Solas knows temptation.  It is an old and familiar companion to any mage, the urge to just take a little more power, push the boundaries of reality.  He's spent most of his life gently brushing it aside, acknowledging it without giving in.

 

But his Inquisitor's sleeping mind is an entirely different beast--whenever he pulls her from a nightmare, it gives him tantalizing snippets of her thoughts, secrets, and past life.  He sees her as a child in the woods, watching birds fly with fascination and envy.  As a youngster, saving the life of a human merchant.  She's frightened of elk, but not of mages or templars.  Her favorite food is her mother's rabbit stew.  Each time her mind shows him a glimpse, the temptation to peer deeper is so strong he has to force himself to wake.

 

Over the last few months, her nightmares have tapered off somewhat--he can't decide whether to be relieved or disappointed.  After all, she's no mage.  She isn't aware of the battle he fights every time he hears her spirit screaming in the Fade.  Shielding her from the nightmare is the easy part--protecting her from his own curiosity is much, much harder.

 

Then she appears one night in his dreams--a pale shade of her, formed from the raw stuff of the Fade.  He frowns at it critically the first time he sees it.  It's a poor imitation; his Inquisitor's eyes are fierce with intelligence, her voice quiet and gentle, her skin interrupted here and there with scars and blemishes.  This thing is an Orlesian dollmaker's version--smooth, silent, and utterly without substance.

 

He dismisses it with a wave of his hand, only to have its form resolve into one even less welcome.  "Ah, you must the dreamwalker who has been so difficult of late," the desire demon says with a grin, showing her pointed teeth.  "I could do better...if only you'd let me meet this pretty little Inquisitor of yours."

 

Solas says nothing, quietly swallowing the anger that flares within him.  Instead, he turns his back to the demon and calmly begins to walk away.

 

The creature easily catches up, keeping pace with him on clawed feet that never quite touch the ground.  "Come now, don't be so joyless!  You've merely sparked my curiosity, just as she set yours aflame.  It is rare that I meet a mortal who desires something so very badly."  She floats in front of him, blocking his path.  "I won't hurt your pretty friend.  I promise."

 

The last few words come out in his Inquisitor's voice, sweet and reasonable.  Solas takes a deep breath, closes his eyes, and slowly counts down from twenty.  When he opens his eyes again, she's still there smiling at him.  She reaches out to him, and as she does, she changes into a much more convincing version of the woman he has promised to protect--down to the callouses on her right hand, and the flecks of gold in her eyes.

 

If he hadn't just seen the demon change, he might not have known the difference.

 

The thought makes him shudder, and he hastily backpedals out of the dream.  The desire demon does nothing, simply stands and watches him struggle to wake, her gentle laughter ringing in his ears.  "Come back soon, dreamwalker," she whispers.

What a cliffhanger, this is really cool. I wonder if something like that will go down in the game. I could see it happening slowly over the arc of the romance and then hit a culmination that ends with some crazy boss battle in the fade lol.
