All right... I'm going to ask this here since I can possibly get answers without everyone wanting to poleaxe me for asking it. I'm truly curious and want to try and understand something.

We were told everyone would have options, but they might not be fairly distributed, which is fine. Everyone has representation, which I am glad for and happy that BioWare provides. Many people are all over Dorian, Iron Bull, Sera, and so on and have stated they will be romancing them. Even with that, there is another option available, so there is choice.

Why is it then that people are upset that there are not strictly equal numbers in regards to the sexualities? If you have a choice, and already know which character you are romancing, what is upsetting about not having a third choice? Is it just that it doesn't exist at all? Is this really seen as a slight against a particular sexuality, even if people are otherwise happy with the options they have available? I'm happy enough to get to romance all the characters I want to, even if it means playing a straight male and a lesbian female as well as a female elf.

I really hope that made sense. I may not be asking the question I mean to ask in the right way. I just hope someone in this thread can offer insight without it turning into a meltdown.

With no opinion on the matter and just from glancing into the romance thread, feeling slighted/under represented seems to be a main concern. I'll leave it at that, romance debates and sexuality get passionate. I'm going to hide out in here.

I think its just disappointment and when disappointed at missing out on what you wanted, to see that others have been given more is going to sting a bit.  I absolutely hated ME3, couldn't have been more disappointed, the unfair distribution of the romances just added more fuel to the fire...  I do wonder if the complaints about the options for straight female shepards might have had some small impact on how many are in DAI.  But its probably not the case.

Yeah it's down. I think it's for the best too!

And this definitely confirms my suspicions that Solas was added later. I had a feeling he had to have been, otherwise having him gated against humans wouldn't have worked.

The Cullen gate doesn't surprise me either. My only surprise there was that he wasn't one of the original core romances. I would have seriously thought he would be.

I think it might be a bit well (don't hate me) complicated. For some it goes back to the notion of fairness, everyone has equal options which Bioware has said upfront that they wanted to make sure that everyone had choices which is different. The reality has now caught up. That combined with the representation or lack of in past games, not only from Bioware but as a entire genre. It would make sense to me, that because Bioware is responding and providing options for GLBT and representation at all, that the expectation for fairness becomes higher and thus the disappointment is greater because no one expects Blizzard or Ubisoft to provide it. Bioware has also showed a willingness to listen and hopefully improve but change may not be fast enough.

In the end, they are going to tell the stories that they feel fit the characters and the world. As a amateur writer, I often see the response that they could just change a character's orientation and I can tell you it isn't always that easy. My characters have their own voice and in a way a life of their own that often surprises me.

I think another aspect is not being happy with the choices provide. In DA 2, technically I had four choices but only romanced Fenris because that is who appealed to me. I could never complete an Anders romance. Thus I only have one or two completed games. In ME I had two but only ever romanced Kaidan. So that may be part of is as well though to be fair, until we play the game for ourselves, we can't really say who we will like or not like.

Anyway, I'm sure others have responded more eloquently then I have but this is just what I think right now. :)

I...feel really conflicted. I'm happy for myself because the options I wanted most (Solas/Cullen and IB to a lesser extent) are available, but on the other hand, I HATE seeing others so down and definitely understand why they are :( Makes it hard to celebrate, you know? I feel really guilty

This surprised me more than Blackwall to be honest. Considering Blackwall was the main straight female option from the get go. Cullenites and Solassians will worship the delay forever more.

WOW WOW WOW!
Solas could have not been a LI? WOW! I'm glad for the year extension, I'm assuming that allowed him to be so.

Spoiler

BUT WOW! What news! Such excitement.

(I also put the spoiler because I realize some people might not have seen all the LI reveals, so yeah!)

So...my assumption is that if they didn't specifically mention a race then that means they can romance any race?

The likelihood of my fem qunari being sassy and single is becoming stronger..which is fine. I wanted to try a nomance, anyhow.

I'm happy for all the people who got what they wanted and sad for those who didn't.

BUT WE GOT SOLAS, THOUGH! Thank you Bioware for giving us our sleepyhead!

Pretty sure the DA fandom caused Tumblr to crash, tbh. Not even gonna bother going into the tag.

On a more positive note, so so truly grateful that Solas was able to be added as a romance. Hope there's no noticeable difference between his romance and Iron Bull/the others due to perhaps not enough time, but I trust that there won't be.

Oh I forgot to say...

To Extra Development Time,

I am so sorry I ever treated badly. I'm sorry I was annoyed and grumpy about your existance. You are a glorious thing, a wonderful and glorious thing. I shall sing your praises as I do all I possibly can to get Solas to sweep my elf off her feet <3

Many players also have no interest in romancing anyone, and we’ve designed each follower to have a rewarding story arc for players who choose to engage with them, romantically or not.

This news, plus the idea that the Solas romance was added later, makes me more hopeful. I'm super interested in his character/friendship arc (more so than I ever was in the romance. I think I got interested in the romance idea just from hanging out in here, haha :P). I will probably have a later playthrough with a lady elf someday, but for now I'm content. I don't feel the need to pursue one of the romance options to enjoy the game. In fact, I've decided that by skipping it my first playthrough, I can focus on the rest of the story, take my time to consider whether I'm really interested in any of the romances at all (because I don't really know, to be honest, I tend to prefer the friendships), and then if I do, I'll have something to perhaps look forward to for my second playthrough(and beyond).

I have to admit, and I'm sorry if this upsets anyone, but I'm kinda really happy Viv isn't an option. That's not to say ambitious women can't fall in love or be interested in romance, but I like the idea that her character arc is strongly focused elsewhere, and her story won't get... distracted...? by romantic plot tumor. Again, sorry if anyone disagrees.

I'm just happy everything has been announced, and people can grieve or celebrate and plan before the game releases.

I'm honestly not surprised about Cullen being gated to humans and elves (I had a feeling that would be the case way back when racegating was hinted).  But I am surprised he wasn't one of the Core Six.

Solas, being elf only, really doesn't surprise me that he was added later, though.

This just goes to show how much good that extra development time can do.

DA:I was going to be humans only, but with more time they made all four races playable. (and we were all ecstatic to see that as well)

Take note publishers, give devs more time, and don't rush them for a quick buck.

I would have thought that too! He's the only clean-shaven/stubbly traditionally pretty guy.

I get what your saying. I just wanted her to be romancable because i wanted to romance a strong female character.

It's good everything has been announced and we can move on.

Ok, I might be dumb for asking this but....

The Voice Acting--Was it mostly recorded before the push back of the date?

If so, that means that they had to call Greg and Gareth back into the studio for the voice work on the romance arc..right? If so, this magical tweet takes on a deeper meaning

Ella. @EllaDelSol Jul 29

@Pancheers dear david lioyd. If you're allowed to, can you please tell us wether Solas will be a love interest or not? Thank you

I know the devs say they write the characters first and then decide where and how romances would fit best, but they really pushed that with Solas.  So excited because I think this means he'll have a FANTASTIC character/friendship arc and a very neat, specific and appropriate romance.  My excitement for Solas as a whole is through the roof right now!

Edit: Still can't wait to meet Vivi.  Aside from Solas I've been looking forward to interacting with her the most :)

I think the romance stuff was recorded much earlier this year, long before the interview.

I just realized that a female elf can have multiple parties comprised solely of people lusting after her.

Edit: And two of three advisors wanting her as well.
