Didn't they say Solas was a hedge mage and hedge mages and circle mages can't learn each other's magics? I think I saw that as a reason that Solas and Viv grate on each other...
That's what they said, yes, but in the demo with Solas he was using primal spells, same as Vivi and Dorian. And if his specialization is Rift Mage (pretty sure they took those out for the demo - I don't think they've shown us any specialization talents at all) then we know he can at least teach it to us. My guess is that while Solas will be considered a hedge mage by our more classically trained companions, he doesn't completely fit.
Technically what defines a hedge mage is their complete lack of training. However we know that Solas has spent time with the Dalish (where he might have learned a few things) and that he is self-taught (so he may have learned things from books and such). It's also possible he learned things in his wanderings through the fade and ruins alike (remember how we learn the blood mage and arcane warrior specs in DAO?). Would be pretty neat if those 'crazy spells' he knew were ancient forgotten magics or tricks he learned from fade spirits.
Personally, I think it would have been cool if Solas had spells completely unique to him - but I understand from a development perspective why that couldn't happen. You'd have to make a bunch of skill trees just for that one character, while making sure they were balanced in a way that would make that companion just as useful and powerful as the other companions without going overboard,
