Gotta say his outfit looks very "normal" when compared to the rest almost like an NPC, I know armor not restricted but it does morph so character keep more iconic and unique look, hopefully Solas get more style throw into his look because right he looks like magicial joeschmo :unsure:

@ DragonRacer - I LOVE that! The first full piece of Solas and Inquisitor fanfiction (that I've read) and it's so sweet!

Also, cockblock Cole is adorable and hilarious  :D

@Deebo - I think that's actually the point!

If you want to read the interview it is listed under a spoiler tag in the OP. Hope this helps ;)

Thanks! He does sound really interesting. I look forward to "meeting him" in the game. :)

For those who are interested, we have been very calculated when it comes to engineering our characters imperfections. The development process has a built in erosion mechanism: many stakeholders in many review meetings tend to trim away a characters humanizing flaws and oddities, leaving little more than "pretty" and "safe" . Strip and shave most game characters today and you'd be hard pressed to tell most of them apart. We've worked very hard on Inquisition to safeguard our characters from this erosion process. We want to give them more identity than just their clothes, hairstyle and makeup. It's our hope that after you've spent some time with them, our character's will be as inseparable from their quirks, flaws and oddities as your own friends and family are from theirs.

Wow wow wow it's Matt Rhodes wow!

Yeah, what all the others are saying. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to come and post in here. I don't have much else to say, so I at least wanted to say this.

Okay, so, some of you remember how I had a rather epic Solas dream a few weeks back, where Part 1 was a party camp night scene and Part 2 was a high dragon fight with my Inquisitor trying to free Solas from the dragon's mouth right when my alarm clock rudely ended everything?

I kinda sorta made a thing. Haven't written in quite some time and only just recently has the muse started to return. Today's awesome influx of info - a lot of it which confirmed the small bit of mental image I have in my head of what Solas may be like - made me think about that dream again, so I dabbled a little for fun. Pretty rough, largely exposition (don't feel comfortable attempting banter when we don't really know how these folks sound like or what their speech patterns are), but I think it came out a bit cute and wanted to share. Some of the "Big Happy Family" comments about Solas and Cole also inspired it.  :)

Solas had not gotten very far into the Fade when a rather abrupt, raucous peal of laughter tore through his ears. He shot up, then took a moment to compose himself as the sudden adrenaline surge worked its way out of his system. For so long he had wandered the world in solitude, sleeping alone. He'd trained himself to wake at any nearby sound or disturbance in case of danger, such as an approaching predator - of either the animal or human variety. Now, though, as a volunteer of the Inquisition, it was a skill proving to be detrimental while surrounded by others.

Particularly when those "others" preferred to drink and socialize when he wanted to sleep.

Pinching the bridge of his nose with a deep sigh, Solas grabbed his staff and his journal and crawled out of his tent. If he couldn't walk the Fade just yet, at least he could read about it. The elf let a small stream of magic flow into the stave, just enough to bring out a bit of light, and planted it into the ground. Then, he sat down cross-legged and leaned back against a tree, opening up his journal and turning to the most recent section he'd been penning.

Another howling bellow of baritone Qunari mirth assaulted him. Furrowing his brow, Solas glanced up in time to see the Iron Bull clapping the Inquisitor on the shoulder while she grinned ever so mischievously. 'Ah,' he thought, 'she must be on a roll again.' He snorted, imperceptibly shaking his head. He supposed the only reason she dragged him along as opposed to Sera was because of his Fade knowledge; after all, she and Sera shared a rather unusual adoration for crude and often sexual humor. He must seem positively boring to travel with in comparison. And for some reason Solas couldn't quite place his finger on, that thought saddened him slightly.

At just that moment, the Inquisitor glanced over in his direction. Her face was lit up both by the campfire and the radiance of her smile, always genuine and heartfelt. Something rare to find these days, especially when it was given to someone who was both an elf and a mage. And then Solas realized she was looking at him overly long and that he, too, was gazing at her for an uncomfortable length of time, and he quickly averted his eyes back down to his journal and pretended to look engrossed in his study, hoping fervently that the warm feeling flushing his cheeks would be difficult for her human eyes to detect this far from the light of the campfire.

"Inquisitor!"

Solas glanced up at Cole's voice.

"Hey, Inquisitor!" Cole called, running over from the treeline opposite the camp. "What are those flying things over there?" He pointed toward a few, flickering specks of light. "They're not wisps, but they're sort of like them, too, you know?"

"Well, Cole, let's have a look, shall we?" the warrior answered, placing her flask on the ground and standing up to follow the spirit.

The elf watched them surreptitiously, glancing back down whenever it looked like one of the other party members might turn in his direction. While most understood why he had a fascination with a Fade spirit made manifest, he didn't exactly want to give away that he was becoming equally fascinated with the Inquisitor - with the human who didn't seem to notice pointed ears, with the warrior who didn't appear prejudice towards benevolent creatures from the Fade, with a person who was almost as equally curious and open-minded as he.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Inquisitor quickly saw what had Cole so excited, and she couldn't help but chuckle. After all, the little insects flying, dancing, and blinking about had captivated her as a child as well.
"They're fireflies, Cole."
"Fireflies?" he asked, wrinkling his eyebrows and nose in confusion. "They aren't on fire, though."
She laughed openly now. "No, no, not literally flies made of fire," she explained. "They just look that way to folks, and I guess the name stuck."
"Do they bite?"
The Inquisitor shook her head. "No, they're perfectly harmless." Then, she crouched slightly, eyeing one of the creatures, and then pounced forward and quickly clasped her hands together.
"Did you squish it?" he asked, sounding rather alarmed.
She raised an inquisitive eyebrow at him and grinned slyly. "What do you think?" she asked, holding her clasped hands close to her chest. "Is the firefly dead? Or alive? Or does the potential for both suddenly exist in this current uncertainty?"
Cole gave her a confused stare. "You've been drinking from your little metal cylinder again, haven't you?"
Iron Bull, obviously eavesdropping, broke out into deep laughter at that.
The Inquisitor couldn't help but join in. After a moment, she smirked and shrugged her shoulders. Then, she made a throwing motion towards Cole while opening her hands, and out flew the firefly blinking and shining in front of the spirit's surprised face. He started to laugh along with the other two before running off to chase after the fireflies, determined to catch one, too, just like the Inquisitor had.
As Cole ran off and the Iron Bull gazed into the campfire seemingly lost in thought, the warrior ambled over to Solas and sat down next to him. "Is this seat taken?" she asked, shooting him her signature smirk.
The elf glanced over briefly. "No, go ahead," he answered quietly before returning once more to his journal.
They sat in amiable silence for a while. Then, looking between Solas's reading and Iron Bull at the campfire, she said, "I'm sorry if we woke you up. I'm not sure either of our mouths have a decent volume control on them."
Solas looked up at Iron Bull for a moment, then turned to consider the Inquisitor. "No, it's all right. I'll get used to it. Eventually."
She ducked her head in embarrassment and a bit of shame. "Sorry..." She scratched at her shoulder self-consciously. "Soooo... what's it like, walking the Fade? Is it like being in control of your dreams or something?"
He paused, then shut the book and set it down.
"I'm sorry," she said again, suddenly looking uncomfortable. "I probably should just leave you alone. I mean, you were trying to read and here I am being all rude and running my mouth non-stop and --"
"-- you're fine, it's fine," he responded quickly. "It's just... hmmm, it's complicated. And especially hard to explain since you don't experience the Fade as I do when you sleep... or as any mage does, truthfully."
The Inquisitor blushed slightly and looked down at her left hand with the faint green Fade glow. It was incredibly awkward having a piece of the Fade seemingly a part of her and having consciously closed Tears, but having no recollection of ever entering it in her dreams as the mages did. Not to mention that the only dreams she even remembered at all lately had started to involve him. Not to mention that part of her wondered if those were really dreams or if the elf had more conscious control of the Fade and the sleeping world than he let on...
As she stared at her scarred hand, Solas reached down and tentatively placed his hand on top of hers. Feeling her heartbeat quicken, the Inquisitor looked up into his eyes. It appeared as if he wanted to say something, clenching and unclenching his jaw a few times as if working up the courage.
"Hey, look, you two!" Cole exclaimed, running up to the pair. The spirit opened his clasped hands and several fireflies started blinking about in the air before them. "I caught them!"
Solas turned a bit pink and quickly yanked his hand back, then busied himself looking at Cole instead. "Would you look at that," he remarked. "Well done, Cole."
The moment broken, the warrior felt a pang of regret. Then, she smiled up at Cole and, as she always did, moved along. She patted the ground next to her and said, "Sit down for a while and join us, won't you?" The spirit broke out in a wide grin.
O3O
More plz!  <3  <3  <3
Also thanks for stopping by Mr. Rhodes, I think all of the Characters look Amazing in their own way.  :)
I wonder if we'll find Solas napping around portions of Skyhold and our various camps and keeps?
Varric: So Sleepy, that magical dream-walking thing you do. You do that everywhere we go?
Solas: Most places. It's sort of like scouting ahead with magic.
Varric: Why do it around Skyhold then?
Solas: Oh, that's just me taking a nap. People tend to leave you alone if they think you're wandering the Fade.
Varric: I'm surprised no one's ever bothered you.
Solas: Sera tried to draw a mustache on me once. She stopped after I started listing off the minutiae of all the dreams she had that week. I swear, that girl's mind is worse than that brothel Iron Bull dragged me into.
I'm curious about how today's information has affected everyone's opinions on potential romances (or just Solas in general). Like...my first pick was Cullen (loved him since DAO) but now my first playthrough is definitely going to be Solas if he's a LI.. Anyone else in the same boat? I've always had Cullen and Solas as my two favorite options in the game.. I'm just surprised how much Solas has edged out Cullen :D
If he isn't a romance, who are you going to go for instead? Did anyone have zero interest in him before the new info but now are considering him as an option? Or is he just going to be a bro to your inquisitor and you aren't interested in a romance with him (if there is one)?
Well I sort of have this thing where I try to have my characters be male mages (thanks to Baldur's Gate), but different races for each title.
So... DA - Elf, DAII - Human (since Hawke was just that), for this game I'm hoping to be able to go with a male Qunari mage.
Solas is definitely my first choice to romance since I felt the most curious about him. Cassandra being second, hopefully for my female inquistor. And for the other... I hope people don't jump on me for this, but I was hoping for Cole for be a choice (asexually!). Guess it doesn't help that I was exposed to tons of Chinese stories and dramas with Ghost Love stories...
Other than what I mention though? If things aren't what I hope for, I'll wing it, all I know is that I want to play a male Qunari mage.
For the romance discussion, Solas is my second favorite romance choice after Dorian, but I feel like there's very little chance he'll be bi at this point. It's fair enough if he's straight. Really, I just hope anyone other than Iron Bull is available for m/m so I can romance someone other than Dorian on my second run. lol
I'd like for Solas to be bi so everyone can have a chance with him, but if he's straight (assuming he's an LI, duh) then I can't get obsessive and romance him on every character I ever make, male or female.  If he's available and bi I might have trouble not romancing him so I wouldn't get the chance to try out the other LIs :P
Edit: Also, if Solas isn't an LI I wish a dev would come stomp on my heart now so I could have time to recover before October.
I've never romanced more than one character before, so I can kind of understand. I mean, only DA2 and ME3 had options, but still. lol
There's a good chance it's going to be the Dorian show this time. Maybe I'll give Cullen a shot, if he's available.
That said, Solas has nudged Dorian out of the way for my second run, though.  :lol: Really, the only thing that could bump Cullen out of the number one slot is if they announced an asexual LI.
While I wasn't overly interested in Solas as an LI before all this info, it's more because of the lack of known personality than anything else. I was fully expecting to love the guy when we were given more on him. (Everything about him screamed 'nerd' before, so I'm pumped that was right.
I'm just loving the variety in all of the characters so far. I may be a straight male, but I will most certainly be willing to try out all of the different romance arcs such as Solas (if he's available), Dorian, Sera, and Cullen. It will be all in good fun.
My first playthrough will be with Cassandra as I enjoyed the bits of her character in DA: 2 and from what we know of her I look forward to getting to know her even more :)
I LOVE THIS. Bioware is known for their characters and this direction makes them feel so much more real, so much more relatable. I applaud this. Wholeheartedly.
This so much lol. I really wish we could know soon :( I'm hoping at the very latest that we can know by PAX Prime (which is only a month before release) but while I'm mostly interested in Solas' LI status, I hope the whole chart is revealed sooner rather than later.
@Phate - Yeah I almost feel bad about relegating Cullen to my 2nd playthrough :D (if Solas isn't a LI he'll be 1st) but I guess the NPC status of Cullen kind of helps that decision too unfortunately. I'd like to romance a companion before an NPC/advisor the first time, as silly as that sounds..although it sounds like the advisors will be huge parts of the game.
Or maybe I just like Solas that much, idk :D
Even though I play a variety of characters, there is often only one or two LI's, in DA games, that I really "pine" for. As for gender and sexuality, I have no problem playing all kinds, but being a straight female (and one who enjoys playing a female in games with gender choice), I do like to start with that combo. But, that means I am putting all my eggs in one basket (for straight female). I have never been interested in Cullen as an LI (perfectly fine with him as a character and addition to the team, but no interest in romance at all).
I thought about it often, regarding IB (if he was a Bi LI), and the only two potential PC's I could role play as romancing him, are a Male qunari warrior/rogue, and maybe Male dwarf (but that is if race gating wasn't present in the game). I just can't imagine any female PC I could role with - or mage - that would ever romance IB. The "Qun" kind of gets in the way (even if he is now "Qun-light". heh!). And the horns. He rolls over in bed, and gores the Inquisitor through their face. DOH!
Iron Bull: "Oops. My bad."
Cassandra: *walks in on said carnage* "This is Bullsheet! I should cut those horns off, for that. But right now, I need to cut his/her hand off. Get a knife."
(That's our Cassandra. Always a pragmatist. ;) )
Blackwall has the potential "tragic" element I will avoid like the plague (Thanemancer here, so.....
Spoiler
, so again we are back to Solas for my straight ladies.
I may even have some troubles with Bi/Lesbian PC's too, depending on who we get as our Bi choice. So I guess the bottom line is, my female PC's may end up SOL for romance.
I pretty much posted the same thing in the romance thread, a few days ago. My posts read kind of rigid, truth be told. LOL! Solas would be ashamed....so narrow minded, coldi! *tsk* :lol:
**EDIT**
Good god, was drunk when I wrote this...all of 15 minutes ago?!?!? I have gone from not being able to "art", to not being able to write as well. :pinched:
If Solas were active right now I would think it would be great to put this in the OP as well for those who do not feel like digging. It would be great for as many people who come to this thread to see Matt's post and get a general explanation on why the characters are how they are.
But Solas has done enough hard work for now so I will probably ask later. ^_^
I concur! I think it should be all over the internets, lol.
Okay, so, some of you remember how I had a rather epic Solas dream a few weeks back, where Part 1 was a party camp night scene and Part 2 was a high dragon fight with my Inquisitor trying to free Solas from the dragon's mouth right when my alarm clock rudely ended everything?
I kinda sorta made a thing. Haven't written in quite some time and only just recently has the muse started to return. Today's awesome influx of info - a lot of it which confirmed the small bit of mental image I have in my head of what Solas may be like - made me think about that dream again, so I dabbled a little for fun. Pretty rough, largely exposition (don't feel comfortable attempting banter when we don't really know how these folks sound like or what their speech patterns are), but I think it came out a bit cute and wanted to share. Some of the "Big Happy Family" comments about Solas and Cole also inspired it.  :)
*fantastic snip*
Dude. Dude, dude, dude. I was hooked, that was great!
*would love to see more of it, too*
And just to make it relevant in the OP it could be like:
"So there seems to be some questions and concerns on Solas' appearance. Well here is Matt Rhodes' post that gives a brief response to this. *insert post here*"
For those who are interested, we have been very calculated when it comes to engineering our characters imperfections. The development process has a built in erosion mechanism: many stakeholders in many review meetings tend to trim away a characters humanizing flaws and oddities, leaving little more than "pretty" and "safe" . Strip and shave most game characters today and you'd be hard pressed to tell most of them apart. We've worked very hard on Inquisition to safeguard our characters from this erosion process. We want to give them more identity than just their clothes, hairstyle and makeup. It's our hope that after you've spent some time with them, our character's will be as inseparable from their quirks, flaws and oddities as your own friends and family are from theirs.
*flails because Matt Rhodes*
Solas looks great! I like everything! High five!
I respect your opinion for not liking him and I hope that his personality changes your mind about him. Good to see you are at least willing to give him a chance. ;)
