Finally, I tried to look up a recipe for Scotch Bonnet candy, and it looks like Americans from the north are sol when it comes to finding the ingredients. For any of you who have tried this, what does it taste like? What does it mean for Solas's character?
Actually, back in the original Solas thread, the amazing DAFan (then called EricAnder) made up a batch and shared the results with us. FOR SCIENCE! You can see what happened here...just scroll up a bit to see where he started. Hopefully his taste buds are now fully recovered. ![]()

SpoilerSaw this on tumblr and legit thought it said Lavellan. Almost had a heart attack.
What could have been such a great gaming moment with Tamlen the Ghoul turned into a big WTF gaming moment for me. Was everyone else deaf? Did no one care it was clearly someone the Dalish Warden knew? Were they just callous bastards to stalk off and bicker amongst themselves immediately after the Warden had to knife their friend/lover? Could no one think to ask how the Warden felt? THANKS EVERYONE. We'll see how well I care about your sister or your mommy's book or your stupid sword next time!
I got over it. Eventually.

Yeah. Alistair was like, "Oh, you knew that guy? Well, it's better this way really. He had to die."
I can't bring myself to attack Tamlen even when he's swinging at me and then everyone else swarms him and he's dead in two seconds. >_<

It kinda reminds me when after Thane died nobody came to comfort Shepard after she lost her love...nobody mentions him. Smh.

It's true. I love the Origins companions, but they weren't the most empathetic bunch. Poor Tamlen. And don't even get me started on Fenris's "consoling" Hawke after Leandra's death in DA2. Yeah, thanks for nothing, dude. Very helpful. See you tomorrow so you can keep pretending we didn't sleep together, too. You know, for the next three years.
Actually, some empathy is one of my biggest wishes for the new companions. It would be awesome if they asked how the Inquisitor was doing once in a while, instead of just always needing/wanting things themselves. I do enough mothering in real life. In-game, it's like, "Yeah, thanks, just trying to save the world here, MAYBE A BACK RUB WOULD BE NICE THANKS FOR ASKING. Bunch of selfish, nug-humping dirt farmers."
I do have hope it'll be better this time!

I literally stopped romancing Fenris after that and loaded up an earlier save, I couldn't deal with how tone deaf his response was and blowing off my Hawke after being intimate
.
edit: More empathy from companions would be a good thing.

I saw a funny comic about Fenris' poor attempt to comfort Hawke and she stopped him and said, "Just take off your pants." It was really funny but the artist has taken all her comics down last I Iooked. ![]()

I still give credit for the fact the companions do come and try to comfort Hawke after that happened, even if it was awkward. It was a step up from what we got in DA:O.
I seem to recall someone saying the companions in DAI aren't always good about having the Inquisitor's back, but I do hope someone thinks to ask how the they are feeling now and then. I was over playing therapist to everyone else while trying to save the world by the end of ME3. It's too bad a response like "suck it up and figure it out for yourself, I got sh*t to do" would probably break a friendship arc. Sometimes you do need a friend to tell you to stop whining and get on with it. Our video game companions seem to need that more than most. ![]()

I agree with all of you. I love to bits DAO's companions, end even if the feeling of go "all Gibbs" on Fenris was big (but really the feeling was there for all DA2...I have this headcanon my Hawkes have ruined and callous hands after all these years in kirkwall Gibbs slapping all her companions) Sometines it feel like they don't care about the PC.
Thane's death was quite disappointing.
Sigh. at least I see I'm not the only one that find some things about DAO where a little disappointing. I still have to drink that bottle of wine with Shianni and tell her everithing, and to explain Alistair abouth the marriage. I have to say I was disappointed by those, I know, little and good even if leaft for headcanon, but cute things. ![]()
I hope not only the romances, but the friendships will have some moments of comfort from the companions, or some personal questions.

Oh, my! I wasn't following all this then or I could have warned him. I've actually grown Scotch bonnets (and Thai dragons, and several other peppers that make jalapenos taste mild), but they were for someone to use in a batch of nuclear chili for a cookoff kind of thing. My eyes watered just being NEAR that pot of chili while it was cooking, and I like my digestion too much to spend days paying for actually eating some.

This so much. And Eamon sending my best friend back to the Tower to made Tranquil or killed annoyed me to know end. Eamon just calmly conndems a man who thought he was following the orders of the leader of Ferelden to tranquility and expects me to be BFF with him. Sorry mate. Next time you need help I wont make every effort to save you, your wife and your son. And NONE of my companions showed the slightest bit of sympathy. Well, I know some people who wont be getting their inner demons dealt with next time!

No kidding! I'd teased out every bit of conversation with him and with the other Dalish on the subject of Tamlen during the Origin and it was a shock to discover him later and then hear him say that just before he attacks. ![]()
For just a second, I also read DG's tweet as Lavellan, and it took me another second to remember he didn't write Solas's dialogue then realize who actually said that. Yes, that was definitely evidence that DG is a sick man who feasts on gamer tears. It's also evidence of an effective writer or VA if he or she can provoke a strong emotional reaction, positive or negative.

Awww, as someone who sucks at comforting others, I actually liked Fenris's... verbal headpat, lol. At least he made an effort! I'm pretty sure as a Cousland you can tell Alistair about your whole family being slaughtered and he's just like, "wow that sucks brah, sorry" and nobody gives a fig that the female City Elf's groom was murdered. Wynne does get a nice line about Shianni, though... and I'm pretty sure she comments on you being the last of the Couslands. It's been a loooong time since I played the HN origin!
Anyway, guess what I'm trying to say is, yes, more reactivity would be nice. I don't need companions blowing smoke up my butt or anything, but a little sympathy would be appreciated... do you think the Inquisitor will be able to talk toSolastheir companions about their feelings regarding the whole "everybody got nuked except me and all I got was this $@%! green hand" thing?
Oh! And I meant to say that that Tamlen line absolutely killed me.
Alistair: Have you ever lost anyone close to you?
Coulsand: Well, my entire family (including my 10 year old nephew) and all our staff (most of whom I've know since I was born) were recently murdered by my dad's best friend. And Duncan took me away from my parents as they were dying.
Alistair: Oh. SO ABOUT DUNCAN (who I knew for six months...)

Yeah, I can see Fenris sucking at sympathy being in line with his character, but I just felt like his entire romance was such a weird, disjointed heap of WTF that never really had much of an emotional payoff. It felt unfinished to me. I mean, Gideon Emery's voice can get me to forgive a multitude of sins, and the, er, composition of Fenris's pixels was certainly right up my alley, but the whole deal left me more frustrated than anything. And I couldn't get through Anders's romance. He just isn't my cup of tea. I pretty much just wanted to run off with Varric after my first playthrough, which is probably a big reason why I never made it all the way through another one.
And I think I've played Origins too many times, because as much as I love Alistair (and I really do), there are moments when I just want to slap the **** out of him. Moments when Grey Wardening feels a lot like babysitting. For no pay. Ooh, and this:
This so much. And Eamon sending my best friend back to the Tower to made Tranquil or killed annoyed me to know end. Eamon just calmly conndems a man who thought he was following the orders of the leader of Ferelden to tranquility and expects me to be BFF with him. Sorry mate. THIS WAS NOT OKAY. I always felt like Eamon was just using Alistair anyway. Didn't trust him. *grumble*
There are a few companions this time who seem like they might be good listeners. Solas, for sure. And actually, I've gotten sort of attached to the idea of Cass being my Lavellan's BFF. She seems like she'd be a good friend, under the tough exterior.
