Damn it all.

This will probably be the end of the road for me in the DA fandom and hanging out with all the Solas stuff. I used to follow fan sites, but over the years they would all be overcome by in-fighting and the forum owners/mods getting bored with it and moving on. Which is fair and entirely their choice, but I just don't have the mental energy to deal with that. These forums were the official ones, they were always going to be here, no one had the big say on what happened but the company, etc. etc. so it was just fine to hang out. Except, well, not now.

So it's been a fun few years that honestly helped me through a damn rough time IRL, and the respect and admiration I have for the diverse people on this thread (and elsewhere on the forum) and their insight on the game, the story, and of Solas has never waned. You're all awesome, so remember that forever, whatever comes. Maybe we'll all find ourselves in the same place if/when DA4 comes out, and people will remember me as the person with the ridiculously hard to pronounce name. :P

It's all just such a shame.

I AM DRAGGING YOU TO THE NEW HOME SPACE BY THE COLLAR SO HELP ME UIREBHIRIL   :P

I'm hopeful: The thread will still be here for a little while, so if someone gets lost or if people want to post little beacons of where they end up, they can still come here.

Yeah, be assured guys that before it moves to read-only the OP will be edited to signpost confused users where to go/where we've gone/other relevant information. We can also make an effort to make sure the posts on the last page of the thread have similar content. (bolded so it sticks out for peoples' attention)

Sad to see this all go. *affectionately pats the blankets of the blanket fort*

who cut up onions in here

I'm not even a Solas fan but damn if I haven't admired the dedication and enthusiasm of this thread. I really hate that they're pulling the rug out from under all of you.

Thanks man

Thankyou Kadan and Tess!

(My husband is a game dev for a much smaller company) and he said it's likely due to toxicity in the forums and the devs being sick of hearing about it. Nothing to do with our thread or the well being of the company itself, but possibly a case of the few bad people ruining it for everyone else who enjoys the forums and follows the rules/is generally pleasant to speak to.

(Speaking in general.) It's really difficult for them to put up with the toxicity of the "hardcore" fans for a long time and the bad comments stick with them way more than the good ones.. It's like someone is always criticizing their work very harshly and they just don't want to hear about it anymore.. :/ Can't say I blame them. I just wish everyone didn't have to suffer for it.

(My husband particularly hates the "this is broken and unplayable!" comments as well as the "NEEEERRFED" comments. AND calling the devs out by name. Even when they're the "face of the company" there is never  one single person responsible for a decision in a game. That's why it's a "dev team!")

But yes, I agree. Tell them you love them and what a great thing they've made. It will possibly help!..? A little?

(Sorry for rambling! I hear about this stuff a lot from him and I'm very sympathetic. ^_^ )

I don't know why people troll devs like that. It is utterly juvenile. If you didn't like the product, walk away, and spend your money elsewhere in the future. Constructive criticism is helpful, but not that kind of purely insulting crap. When I was in high school I took a lot of art classes. We always did critiques of one another's work. I became accustomed to giving a receiving respectful criticism--to tempering negatives with positives and swallowing my pride. We had to give these critiques aloud, in front of our peers, right to the faces of the classmate who's work we were critiquing. I guess a lot of the bad apples on the forum could have benefited from taking Art 1 when they were 14.

I'm sorry your husband and his co-workers have to put up with that kind of abuse. I'm sorry if the BioWare devs have suffered from hurt feelings at the hands of our fellows here as well.

In this thread we often gush about the excellent work all the devs did on Solas. We often mention them by name. I hope that positive feedback got around to them at some point.

Happy birthday Auirel :(

Nimlowyn yeah we currently have two main possibilities for relocating the Blanketfort, both are lovely spaces, both have lovely admins (been speaking to both) and both are welcoming. It's early days yet though, not decision-time as such.

I don't know what to say except for 'man, this sucks!' :(

I created an account over on RDF. Same username and stuffs. I'm trying to see if I can save these pages somehow. I know they can be saved as files in firefox but it's gonna take awhile to get all 6k + pages. I tried some program but it didn't work that well. It would take too much hd space apparently. But I'm going to see what I can do... if I can do anything.

I hope that they change their mind in getting rid of the forums.

Thankyou for your efforts Alyka, if you manage to get it to work let me know, and if you need any help or there's anything I can do, let us know. :) I've been looking for a tech solution also.

This is a bit unclear: do the people who join Elfroot Club also need to be artists or writers?
I mean, I can draw amazing stick figures.

Update

I've been looking at the Wayback Machine - does anyone know much about it? I experimentally punched in Page One of the thread, is that link working for anyone, and if so how does it look? It's just one page right? Do you have to do that for each page individually?

Other news:

- I'm caught up here. I've reached out to a couple of techsavvy people that I know or am aware of re: the archiving problem. I'll let you know if anything comes of it.

- I'm getting an error bad gateway at RDF just now, is this happening for anyone else? possibly due to volume of new traffic / refugee influx.

- been speaking to admins of both Elfroot Club and RDF

Things you can do at the moment:

- keep up-to-date with Solasthread discussions re: our forward plans

- ideas and suggestions welcome

- keep an eye on the wider BSN community - where they're going, any community-driven efforts to make a new forum, tech solutions being shared, etc

- post in the announcement thread about the forum closure with your opinions on the matter. follow the steps here too if you can. can't guarantee it will make a difference, but it's worth a shot

- sign up to Elfroot Club and RDF, check them both out, see what you think of them, if you have a preference for one or the other express it in the thread

Things you can be assured of:

- can't speak for the BSN as a whole but the Blanketfort will definitely be started up again in a new location

- OP will be saved and put back up (updated!) in our new home, all links/coding edited accordingly

- the OP links to some of the thread's pages in places as they contain answers/awesome discussion etc, those snippets I'll be saving manually in order to keep them

- before the forum goes to read-only I'll edit the OP clearly signposting where we've moved to, how to contact/join us, etc

- I'm not going anywhere and will keep you all updated.

No! Elfroot Club admins discussed it and though the original purpose of the forum is for art and stuff, it's a flexible platform and software, and all Blanketfort users would be welcome regardless of whether you're an artist or writer or not. The Admins kindly contacted me offering to create a separate category there for the Blanketfort so we could create Blanketfort topics and stuff at will. :)

I just tried it. It works, Pop. :D

EDIT: Wayback states;

"Can I add pages to the Wayback Machine?

On https://archive.org/web you can use the "Save Page Now" feature to save a specific page one time. This does not currently add the URL to any future crawls nor does it save more than that one page. It does not save multiple pages, directories or entire sites."

So only one page at a time then.

You could reach to the admins here and see whether they'd be capable of offering you an archive of the topic. Although I highly doubt it since the databases tend to be very information sensitive.

I could access it yesterday but can't access it today even though I signed up yesterday, it leads me to an error gateway, I was wondering if it could be due to the increased volume of traffic they've been experiencing or something similar. I don't think you're banned, it's not just you that can't access it :)

just signed up to biowaresocialnetwork.boards to check it out. I like that it looks similar.

I am devastated.

First, hi. I had my baby boys and if I was smarter on my phone I'd post a pic but I forget how. They are 8 weeks old now and I love them so much I could burst.

But I check twitter for the first time today and see the news. So I had to rush to see what you all were planning on doing? Moving somewhere?

Working perfectly, looking alright

Just logged in sucessfully, if there was an issue it seems to be gone now

Interesting option as well but I've read on the 3rd party forum thread that there is a possibility for such forum not to be a safe long term plan but I don't know much about this

I'll await developments  on where the Blanketfort ends up, so thank you for saying you'll keep us informed.

On a more cheerful note, I was reading the section on Ferelden in the Core Rulebook and was struck by the following entry about the Alamarri tribes:

"Most sacred of all creatures was the wolf, which they believe was created by the gods to be a guide and protector of mankind".

I wondered if this was one of those instances of some sort of cross over of legends between races.   Essentially the rise a mankind only came about because of the creation of the Veil that led to the imprisonment of the elven mage lords.   There seems strong evidence that the location of this act was Skyhold, which is in the Frostbacks that lie alongside the home of the Alamarri.   It is also not clear but it would seem that humans arrived in Thedas before the raising of the Veil but may well have been hunted by Andruil and her followers.   So if the early humans learned that it was the Dread Wolf who had saved them by his actions, that could have led to their reverence for the wolf.   It may be just a coincidence but it would be an interesting irony if that was the case; that the elves remember him as the enemy but humans as the saviour that he intended himself to be.

Just one of those idle thoughts - trying to keep my mind off the demise of the boards.

I've had to do the same thing in art classes, so I share this view too. They want to hear constructive criticism to improve things. They can't do anything about "I don't like this!" they need a reason and possible suggestions for fixing things.

I feel like trolling in general has lost it's charm and now it's just obnoxious. Like an old joke that's run it's course. I feel that way about a lot of the internet lately. :/

Despite all this, my husband loves his job. He's so happy to be able to work on games.

Their fanbase doesn't seem like it's the worst. It's a free to play game though so there is naturally a lot of complaining when things get changed at all.

(It's not constant suffering as it is with being in the Solas fandom. :P )

And if they're going through the forums at all, they are sure to see the good with the bad. It's just harder to forget about the negative things. Mentioning people by name is probably fine if they're getting praise. I can't stand seeing "This is ___'s fault."  Except for things like, "Weeeeeeeeekes!" because he loves fan tears. (And it's a silly and harmless joke.)

On a way smaller scale, when I was 14 I was running a webcomic blog and it gained a fair amount of popularity considering what it was, but very quickly it also gained the same kind of trolls and it was just way too much too handle, even if they were like 5 or 6 people out of 100 daily visitors

I just can't start to feel enough for the creators who have to *keep working* while this is happening all the time over the whole internet

Take care guys!

I am a long time pre game release lurker, I do not think I have ever posted here (since character threads are generally more romance focused then I like), but you had a couple of interesting discussions here, and I prefer reading to posting.

So goodbye, you never knew me, but I sort of know a couple of you. Hope you will be able to keep the thread community together.
