I think the animator a need to study anatomy more... Between this and putting Sera's breasts on the bottom of her ribs, I question their knowledge...
It's crazy what moving someone's eyes and nose a slight bit down their face can do, right?
I do think the first one gives him much more of an interesting look. Which is what they might have been going for to give Solas more of an elfy, inhuman look to keep in line with DA2.
In profile he almost seems to have that elven nose, with the straight bridge that doesn't curve down/inward from the forehead.
I don't see much difference between the two images westerbroski posted, but that's just me. 
As a lady, I think the Sera thing bugs me more, but now that I see this, I can't unsee it, haha! He just needs a tiny bit more forehead...
(if only it were that easy... every little model change means that skinning/weighting and texturing would need to be fixed... and hats? But maybe they have some custom tools to work with that eases all that?)
EDIT: Now I feel bad for saying that, but I won't ninja edit. Suffice to say, I like his looks, and imperfections give character and wouldn't dream of changing them. I do, however, think it's interesting to see how a tiny change makes such a big difference to our pattern-seeking human brains.
I thought hedge mages were capable of weird and unpredictable things because they didn't know how to channel their magic? Solas seems to be well practiced, I assumed he'd learnt a bit of unusual magic from spirits.
Solas is described as self-taught, but perhaps. It's just that we've heard some things before about hedge mages manifesting their magic in unusual ways, and it would be interesting to see.
?? Death isn't passive, that's the Hanged Man. Death is the card about CHANGE IS HERE whether your ass likes it or not. The Hanged Man is about choosing to allow the realise the need for change. Death represents change that will drag you kicking and screaming until you start to move with it...
I didn't express myself properly. What I meant with passive is that the subject can't do anything about what's changing, just accept it or not. In The Hanged Man the subject chooses to sacrifice himself and may act passively, but it's still by his choice. Death is inevitable.

Then after I posted I wondered if maybe you were working with a definition only associated to a particular deck. I have seen decks that try to make Death sound like a card where you get a choice in it before... It just isn't a traditional or widespread definition.

Oh I know. I just didn't think his magic would be unchanneled like the ones Pharamond was talking about, because he was self taught. But what Patrick said in the interview made me wonder about what he could have been taught afterwards. Having spirits for friends has to have benefits.

I think the main issue I see with DAI character designs, the things that make them look "ugly" and cause all the complaining, is that there are definitely proportions that are off with a few of them. That's literally all it is and it's just not that big a deal, thankfully!

I'm honestly really surprised at how much they revamped his face! It almost looks like they started from scratch which I wouldn't have expected when he looked so finished in that screenshot from long ago.

I pointed out his eyes looking a little on the high side to someone earlier, and they mentioned he looks more like that original concept art now (with the dwarf quizzy). Which is interesting.
I was a bit shocked to see him at first, but I don't mind it now. The character has turned out like most of us hoped, so that's awesome.
I just realised our favorite bald elf has some pretty impressive lips...
Maybe we can do the Allan summon dance and get him to slyly pass our thoughts about it to the animators. I think it would be a small fix and I sound shallow but it would improve his face so much!!
I don't think Allan would do it , because it would put him in a strange situation with his collegues.
Besides well , fans are always complaining about the design of characters so I doubt they would take us seriously.
Solas's facial proportions seem different in each of the images they gave us today.
In the close-up with the quote, there is more space between the bottom of his nose and his upper lip than in the other images. In the pic where his staff is glowing, his proportions look more like they do in the older pic where he is walking with Cassandra in the background.
