And I have plans to do just that...as soon as my first Lavellan gets her fill of Solas. I'm sorry.

LOL Before I heard of the back stories, I had originally planned to romance Cullen with a Dalish Mage. :P Then Solas was revealed for the Elven females...

The Inquisition doesn't feel temporary but if it's possible for Lavellen to go home my elf mage would. She'd ask Solas to come with her, promising that he would still be free to wander as he pleased but the choice would be his. She has a duty to the clan and it's where she wants to be.

I thought the problem with Mahariel's parents was that they were from different clans and the elders didn't approve of the match?

Yes they were from different clans but they were both still dalish I don't see anything wrong with their match that's why I wouldn't have my Inquisitor take Solas into her clan because of whatever rules they might have in the dalish...they can stick it where the sun don't shine. :)

Edit: I want to point out that remark at the end there is not to you it's pretty much towards the dalish I'm not a big fan of the dalish I love elves but the dalish just...some of them are nice but some of them are not nice if you know what I mean ,I don't hate them and I don't love them if that makes any sense. Lol

I have the feeling the Inquisition is not something you can just walk away from at the end either, but if there is that possibility, my Lavellan would definitely go back home to her clan. Or if her clan is destroyed, she would seek another one. I'm planning her to be fiercely loyal to the People, she wouldn't want to spend a day longer than absolutely necessary away from her culture.

It would make for all sorts of interesting complications for her romance with Solas, though. How does he even feel about the Dalish? Would he want to leave his life behind and join a clan? If he did agree to it, would he be interested in learning the old elven magic? Would he take vallaslin to mark himself as a true Dalish, or just chill in the background and take the occasional seth'lin thrown his way every now and then? And if he did take the writing, which deity would he choose? (Dirthamen? Mythal?) Could I bribe him to join with a fluffy halla? How would the clan react to Lavellan coming back with a thin blood anyway? At least it's an elf and not a dirty shem, I suppose. But would they welcome him or give him the cold shoulder? This gives me so many questions.

I think they would welcome him if he wants to be Dalish  ^_^  they accept converts from the ranks of the city elves and treat them the same.

Or if you bring home a Tevinter mage, that might not be an overly popular choice either...

Definitely Bull if you bring him as a lady elf. On top of everything else, the clan will love the offspring potential.

Would a qunari/elf offspring be called a half-qunari or a half-elf? Actually, calling a human/elf offspring half-elf or elf-blooded is kind of assuming that being human is the norm, to elves they would be human-blooded/half-humans...

So I’m sure this has already been brought up earlier in the thread but I’m pretty new to the BSN so I haven’t gone that far back, but I replayed the Witch Hunt DLC from Dragon Age Origins recently and found a lot of interesting stuff about the ancient elves which made me even more curious about Solas since I think its possible he will be related to/have something to do with them in Inquisition. In the DLC  the human circle mage Finn says the ancient elves would hide important elven artifacts with magic so that those who were considered “unworthy” (like the Tevinters) or something like that could not find them and take them. So in the DLC when exploring the Cadash thaig with the Warden and the Dalish warrior Ariane he uses Ariane’s blood to locate the Lights of Arlathan, because only pure Dalish blood would work in order to find these ancient elven artifacts. I found it interesting since we now know Solas will somehow be able to sense hidden elven artifacts, which makes me wonder, how and why?

He may be related to/descended from the ancient elves for him to somehow be able to sense the artifacts nearby, or perhaps he is of Dalish blood? I think something is definetly going on with Solas and ancient elven magic.

Another cool thing in the DLC was Ariane mentioning the magic of the ancient elves being lost to them (the Dalish). Perhaps with Solas’ fade powers and ability to look into the past through memories/dreams (however subjective and possibly inaccurate that power may be) he may be interested in reclaiming some of the lost magic/artifacts/history of the ancient elves.

Finally the only other very, very vaguely related Solas thing I noted about the DLC was the statues depicted on the eluvian were both bald male (?) figures wearing robes and carrying swords.(they looked like they had human ears, but it was hard to tell) They reminded both of Solas and my own arcane warrior mage, who wears robes but carries the sword Spellweaver. I wonder if shaved heads have some significance in (ancient?) elven culture? Some of Merrill’s concept art had her with a partially shaved head if I recall correctly and some Solas concept art had him with the front of his head shaved I believe. Also the elven hero Shartan was bald/had a shaved head. Or I could probably totally be over thinking things, which I probably am, haha.

I definitely recommend playing Witch Hunt if you haven’t. I think its especially great to play with a Dalish or Circle mage character, as you return to the Circle and the ruins of the where Tamlen and Mahariel found the eluvian. And you get a little more insight into elven culture which is great, especially since I think that may become significant (I’m hoping) at some point during inquisition.

Anyway I’m going to bed, sorry for my essay!!! I’m sure someone better versed than me in the lore will come along and school me, haha! I’m just have fun speculating.

Elf-blooded Qunari, I guess, but it would still be a Qunari, even to elves.  There's no such thing as a real half-elf since elves can only produce elves with other elves.  If they reproduce with other races, the child is always the same race as the non-elven parent.  There's some magic reason for why elves have that reproductive quirk.

The blood for the Lights of Arlathan magic needed to be elven, not necessarily Dalish.  An elven Warden of any background can ask why their blood won't work, and Finn will mention that the Taint has altered the Warden's blood so it can't be used.

Learning more about the ancient elves alongside Solas is something I'm very much looking forward to though.

The Elder Scrolls have the same geneteicsLOL quirk. It doesn't matter what race the father is the child will always take after the mother.

I can understand about the parents, her elders maybe at her parents urging didn't want to lose her to another clan. To me it's more wanting your kid to find work and raise a family in their home town than the dalish being aholes.

I wont go so far to say I like the dalish but I find them interesting and I have some sympathy towards them. Their more elf than thou attitude I think comes from living out in the wilderness at the mercy of nature, you have to tell yourself something big to make it seem worthwhile. Living isolated from other people would make anyone suspicious of newcomers, throw in the history slavery and homeland razing and I'm not overly bothered about the unwelcoming attitude.

Marrill and Marethari are a cautionary tale about being too invested in bring back lost lore however.

Yeah... I was trying to go and see if there was a genetic reason for why elven/human offspring turn human, but apparently the reason is magic. One theory I heard is that it might be a Tevinter curse.

The elven inheritage is not even a recessive gene, which could have been interesting, because then an elvenblooded human and an elf could have gotten an elven child. Or even two humans with elven heritage (which could have been awkward if they hadn't been aware of said heritage...)

But... ahem. Back on topic.

I went and took a peek at the concept art of Solas with a partly shaved head (I guess this is the one you meant, Cariblue? Matt Rhodes art <3) and that's certainly... something.

Spoiler

I'm so glad they shaved it all. Looks much better in my opinion. And as for any potential meaning behind it... maybe? I'm not super lore savvy.

I love how everybody are in different stages of agitation... except Solas. He's just standing a bit in the background. Smirking.

Oh gosh that sounds painful. I'm not even sure how I'm going to last 'til the 18th! I mean, lately I've been grousing and grumbling and glaring at October vindictively every morning... I'm likely going to lose it on the 14th when pre-load pops. I'm sure I'll do it immediately and then spend the next four days going absolutely bats*** crazy, hahah. You brave souls who went for physical copies possess far more strength than I ever could.  <3

I have to shell out for a new graphics card, the deluxe edition might be beyond me come November.

Maybe we get a halla in the base game.

Well, the Red Hart was revealed not to be a halla by Mike Laidlaw on twitter, so I'm hoping there's a halla mount in the vanilla game (for my Dalish protagonist).

I get what your saying and I do have sympathy for them but they need to stop with the attitude towards the humans of today they aren't the ones that destroyed Arlathan and took their lands away from them. Anyways this was just about why I wouldn't let my dalish who is going to love all races ( I hope we can have our elves be that way I don't want them to be grumpy and moan "I hate the Shemlen!" all the time lol  ) and will go with Solas wherever he wants at the end. The dalish I just don't like their rules and some of their attitudes and I feel as if they will give my Dalish elf and Solas problems even though he is an elf too and I'm sticking to it of them going elsewhere to have freedom and live happily ever after.  :)

My Lavellan will probably take a nice long vacation to Antiva or Rivain with Solas if possible after the Inquisition has consolidated enough power and the breach has been closed. She'll definitely visit her clan often but I have a feeling dalish clans won't be the same depending on what choices we pursue concerning Orlais and the Dales and possibly giving the dalish a homeland. So they may be quite welcome to her if she introduces them to Solas because they'll have bigger fish to fry.

I get what your saying and I do have sympathy for them but they need to stop with the attitude towards the humans of today they aren't the ones that destroyed Arlathan and took their lands away from them.

No, but it does go both ways. Plenty of humans still enslave the elves or treat them as little better than refuse. The Dalish get hunted and run off if they stay too long in one place. That may be due to the Dalish causing problems to humans in the area, or it could just be humans see it as fun sport or a necessity to "protect" themselves and maintain superiority. So while the humans who destroyed everything for the elves are as long dead as the elves that had everything destroyed, there are still issues that cause tension between the races. Humans aren't blameless there. I'm not surprised the Dalish are wary and hostile depending on the situation.

I don't intend to play an "I hate all humans!" elf either, but you damn well bet she's going to take her time in trusting others and weighing whether they're worthy of that level of respect. :P
