen are probably at least in their 30s, and we actually have a birthdate for Cassandra, which places her at about 37 or 38 years old in 9:41 Dragon. Most of the RPGs I've played aside from BioWare ones are Final Fantasy, whose characters usually seem to be in their 20s or so, with maybe a token teen and a token adult in their 30s or 40s as party members. I guess Geralt might be in his 30s or 40s, but I never could finish The Witcher, and as a result, I didn't even try 2 or 3!
