...I have a Solas drabble for everyone as a late delurking gift!  It's SFW, just friendship, and it might be eh since I haven't written fanfiction in, what, two years?

The first time the nightmares came, she'd huddled into a ball in her dark cell, burying her head between her knees until the strange phantom screams finally faded.  The second time, she'd mercifully woken up before the dream became really horrific.

The third time was impossible to hide.  She awoke suddenly and violently, thrashing against the hands forcing her into a sitting position.  She had a vague sense of being surrounded and lunged for the knife lying just above her pillow.

Another hand lightly touched her forehead, gentle and cool.  "Deep breaths, Inquisitor.  You are in your tent, camping in the forests just outside Redcliffe.  Open your eyes.  Slowly."

Her sleep-fogged mind put a name to the voice. Solas.  The hands holding her still loosened their grasp, and she jerkily pulled free.  She felt Solas's fingers brush her cheek and slowly opened her eyes to meet his; his face was quiet, calm, but his eyes studied her gravely.

Clariel Lavellan blinked once, then looked around the tent.  The Seeker sat beside her, looking odd without her usual armor.  "I was switching watch with Varric when I heard you screaming to wake the dead," said Cassandra, her eyes darting between the elf and her hunting knife.  "You had all but strangled yourself with the blankets, and the mark on your hand--"

With a slightly sick feeling in her stomach, Clariel looked down at her left hand.  The green glow was fading, but still apparent to everyone.  "Thank you, Seeker," she said.  "Both of you."

"If you would leave us for a moment, Seeker Cassandra?" said Solas, still watching the young Inquisitor intently.  Cassandra looked like she was going to protest, then shrugged her shoulders and marched out of the tent.  Solas waited until he heard her footsteps retreating down the camp.  "May I?" He gestured toward her left hand.

Clariel let him take her limp fingers and trying to just focus on her breathing.  She couldn't really remember the dream--or maybe she just didn't want to.  It was certainly a silver lining she hadn't expected.  Gradually, her heart rate dropped closer to normal, though she could still feel cold sweat beading on her skin.  She glanced at Solas, who was studying her palm minutely.

"It does not seem to be spreading," he finally said, dropping her hand.  The green glow had disappeared entirely by now.

"I suppose you'll want to hear what I dreamed about," said Clariel wearily.  "But I don't really--"

"Inquisitor," he said gently, "I don't need to hear anything if you are not ready to tell me."

All she could do was stare at him.  After a whirlwind of interrogations and demands since her ill-fated trip to Haven, the words coming out of his mouth didn't seem to fit in with the world.  Finally, she realized he was waiting for a response of some kind.  "Thank you," she managed to whisper.

They sat there in silence for a few minutes before she found her voice again.  "Could I ask you something, Solas?"

He smiled a little.  "You just have, but of course."

"You're lucid when you're in the Beyond.  Can you find other dreamers?"

He frowned, and she caught some unease and hesitation before he nodded.

Clariel gathered her courage and took a deep breath.  "When I have nightmares like these, do you think you could do something to help?  In the Beyond, I mean."

Solas's frown deepened.  "I could," he began slowly.  "But you do not know what you're asking.  In order to help you, I would have to enter your dreams."  He paused to let his words sink in.  "When you dream, your mind is vulnerable, your thoughts and secrets laid bare.  It is why the somniari were so feared."

"I'll take it over being afraid to close my eyes at night," she replied, unfazed.  He looked like he was about to protest, so she held up a hand to stop him.  "None of us are mages, and most mages don't know as much about the Beyond as you do.  I already have to trust that you know what you're doing.  If you wanted me dead or corrupted, you've had ample opportunity...which you clearly haven't exploited."

"That is an...interesting vote of confidence."

She shrugged.  "It's the truth.  But I know I'm asking a lot of you.  If you'd rather not do this, I understand."

Solas shook his head.  "I want to help you, Inquisitor.  I also want to you to understand the confidence that you are placing in me.  I promise--"

"Don't," said Clariel sharply.  "People break oaths and promises all the time.  Better not to make them at all."

He blinked at her, surprised.  "...very well.  I will do my best not to intrude upon your dreams unless absolutely necessary.  And I will try not to breach your trust."

Clariel felt herself smiling for the first time in days, a little bit of the tension easing from her shoulders.  "Ma serannas, Solas."

The elven mage cautiously returned her smile as he stood to go.  "You are welcome.  Sleep well, Inquisitor."

I agree with everyone else here that I don't think he's referring to our odd little fandom here. I mean, how often does some random person jump into the thread all, 'what happens when Nosferatu/insert-tired-joke-here turns out to be Judas LOL!!!111' and we're all like 'yeah, bring it, yo.'

 

I mean, there's been a ton of different theories here, ranging from the hopelessly romantic to the hilariously awkward to the outright weird. And I think this is the one fandom where a number of fans have even been intrigued by the idea that Solas might be a villain or in cahoots with the big bad and such. Personally, I prefer a romance that's fairly drama-free and has a happy ending (Garrus from ME being my all-time fave), but I don't care as long as it's interesting. I romanced Anders, twice, because I loved the storyline, even if it didn't exactly end in sunshine and rainbows. I think it's partly because I can seperate myself the real person from my in-game character. If my boyfriend blew up a building in real-life I certainly wouldn't be okay with it, but my militantly pro-mage with her the-world's-going-to-hell-and-I-have-nothing-left-to-lose Hawke? She ran off with him into the sunset and liked it.

 

I think that's why the inclusion of romance in Bioware games is so awesome. It's such a personal thing for people. Although I like Fenris' character and enjoyed both his friendship and rivalry paths a lot, if I wanted some broody dude who likes me but can't figure out what the hell he wants I would've taken back a couple of my exes   And while I liked Zevran's romance plot a lot, there was something about Alistair that won me over every damn time with his stupid rose speech despite me being the opposite of a gushy traditional romantic in real life. And there's something about Solas that just hits all the right notes for me - from his character design, to his voice, his intelligence, the bit of mystery surrounding him. I certainly have my own ideas about how I'd like his romance to pan out, but most of all I'm excited to find out where the game takes it. I want to be surprised.

I read that and liked it. I was a wee bit worried when they mentioned no healing spells but it didn't bother me to much it just meant "No more running into the battle head first team" ! Like bad guy romances, some people were probably worried about another Anders-esque romance. And while I'd call his actions bad, I'm not /entirely/ sure if I'd call ~him~ bad. So there's room for grey area, imo.

Well the one thing they have wrong there, which seems to tie into a lot of their theory: Isn't Solas NOT somniari? I thought he was like, a semi-dreamer at best. He's not like a Feynriel.

...is it also possible he's biologically 40 but traveling though the fade or an eluvian means he enters a space where time moves slower compared to Thedas? Maybe that's the real reason Elves lived longer , not because they aged longer but because Eluvian travel made it seem like they were hundreds of years old. When they could be only spending a few months or years in them.

Well the one thing they have wrong there, which seems to tie into a lot of their theory: Isn't Solas NOT somniari? I thought he was like, a semi-dreamer at best. He's not like a Feynriel.

Wow I guess I didn't think of Solas as a somniari, but that'd actually make sense if that is the case.

 

It would be cool if Solas was an ancient elf who had woken up from Uthenera (the long sleep that ancient elven elders could enter when they grew weary of the world) Especially since supposedly the ancient elves who practiced Uthenera were also dreamers (somniari) and the fact that some of the elves in Uthenera draw life from the Fade, allowing them to survive in sleep for long periods of time without food or water. It might also explain why he is neither a city elf or dalish, rather being from a town or village (perhaps the ancient elven civilization of Elvhenan) and also the strange rhythm of speech he supposedly has. 

 

It'd also be cool if he had something to do with the eluvians or maybe restoring some lost elven culture and magic, I've been waiting for Bioware to explore more of elven lore and I'm excited to see what they do with his character.

I haven't seen a lot of Solas fanfiction out there, TBH.  I did find this lovely slightly-NSFW drabble on AO3, though.

Aha! I've read this one before - I really liked Solas's voice in it.

With how delicate Solas seemed and how much protection he needed in those recent videos, I'm a little nervous about having my mage quizzy be in the same boat. Oh well, I'm still playing a mage!

...is it also possible he's biologically 40 but traveling though the fade or an eluvian means he enters a space where time moves slower compared to Thedas? Maybe that's the real reason Elves lived longer , not because they aged longer but because Eluvian travel made it seem like they were hundreds of years old. When they could be only spending a few months or years in them.

Yes Feynriel is the first Somniari that has been found for years... Are somniari and rift mages really that close? Do these two namings the same?

In the sense of the fade part of the narrative Solas romance does seem like it could be the I'm not sure, heartfelt or relveny compaired to the others. Were all gonna love him regardless. Solas with the possible expection of Blackwall seems like the most mature among the group so hoping we get to see his other side. Though I loved Fenris yay for two new elves who don't brood and complain all the time, not that Fenris dose not have his reasons. Eager to hear his thoughs on rift mages and his thoughts in general.
