Protector
She stood on a tree branch with her slanted bluish grey eyes peered around every corner of the forest. Her light blonde hair was kept off her face in the tight ponytail she put it in. Her long, slender fingers curled around the wooden bow while she positioned one of her arrows against the string. She could hear them in the distance, but she didn’t show any fear. She simply remained crouched upon the branch, not moving or making a sound. The only movement she made was a slight turn of her head to look out of the corner of her eye.
It was only to have Solas in her sights. He remained on the ground, his eyes closed and his breathing steadied. He remained that way for several hours, like he always did when he wanted to go into the Fade. She wasn’t a mage, so she could never join him, despite her wishes to do so. However, she made him a promise…to watch over his body. They came to this solution when he went into the Fade sometime after they met. The memory was clear in her mind, as if it happened yesterday.
He had gone into the Fade to get answers about a group of demons that settled in the Hinterlands. She thought he would be safe in camp, so she and the others had went to scout around the area. It wasn’t long before she heard demonic cries near the camp. She could remember the fear for his safety, and she immediately ran back. She didn’t realize it would be a Pride Demon, of all demons, that would appear. She fought hard against it, and she managed to take it down, before she blacked out from his last attack. She woke up with Solas standing over her, concerned for her wellbeing. No words spoke between them, but that was the day they made a vow. She was his protector, like he was her mentor with her own connection to the Fade. She was his archer, and he was her mage. And now, he needed her while their enemies were trying to surround them.
Slowly, she pushed herself into a standing as she pulled back the string and the arrow. “Don’t worry, lethallin.” She whispered under her breath. “I am right here…” She closed her eyes for a moment and took in a deep breath. Within that brief moment, she could feel Solas beside her. His presence brought a serene feeling through her body, and she could almost see him looking at her with his blue eyes. She felt his soft, yet firm, grip upon her arm. It was like a gentle squeeze, a reassurance that he had faith in her.
A smile graced her lips slightly before her eyes shot open. The sounds of footsteps brought her back to reality, and her firm look returned. She pulled back on her arrow slightly, and when a Sloth Demon came from the shadows, she immediately fired. True to her aim, it imbedded itself into its neck and he fell to the ground. His bloodcurdled, rattled cry echoed in the forest, causing more people to call out. That caused her to smirk slightly before she went to pull out another arrow.
“I won’t let them get you, lethallin, no matter what.”
