I’ve been thinking about that post I wrote about redeeming Solas in DA4 some more and I thought I’d add some of the events I think should count. Just speculating because it’s fun.
To be clear this would be separate from gaining Solas’ approval; these are events that would set the scene, so Solas can see that there are other ways, while his approval would be what makes it possible for the Inquisitor to have Solas listen to their argument, and have Solas willing to take another option.*
(If you like to reblog this and add some other events you think should count, please feel free.)
The events I think should count:
(I’ll add explanation if I think it isn’t obvious why I put it in.)
Smaller Events
1. Letting Cole stay - possibly befriending him - but I think just letting him stay and seeing he doesn’t become a demon should be enough.
Because it shows there could be a safe place for spirits in this world.
2. Stopping Solas from killing the mages during his personal quest.
I just see it as similar to softening Leliana in DA:I. Solas is willing to kill in The Masked Empire, but by befriending him in DA:I you can stop him this time.
3. Choosing the ‘change his mind’ option at the end of Trespasser.**
4. Softened Leliana is made Divine.
Because she reforms the world in a way I think Solas would approve of. First off she let’s the mages govern themselves, and considering Solas’ approval changes when dealing with the mages it seems he’d approve. Secondly, she also redirects the Chantry to charity and considering Solas’ always seems to approve if you help people, I’d say he’d approve of this as well. Also, she deals with dissent with reasoning, clearly something he’d approve of - it is one of the things he praises a high-approval Inquisitor for.
5. Saving the Chargers.
(Showing him that not all actions are acceptable, even if done for ‘the greater good.’)
Bigger Events
1. Trying to save the Spirit of Wisdom.
I say try, because I think it’s the willingness to help a spirit, consider a demon as something you can help rather than have to kill, that would count not whether you’re successful.
2. Not killing the ancient elves at the Temple of Mythal.
3. Completing Cole’s personal quest regardless of the outcome.
Shows a willingness to help for spirits, and the possibility of friendship between spirits and the people of this world.
Obviously I’d also put events in DA4 that would count, but we can only speculate about DA:I events for now.
* I know some of you might think ‘but these things are tied to his approval,’ so in gaining his approval you will always pass these checkpoints, so why keep them separate. The thing is, you can gain Solas’ friendship without doing most (if not all) of these things. He is pretty much the easiest person to gain approval with, unless you’re the least curious person in Thedas. So you could be friends with him, without passing these checkpoints, for these events.
** Yes, I realise it’s an DLC so not everyone will have played it when starting DA4, but it is a rather huge decision to leave out of this, and it wouldn’t be the first time a DLC would turn out to be pretty important.
