From the Twitter thread. Hiya, Solas!

Oh how I wish I could see the demo for this game in IMAX. I'm so jealous of everyone that gets to be there! They get to see Solas up close and awesome!  ;)

I am seriously not able to handle how beautiful this game is.

Also, I seriously want to walk up behind Solas and rub his head. This is bad.

Are those wisps in the background? Is this maybe one of the areas where the veil is thin?

Also, is it bad that the first thing I focused on was the barrels and crate and wondered if there was some items in there? I'm a loot ******, I admit it.

Names!

I've mentioned before that I'm going for a sort of trickster archetype with my Inquisitor (a snarky and enigmatic storyteller, usually leaning towards morally good). I didn't want to headcanon any deeper than that before playing the game, but I did start leaning specifically towards a raven or crow theme (because I was drawing).

For a name, I would like to use Dalish for raven or crow, but if I'm not able to find that out, I might use Huginn or Muninn after Odin's ravens Thought and Memory (I would pick one and use the other for when I play a female elf, probably).

Another option would be Harellen, which actually means "trickster" in elvish, but I'm not sure if I want to use it because it seems like it would have a negative connotation (I mean really, being named after Fen'Harel doesn't seem like a good idea). The Dalish version of the trickster archetype reminds me of Loki, which seems more villain than anything. Which is opposed to what I'm going for which is more like Anansi, or like Native American trickster gods like Coyote or Raven.

Wow, that makes it sound like I'm thinking too hard about a name... (honest, this is only five minutes worth of ADHD-powered brain storm).

*shuffles away...*

highly encourage connections to Native American folklore!  Mica (Coyote) is always a good choice.  Ah, I never get to talk about this with anyone.  Have you heard about Iktomi?  He was my favorite - I always used to bug my lala for stories about Iktomi, haha.  The Eluvian network is sort of reminiscent of a prophecy we have that Iktomi would cover the world with his web, which is why I made the connection between him and Fen'Harel.  Although we don't see Iktomi in the same "evil" light that the Dalish see Fen'Harel.  He's definitely neutral.

Did you mean Harellan?  The Elvish term for trickster - apparently close to "dreadful friend."  Harellen would be "dread child," since len means child.  Da'len, for example, means "little child."  But I really like both for a Dalish PC that takes inspiration from Fen'Harel!  Really great choice.

I, too, put a bunch of time into making names.  No need to be embarrassed!  Generally I mix real-world languages with Elvish to make names that feel unique but have a lore-friendly flavor.  I'm considering Elsinth for my female Lavellan...but I have a sudden urge to use my language for a name now.  You guys on this thread have such great names picked out for your Inquisitors!

Also breaking my thread lurking because I am a huge nerd.  Hello, Solas thread!  You are all beautiful.

Awesome! I actually hadn't heard about Iktomi before (looks like I have things to research now!). I'm really interested in Native American mythology, but I admit I don't know very much about it, and I want to make sure I don't mix all the stories up - there's lots of cultures under that blanket term! Is there a Raven or Crow character you know of? I would love to put one on my list to research (the only Raven I know anything about is in Canadian First Nations stories, and even then, my knowledge is super vague and only picked up recently from visiting Vancouver and looking at art there).

And hey, Harellen was totally a typo, but now it sounds kinda really cool, haha!

Elsinth is really pretty sounding, but I'm glad my thoughts gave you inspiration as well!

Welcome to the thread!

EDIT: I just looked up a little bit about Iktomi... Super interesting! I really like him!

Welcome to the thread!

Iktomi is definitely great - be sure to read about Ksa as well, since I feel that's very crucial to his stories!  It can be difficult to find solid info about the old religions and their stories, since they vary greatly from tribe to tribe, even within a single Nation.  In my own tribe, we have a few trickster entities.  Off the top of my head I can recall Heyokha, Mica, and Iktomi as trickster deities.  There's also Taku Skanskan, who is associated with chaos and is said to be master of the four Night spirits - Fox, Raven, Vulture and Wolf - but he's not as prominent and as far as I know not considered a trickster.  As far as other tribes go, I know that Raven is more prominent in the Pacific northwest.  He's a creator spirit to the Haida, Inuit and Tsimshian.  Aleuts consider him a cultural hero.  You might find more stories about Coyote than Raven or Crow, in my experience.  This is a really great website to research Native mythology by tribe, as it has a huge collection of legends and briefly describes the important deities to each.  If you'd like I could also ask around for stories about Crow or Raven when I next visit my family on the reservation, though that won't be for a few weeks.

And thank you for the warm welcome (plus some grand inspiration)!  This thread has always been so friendly.   <3

While playing Destiny I came across this little excerpt that made me think of Solas:

You try and try and try to explain, but no one ever understands. No one who's not a Warlock. Who hasn't spent a dozen years scouring the ruins for one string of symbols, one clean code, one black talon. Titans just make a hmphing noise, if they've stayed awake. Hunters clean their nails with their knives and look at you like you've grown a third eye.

But when you've spent your life searching through arcana for ancient power, you have the urge to reach out and educate others. Especially if you've had one too many.

Nah, she's not my type at all. We've played dice, cards, war games, you know, the usual stuff. I'd never tried to show off before. I don't know what came over me.

I had a broken vertebrae in my pocket that I'd borrowed from - yes, borrowed, I was going to put it back - what do you think you are, my conscience? It was a fossil, that means mineral replacement, a rock, basically. They can survive a few hours in my pocket. Do shut up.

Ah! Thank you so much! I'm such a research nerd, I can't wait to dive into this!  <3

Honestly, the Raven or Crow thing was more visual aesthetic than anything else (it's all because of the feather pauldrons that seem so prominent among DA mages, haha). Uh, I'll guess I'll just re-post my Inquisitor drawing because that's easier than trying to explain my thought process here...

Spoiler

I'm definitely going to read up on the trickster deities you suggested! I did see a little about Ksa while I was reading about Iktomi. And Iktomi reminds me of Anansi, which is fascinating to me. (I don't know why, but I have very strong memories of Anansi stories at my elementary school. I probably just really liked them!)

Yay! I learned new and interesting things today! My favorite feeling in the world <3

No problem!  I'm always geeking out over new things I've learned, especially when I find old stories I've not yet heard.  So glad I can share my knowledge with someone who's equally enthusiastic!

:o  What lovely art!  I really like your Inquisitor, the aesthetics are great!  I think using symbols from Raven and Crow is a good idea, since they're quite universally understood (and misunderstood in some circles) as tricksters, and invoking them in the aesthetic furthers the direction you're taking with characterization.  It's a really great choice for an Inquisitor's inspiration imo, given their roles in stories as heralds of change.

I've seen a bit on Anansi, he definitely shares traits with Iktomi!  It's amazing how archetypes seem to transcend cultures, isn't it?

Never stop learning!  I bet Solas would feel the same.

All my Wardens (did all Origins, but only finished the game with a human rogue, and nearly finished with an elven mage and Dalish rogue) were called Jeir, bar my only human male mage, whom I called Nemisar.
Both Hawkes (mage, rogue) were called Jeir.
My three planned Inquisitors (human mage, elven rogue, qunari mage/rogue) will be called Jeir.
(My Shepard was also called Jeir. As was my Nerevarine/Champion/Dovahkiin/Lone Wanderer/Courier. Same with my Fateless One, Dragon Knight and Kalach-cha. As was my main WoW Blood Elf hunter and Guild Wars ranger. And also on pretty much every site I've signed up to that allows 4-letter names.)

I'm so original. XD Been using this name for over a decade, after making it up one day when bored in school. Only found out later that it's Manx for 'tear' or 'tears' (as in the wet stuff that comes out of your tear ducts when you cry, rather than the ripping/shredding kind). So, er, if you see a 'Jeir' around (or a 'Jeir Velothril'), good chance it's me.  ^_^

This is like the first time I've seen Solas/Female Elf fanart lol

Check the first page. There's a rather pretty one by Ganumedes. =3

I know people have mentioned it before but have you any theories why the clan of Mahariel's mother disapproved of her relationship with the Keeper of the Sabrae clan?   I know she was meant to be a good hunter, which would be a loss to the clan, but surely they could have arranged a swap?    If city elves feel the need to get fresh blood from outside their alienage, this would be even more important among the Dalish where the numbers in a clan are much smaller than in an alienage.   So you'd think they would approve, particularly if there was a reciprocal swap.     From what I have read on the Wiki, the Dalish regard the Keepers as having the purest blood, presumably because they are mages, so I can't see any objection there.     He had been Keeper for some time, so was his age something to do with it?

It is not even as though they thought they were losing her for years at a time because they clans were apparently in such close proximity they were still able to meet in secret.    So was there some old blood feud between the two clans?    Otherwise I really can't make sense of it.      I can see why a clan might not approve of Solas, since he would appear not to be Dalish, although there is no reason why they couldn't let him join if he wished and he is a mage, but Mahariel's history has me really puzzled.   I know this isn't really about Solas but it is sort of relevant and I know people here are sympathetic and thoughtful about such matters.

Well, now that you mention it, this actually makes me really curious too. I never really thought about it before so.... In my personal opinion, I believe it might be a bit of a clan rivalry; not all Dalish clans would be alike after all and they might have different views on things (i.e. city elves, humans, etc.). This in turn could potentially affect the interactions between the two clans. Or maybe it was the fact that Mahariel's father was the Keeper and for him to dally with someone just didn't seem like a good thing; the Keeper is supposed to put the clan first after all. It just happened to make the situation worse that Mahariel's mother was from a different clan, since she would hold loyalty to them, thus making Mahariel's father loyal to her clan since she is from there while he is supposed to hold his own clan's best interests above all else. So, I guess the true answer is.....

B) It's more complicated than that! ;)

Speaking of names... I have a few i like that I tend to recycle. Malta is a side character in one of my favorite books - Haruki Murakami's 'Wind-Up Bird Chronicle,' and since it reminds me of one of my favorite songs ('Night of the Swallow' by Kate Bush has lyrics referring to the country) I was drawn to it. It was the name I used for my Cousland warden-turned-queen, but as it happens my 'canon' warden has the default name Solona.

Nejsu (pronounced nay-SOO) means 'am not' in Czech - sort of a tongue-in-cheek attempt at being existential, but really I just like the way it sounds, and it was the name of a Dunmer girl i played in Morrowind years ago. I was going to re-use it for my Dalish Inquisitor, but, speaking of crows (which I love, for many reasons - I was going to get a crow tattoo this year but ended up having to spend my money on other things), I was thinking of naming her Vrana, which is crow in Czech. I'll use Margot for my human rogue simply because it's French and noble-sounding and I think it's beautiful.

If I do get around to playing a male character, I'm actually considering naming him Booker after the player character in Bioshock Infinite - I don't even really like the name that much, and it's totally anachronistic, but I just finished the game and it was amazing and he's the first male character i genuinely loved playing as.

When you talk to Master Varathorn, you can find out that your father, the Keeper, spoke up at a clan gathering to encourage the Dalish to have more contact with human cultures. Maybe your mother was from a fanatically isolationist and traditional clan and strongly opposed him? (trying to think of something that makes sense with what we actually know about the Dalish).
