One of the first things I saw was that leaked magazine picture of Solas and didn't think much of it.  Then people started ragging on him and I have a habit of always rooting for the underdog, so I decided that I was going to get myself interested in this character to counter all the unpleasantness.

 

It worked. He's by far my favorite character of this bunch from what we know about him!

 

Yeah my first post on here or on the other Solas thread was me defending him and I know a few of you were too...it sure didn't take long for the haters to leave that thread.

I'm excited about him anyway, same as the other characters. They really seem like the most diverse and interesting cast we've seen in awhile. It's likely my character won't get on with all of them, but that's fine. I can't wait to see what happens regardless.

 

Actually, that's a good question. What would make anyone here not like Solas? Not just in a romance context, mind you. In general.

The only things that come to mind are a straight up betrayal or spying on the PC's dreams while they sleep... but neither seems too likely.  I hope.

I was interested in Solas pretty early on because I have a thing about elves.   That shot of him with his arms out about to throw fireballs looks very like a drawing I did of my character in Baldurs Gate.   He was a fighter/mage and had long golden locks but apart from that the similarity was uncanny.    The bald head did take a bit of getting used to but now I wouldn't have him any other way.     The character reveal meant that I knew I was going to love him as a friend if nothing else.    He just sounds fascinating.    But I was really, really hoping and praying he would be a romance, so now I just can't stop smiling.    I love the fact that he is only interested in elf girls.   It makes me/my character feel special knowing that he doesn't go with just anyone.    I'm also really appreciative to the Devs that they took the trouble to include his romance.   It makes up for all those years ago when I wanted to romance Haer'Dalis but couldn't and then discovered that he should have been a romance but was cut due to time constraints.   (I know he wasn't an elf but he looked a bit elven)

 

Zevran was fun and touching in his devotion by the end of DAO, Fenris could be infuriating, had me on tenderhooks right through to the nearly the end of Act 3 whether he would finally get back together with my female mage Hawke and I couldn't help having a little sense of triumph when he did and was begging his beloved mage not to die (while defending mages); however I'm hoping that Solas will truly be the elf romance I've been waiting for all these years.

Hi guys! Okay, I just wanted to know where that video of that one guy speaking in iambic pentameter went. He started by sort of tapping the rhythm on a tabletop before hopping off and diving right into the speech? Can someone find it please?

 

Anyways, when I first saw Solas I was a bit meh about him. I mean, at the time it was his baldness that threw me off. However, I didn't want to give up just yet just because of one little detail about his appearance. So, I ended up searching around and found a link to his bio and from that moment on, I was immediately hooked. He was everything that I want in a guy; intelligent and he has a unique view on the world around him that not many others have. I found myself relating to him in some ways because of this. Then, his VA came out and it made me love him even more.

The actor in the video is Kenneth Branagh. He is one of the most well-known and prolific Shakespearean actors, and is particularly well-known for how natural he makes it sound.

 

He has directed quite a few Shakespeare films as well (I recommend Much Ado about Nothing. It's... well, it's completely ridiculous, but that's how it was written - it's one of the comedies. I mean seriously, Keanu Reeves plays the brother of Denzel Washington... and Michael Keaton as a crazy-talking policeman... And some of the best snarky banter of all time!). 

 

He also directed Thor, and is responsible for Idris Elba as Heimdall, which is one of the most fantastic bits of casting ever! Ok, I think I'm done now...

Hmm... I think I started looking into the new DA release back in... I don't know? Spring? One of the first things I looked up was the companions, as that's one of my favorite things about DA games. The one that caught my eye on the wiki page was the 'elven apostate.' I'm pretty sure this was post survey leak. I don't have any particular interest in elves, but I had just finished playing Leliana's Song and liked Sketch and thought this character might be a bit like him... Really, it never occurred to me to be bothered by the lack of hair.

Anyway I eventually ended up lurking on the forums, and found out Cullen was going to be in the game and a romance (!) and got caught up in that hype, and when I joined BSN made my 'home' in his thread.

I was still curious about Solas, and the 'Fade expert' thing was cool, but there wasn't much info, so I didn't feel like I had much to say about him. It wasn't until I saw people making fun of him and playing hot potato with his orientation (please take him! they said... *ahem*) and found myself defending him that I started posting in the old thread. Like, I felt like I had to because the poor guy was just on the receiving end of all that nastiness. Fast forward to his profile and the new pictures and interview, and I'm like "Cullen who?" Heh... Not really, but, between his intelligence and worldview, and a design I've come to absolutely love, Solas edged out Cullen as the character I'm most excited about.

As far as being someone I might hate - the only DA character I've actually disliked was Sebastian, and his great insurmountable flaw was being dull. I have a feeling Solas will be anything but. Even if he turns out to be a bit evil, as long as it's a compelling sort of evil I'll still enjoy his character.

Just wanted to say that I'm really curious about Solas. I don't think he'll be my first romance (that will probably go to Cullen with Varric now out of the running, but who knows when I actually start playing the game), but I'm super interested in his character. I love the "it's more complicated than that" thing he has going for him. So I'll just have to wait and see when the game is released if I like him "like him" or not lol .

Yup, my cannon Warden is a female Dalish warrior (as pictured in my avatar). 

I think my Warden would be wary of him at first, and would definitely not believe him right away about the days of Arlathan; especially if it doesn't line up with what she has been taught. Being open-minded though, she would hear him out and eventually come to accept what he says as truth if he provides sufficient evidence.

 

Personality-wise? They'd be jammin'.

While I won't REALLY know if I am going to like Solas as a character until I've interacted with him some in-game, I can say that I like everything I've heard about him so far.

 

There really needs to be some kind of "man of my dreams" quip by the Inquisitor.

 

And really?  The man speaks in poetry.  He speaks. In. Poetry.  (I wonder if he ends particularly important statements in rhyming couplets...?)  So when he gets romantic, well... he won't have to read poetry to the Inquisitor, he'll just come up with it out of the blue.  Which is... interesting.
