Solas being a confirmed romance option
guys just think how far we have come
from the glorious dawn of our era, the bronze age days of Bald Elfy McSmuggs, when we has nothing but a piece of concept art and a smirk. We didn't even have a character blurb from that old leaked survey like Sera, Iron Bull, Cole etc. just that single smirk. and now he is a confirmed romance option, voiced by GDL 
when you think of it in that perspective the wait until release doesn't seem long at all!

I started to really like him after I read his profile.
Another thing that got me though..his hands 
I know it might sound strange but the way his hands look in all shots we've seen--so soft and graceful in their pose. Lovely little tools of destruction.

I almost made a comment before about the possibility of getting into the game and realizing he was a huge douchecanoe but resisted. Mostly because I really like the word douchecanoe but also because it would be just my luck to spend months excited about this character only to find him intolerable in game.

I'm excited about him anyway, same as the other characters. They really seem like the most diverse and interesting cast we've seen in awhile. It's likely my character won't get on with all of them, but that's fine. I can't wait to see what happens regardless.

Months ago when I came here in the DA:I Forums I wasn't expecting anything great hadn't really been to the Bioware forums for a long time cause I was so mad at bioware for what they did to my Thane,anyways I came upon this picture:

). I was lightly following DAI and just pushed BioWare related stuff out of my mind for a while after hearing about the year delay. Then Dragon Age popped back into my head during the spring and I checked back in again.
One of the first things I saw was that leaked magazine picture of Solas and didn't think much of it. Then people started ragging on him and I have a habit of always rooting for the underdog, so I decided that I was going to get myself interested in this character to counter all the unpleasantness.
It worked. He's by far my favorite character of this bunch from what we know about him!

Anyway. First time I saw Solas (thought to be Dorian at the time) I was like: "ohhhh you're different! me likey." I rooted for him quietly, popped in here now and then. I had a good feeling about him, but I also had a good feeling about Joker...so...I was hoping for the best and preparing for the worst.

I am TOTALLY down for a villain romance, so wanting to take over the world wouldn't bother me in the slightest He would be the first Bioware companion I've ever disliked though, so I doubt it will happen

I was joking. The worst that happens is he doesn't get along with the initially planned character and I need to work out one who would get along with him.
My reasons are pretty much the same as lyrabelacqua's. I don't think I'd entirely dislike him but it would certainly make me unhappy.
It isn't easy to make me dislike a character and my opinion can change depending on what sort of character I'm roleplaying at the time.

I wouldn't like Solas if he ended up being really shallow and rigid in his beliefs. If he ends up being a villain though I am totally down to be his bride and rule the Fade with him. Villain or non villain Solas makes me happy.

I actually started out more interested in Cullen. I never got over that cute little bit from the mage origin. Yes...I'm one of those people. 
Anyway, I used to lurk on the BSN off and on, but things got so toxic after DA2 that I bailed altogether. The slow trickle of Inquisition info (back before we even knew it was called Inquisition) pulled me back in, and though I was excited to see Cullen in the leaked survey and what looked like Cullen in the War Room art, I was...intrigued...by Baldy McSmuggins. It was the smirk, and the way he looked like he was hanging back, watching and knowing things. To be honest, though, when that first screenshot came out I was like, "I dunno...this is the smirky elf? The bald dude in long johns with no facial expression?" BUT THEN:

^This, pretty much. One of my very first posts was to defend Solas as probably being one of the most interesting characters in the game. And lo and behold, he actually was interesting. And other really cool people thought so too! And the mystery and speculation and fun and increasingly attractive screenshots kept me on the Solas train, and I didn't have to fangirl by myself anymore and now HERE WE ARE! I can't imagine romancing anyone else on my first playthrough.
Oh, and that tweet from Patrick about not liking being mean to him makes me happy. If he were really a douchecanoe of a character (that's one of my favorite words too, leviathanmirror!) he'd be having a lot more fun being a jerk (The Assquisitor!) to him.
I think I fell for Solas when everyone was making fun of his clothing on tumblr. I'm the anti-fashion, so I find his long-underwear and fleece jacket look incredibly endearing.

Also, his character concept is fascinating. I won't even care if he's evil- as long as he doesn't think he's gonna use Lavellan as a brood mare, I feel like I'm going to love the crap out of him, no matter what.

Well if he looked like Nicolas Cage before, and I never thought he did, he certainly doesn't look like him at all now after they changed his face.
Story time at first due to not having read Asunder I was really interested in Cole. But Heck his character description just gave me a reason to like him more. He just looked different from the other mages and I'm generally a fan of underdogs and black sheep. Eager to hear his perspective and romance him when the time comes.
I fell for him from the moment that first screenshot of him was revealed. Just because he's an elf and I have my "elven tradition" as I call it. (I've romanced Zevran and Fenris)

And then months and months of waiting for info on him and then we got details on his personality and I completely and all too quickly fell head over heels for him.
Fast forward to the present where that's x10 worse and all I do is talk about him all day. Here I am!
Why do I get super excited whenever I see the tweet saying that Solas often speaks in a rhythm? My nerd shows during these moments...not that I'm complaining, but I start to grin stupidly and my coworkers give me the side-eye. XD
I think for me, it's that I tend to gravitate towards intellectual characters, which Solas appears to be, and that's what first made me want to learn more about him.
I'm also very interested in the concept of the knight errant - the idea that someone has their own morality which may or may not agree with the "law," and they go around on adventures helping people. Think Robin Hood, or Yojimbo, or Wuxia films, or even a lot of comic book superheroes (it's one of my favorite literary tropes, I use it all the time). In the interview about Solas, we learned about his "more complicated than that" ideas on right and wrong, and so that made me think of the knight errant concept.
And then of course I found out that he has the same writer as Mordin, my favorite Mass Effect character!
Everything I've learned since then only strengthens my interest in him. Mr. Weekes keeps hinting at all these things that fall right into my favorite nerd-cred zones. For example, I never thought my Shakespeare knowledge would help me speculate on a video game character!
Really looking forward to the game! All the characters sound so interesting, and Skyhold looks amazing, and hours upon hours of story and exploration... I just hope I get the funds together to build my new PC, or else my copy of the game is going to be mocking me for a little while!
I thought Solas was "Dorian" at first too because other people said that. I assumed he would be a love interest from the get-go because he's an elf. It's tradition. I had to get used to his appearance because me likey the luscious locks but his clothing never bothered me and he always had nice legs. It was the personality reveal that actually got me excited for him though. Then hearing the voice clips and how his voice was so deep and mellow... I started swooning.
