Onto the topic at hand, I really don't think there is a way to settle with those who have strong prejudgments about certain characters. Lots of people already say that they hate Vivienne because a) She's got strong opinions about the mage conflict and She's very high fashion so of course she's gonna be a snooty biatch with no sense of humor or any redeeming qualities whatsoever.

With Cullen people hate him because they want to a) be a hipster because "OMGhes so overrated. Why does everyone like him?!  He's just in there for fan service." or He said some distasteful remarks about certain races in the past so he is, definitely without a doubt still racist because no one can change over the course of +10 years, right?!

 

Some people will just cling onto the idea of not liking a character and will cherry pick every tiny flaw, no matter what ends up.

 

Of course, they may be right. They may absolutely be right. I just don't think it's fair to say bad things about a character before actually playing the game. If Solas is a racist, then that is a part of his character and he has become complex. People have flaws, y'know? That being said, if he's  that truly flawed and Patrick can actually make me love this man when I play the game then that dude will be given all my rewards and respect.

 

Damn...Long rant is long. Anywho. TL;DR  version: Solas thread is awesome 'cause we are open minded and I will reserve opinions of anyone in game until after I'm finished playing said game.

None of the warriors is a bad fit with Solas & Cole. Cass, Blackwall, and Bull all make for a nice team dynamic.

I'm convinced this game is so long just so we have excuse to swap out party members to see their content. There's no way to roll with just a "dream team" and leave others back at the keep. They all need a turn in the party.

Even if Solas is racist towards humans it's not like elves don't have reason to be prejudice against humans in the Dragon Age verse.

I'm not going to brand him a racist or judge any of the companions until I play the game.That banter did sound a bit racist yes but I'm not going to automatically call him one, I'm going to wait till I play the game. If he is racist then oh well, I won't like it but oh well. I pretty much doubt he is but we will have to wait and see.

I don't think Solas will be racist. He's been described as wise, and he is likely to be a mentor figure for ALL quizzies, humans included. So yeah, I think the reason behind the gating will be a different one.

I may be in the minority here, but I kind of hope Solas is a bit of a jerk at times. It just makes sense to me with his character...if he was this introvert who kept away from people and was frustrated with all the labels and binaries people embrace and was still a super understanding and caring character to everyone...idk, that'd read a bit strange to me. I don't want him to be mean...but I anticipate him being kind of an ass sometimes. Not sure exactly how...many he won't have patience for people's ignorance, or maybe he'll be a snob, or maybe he won't understand or care for social cues, or have boundary issues, or maybe he won't be able to see some people's inner complex emotional lives very well or...idk!!! I'm excited. Which sounds weird like...I'm excited to see my fave be an ass!!!! But...I am, lmao. Makes him more real feeling. Also I bet he's got some sick, subtle burns.

i personally didn't think it was racist so much as, well... ribbing on a group that had more power and influence than others. *shrugs* to me, it felt like it was in a way i feel sometimes, where i joke about things that i'm tired of seeing so much of, that i know i can't change.

Solas really didn't sound all that serious to me during that banter. He's just ribbing on humans and being snarky, or at least that's what the tone said to me. They did say that he and Varric would be part of team "humans are crazy". That doesn't mean they actually hate humans. Solas being a complete racist doesn't really fit at all with what we know about him. Then again, maybe he is. We're not going to know until we play the game!

 

If that turns out to be the case, I admit that I won't be happy about it and it'll probably make me like him quite a bit less. But to assume anything about him from one snarky banter seems silly at this point.

Totally agree. I think he's got some subtle burns and a sharp wit and I don't mind him being a bit rough around the edges, makes him more real to me.

Haha no worries! If I made you feel that way too, I didn't mean to. The first time I heard the banter, I must say I had a bit of a "...well then" moment at first just because I didn't quite expect that from Solas. But recalling GDL's delivery of the line made me think it was just snarkiness.

Further, because of the way the society is set up in Thedas, whilst I can't condone the attitudes and language of certain characters, I can certainly understand why they behave and feel so.

 

I guess I'm one of those rare fans who likes every character in BioWare games, even Velanna. The worst I can say about any of them is that Jacob's uninteresting enough that I genuinely forgot about him a few times in ME2.

 

But seriously, people are hating on Vivienne because she supports the circle? We need a voice of the former institution in the Inquisition.

I admit I laughed that banter too. I thought it was funny. I just couldn't believe how fast people were jumping to conclusions in one of the other threads (which got locked I think) that one joke meant he was racist.

As for characters kinda being jerks.... Carver is my favorite character in all Dragon Age games... draw your own conclusions.

I've been going over my opinions in my head since the last few days the discussion about Solas (from a previous thread) had been playing on my mind and I wanted to be able to express myself properly. I love social anxiety

 

I love Velanna and I hope my Canon DR!Warden's attempts to make her see the destructive nature of her behaviour helped her grow. I also secretly love Nathaniel's campaign to drive her insane. It's totally flirting, srsly.

 

I'm pumped for Viv too, I hope her introductory mission/arc isn't too far in the game my total fangirling of Maleficent's style may also play into my adoration of Vivienne.

Oh poor Carver, I always befriend him and have him in my party during The Last Straw, it just feels right to have the Hawkes together again.
