Marketed characters are probably chosen for mass appeal. Given that one of the first things people did with Solas's design when it was released was mock and "fix" it, he's probably not a good choice. Sera is irreverent, like Bull and Varric - I imagine the MAYHEM banter packs more of marketing punch than a polite debate between Cass and Solas about magic.

 

Marketing isn't really for us. We're already buying the game.

 

We did get to see a lot of Solas in the new gameplay footage, at least. He isn't as neglected as some characters.

Hey guys, I have a theory that I'm starting to worry about (and I'm not sure if we've commented on this already, I've been away from the forum for a wee bit) BUT a little while ago, Patrick Weekes posted something on Twitter alluding to his son finding out that a character he had fought for to be in the game may be working for the bad guys (and his son was very upset about it). 

 

And for some reason, this didn't sit right with me, because we all know Patrick Weekes wrote the character, Solas. So now I'm wondering, what if Solas (being that he loves the Fade) causes the Breach? What if he's working for the Elder One this whole time and betrays us in the end? 

 

Of course, I don't want to believe this; I want him to be the epic Obi-Wan-like character I'm building him up in my head to be, but what if? We don't know much about his backstory nor do the writers wish to share much information. He also loves the Fade, doesn't mind demons, and dislikes humans (based on his banter with Varric). I know we'll find out soon enough, but just like the dragon-nomming scene made us nervous, WHAT IF?

Im not worry. Even if it would be a truth, that Solas is working for Elder One, It doesn't mean that he will betray us at the end no matter what. There's about 40 endings ( hope that's true), and there is a lot of possibilites. Don't know if You played NWN2 and remember Bishop. SPOILER..he betrayed PC, but if he was in love with female player, first he tried to help PC, giving her advice before shadows attacked the Keep, and then he never fight in a final battle against her. So, I think, even if Solas is a betrayer, he can change sides becouse of friendship or even love. Also remember, that Devs added Solas as a LI after release date was delayed, so some things could be re-writen.

@Rebby, saaaaame with the hipster-ish annoyance with over-hyped things! I liked bald pajama elves before it was cool. Oh wait...it's still not all that cool. SUCCESS! 

 

I AM still excited for Cullen, though...I feel like he's gotten surprisingly little attention, considering how big (or at least enthusiastic) his fan base is. Leliana has gotten a lot more. Also, he and his voice are hot. It's shallow of me. I don't care.

 

I'm ambivalent about Viv. Love her design, but I'm not good at playing mercenary enough for a character like that to really mesh with mine. Then again, I still love Morrigan and she was p***ed off at me a lot of the time. So we'll see.

 

Super curious about Blackwall. I have no idea if I'l want to romance him, but I mean, there is like NOTHING on the guy. He's got a great voice actor. Oh well, guess we'll hear more of him in a couple weeks, if nothing else!

In Dragon Age: Inquisition, we also have a quest that occurs specific to the party member, a plot which initiates about halfway through the main plot which is incredibly important to the party member (presented as a »could you help me out with this?«). Depending on how the player completes it, it changes the approval integer in a large way … and, furthermore, gates the »ending« for positive approval. Meaning that, in order for the player to get to the end of the positive approval track and have the party member consider them a »true friend«,

 

So we still have personal story quests. That's cool, 'cause I enjoy those.

 

If this is a party member who can be romanced, at some point in the buildup of positive approval, we allow the player to flirt with the character (or the character flirts with the player, and the player responds positively). This is, in essence, the player telling us: »I would be interested in romancing this character.« At this point, the normal positive approval conversations would divert to conversations specific to the romance.

 

Though I am a modern woman unafraid to make the first move, I find myself liking the idea of Solas making the first move.

Interesting. I wouldn't mind that either, though I thought they were doing away with the companions flirting first after the whole Anders thing. Can't wait to see what this means first-hand.

I loved the article on party members! Very interesting and it gave me a much better understanding on the writing process and how I'll proceed in DA:I. Two questions I had: Will the gift system be a factor as it was in the previous games and to what extent? I plan to pick my words carefully with my party, but a well timed present does go a long way. Also, will there be any one, single choice that can make a party member leave the Inquisition regardless of how high their friendship is with me?

 

1) Gifts are present in DAI, but only for those characters who are romanceable. It’s part of their romance arc, and more story-related rather than “give them X gift to increase approval”. There is a way to (more or less) grind approval for a party member, but it’s different for each character as to what that involves (but does not involve gifts). You’ll see.

 

2) Hmmm…I had to think about this one, as all the characters work a little differently. I would say, on the whole, that no—there is never one single choice that will make them up and leave you regardless of their approval. I wish I was at work, so I could turn to the other writers and go, “Is that right? Did I qualify that statement enough?” I’m not, however, so it’ll have to do.

Well, guys, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the marketing team has their obvious favorites. I, for once, think that it's kind of dissapointing to know that Varric, who was a companion in the previous game, is getting a trailer over some of the other, least known companions (like Blackwall, who we know little to nothing about, or Cole, who if you didn't read Asunder probably haven't got a clue of who he is beyond "fade spirit who thinks himself a human boy" or something). But still, that doesn't mean I don't love Varric. I just wish we got to know more about the others, like y'all.

   Also, I read the comment that Gaider made regarding gifts and I'm intrigued. I have been making headcanons like crazy about which romance will get which gift. Solas would probably like a book or something dalish  

   PS: and I know that Vivienne was featured in like a bazillion videos, but I still can't get angry. She's a queen and I love her to bits even if I have still to meet her in game haha.

Yeah that was definitely in reference to his tabletop RP that he DMs....don't worry, it wasn't at all about Dragon Age. It was like some shopkeeper or something 

 

 

Also, I love this whole gift thing being a part of the romance arc....that seems extremely cute...  I can't wait to find out what it is with Solas!

It's probably plot related to getting their true friend status, at least that's what I would guess. I'm sure you can also use it to initiate romance.
