did you all talk to Cole after the credits? Solas seems to speak through him and then wipe his memory or something unless I misunderstood. He said he had to take his journey alone and couldn't have anyone he cared about (cole) watching him.

Alright, here are some of my thoughts/reactions to the romance:

The Solas romance was literally the most beautiful romance I've ever played in a game, it moved me to tears, not just from sadness, but from happiness and the sheer depth of feeling as well. I don't regret it at all - I think it was really well-written and I love how centrally it ties into the plot by virtue of Solas's involvement in the storyline. I of course would have loved more content but that's always the way isn't it? Some of the other romances have more scenes but for me the trade-off (Solas' major role in main plot) is fine.

 

I don't doubt that they were intimate. There are several references to it, at least one from Solas and at least one from Sera. There was plenty of physical affection between them anyway so I don't mind.

 

Solas is a completely fascinating character and his personality is.. perfect. I love that his arc simultaneously answered age-old questions about the DA universe (what is Flemeth) while also posing new ones (what's going on with Solas)?

 

Soon I'll get to work updating the OP with new things - links to Solas romance on YouTube, vids of party banter where it's referenced, etc. I think it would be good for us to collect them together. I also think it would be good for us to collect together all the various tidbits that some people may miss - for example Cole's dialogue referencing romanced Solas and the letter sent to the Inquisitor from Leliana that shows that Lavellan does know that he's a centuries old being. So if you come across anything, post it in the thread or PM it to me please.  Obviously anything spoilery added to OP would be put under spoiler tags.

 

I definitely smell a Wolf Hunt DLC. Okay maybe that's just me being hopeful but.. Wolf Hunt DLC.

Also I'd like to say thanks to you all for your patience while I've been away/inactive playing the game!

I reeeally like Solas. Still think he looks ugly, but his personality is awesome! I love his smart ass dialogue. Next playthrough I have to be a female elf so I can romance him.

Someone mentioned #LittleRedRidingLavellan in the spoiler group. I thought it was pretty great.

 

 

I don't suppose we should start a petition for a dlc? Just to wrap things up. If it stays sad, it stays sad. But I really am hoping for a happy ending for Solas and Lavellan. With all the sadness and difficulties that they've faced, it would just be beautiful.

is how much casual physical affection Solas & Lavellan have... like, just when they walk, they're constantly bumping shoulders and brushing their fingers together, she gets right up in his space and the way he pulls her close and holds her so earnestly for smooches... hahaha, it's precious. But srsly, just look at them when they walk. It's precious.

Also I will defend Solas's fugly dance hat to the death. IT'S THE BEST.

"It changes everything, but it can't" : some people would want that, but solas/fen'harel beleives it wouldn't be right

Did you chose to make Cole more of a spirit? I was wondering about this conversation too. I interpreted it as Cole wiping his own memory of his memories of Real!Cole as it was distracting him from his "purpose" of helping people. But I didn't understand why he referred to himself in third person. I'd have to listen to it again as I definitely didn't understand it.

I will post what I think of Solas and Elves in general  here. :-

First off, I hope that you can remove your vallaslin if you are a male Dalish elf and you are in high approval with Solas. I would really like to remove my male Lavellan's slave markings. 

 

Additionally, I think this is what happened in Elvhenan:- Elvhenan in its heyday was perhaps an amalgamation of Tevinter and Orlais, except it is with Elves. You had hedonism, slavery, debauchery, all of that. The slave elves, those with Vallaslin, rebelled against their masters.

 

Most likely Fen'Harel would have encouraged them or help foster the dissent, which earned him his nickname as the Trickster God. 

 

Since Abelas said that Tevinter were not responsible for the fall of Elvhenan and Arlathan, this implies that it was the elves themselves who were responsible in doing so.

 

My theory is that the elven slaves rebelled against their masters, with the encouragement of Fen'Harel, probably with the help of and the alliance of ancient Tevinter. Slaves cannot just rebel without support so they had to rely on someone. The help Tevinter provided, the magic they provided to the elven slaves might have caused the destruction and sinking of Arlathan.

 

However, I think the total destruction of Arlathan and Elvhenan was not what the elven slaves wanted or intended. They most likely just intended to overthrow their leaders and well, things went awry. This then caused them to point fingers at the shemlen they allied with and hate them for it. Hence, the "Tevinter caused the fall of ancient Elvhenan" myth. It is a half-truth, half-lie.

 

That is why they, the elves, lost their culture, their history, their magics and their history. Because the ones who instigated the fall were slaves and slaves are not very knowledgeable in history, culture, technology or magics. 

 

This is also why we saw the ancient Tevinter actively collaborating with the Dwarves of Cadash Thaig to destroy the Elves who decided to seek refuge there. They were probably doing so because the Elves who fled were not the Elven slaves but remnants of the Elven upper class society. 

 

This is also why Solas who we now know as Fen'Harel has something against the Dalish Elves. Perhaps they were intended to overthrow their rulers and take their places, not destroy Elvhenan. This is why he said something along the lines of Dalish having lost their way. 

 

This would also explain why the Elven "gods" have not spoken to the Elves in ages even though they were around in different forms. Flemeth was for example the Herald of Mythal. 

 

As such, what was left of the ancient Elves were the elven slaves, those who wore vallaslin, those who, for most of their lives, were enslaved and as such lacked the capability to rebuild Elvhenan anew. Even Fen'Harel mentions that the Dales were nothing but a shadow of cities like Arlathan. I mean, you cannot expect groups of slaves to know how to build nations, maintain governments and be masters of magics.

 

This "Vallaslin as a mark of the slave" also shows the parallel of the Dalish Elves with the Casteless of Orzammar. The difference is that the Dalish no longer have anyone to rule over them. 

 

I honestly think that the upper class Elven societies of old had good ties with ancient Tevinter. Both were highly advanced magical societies and based on Solas' attitude towards Blood Magic and the possibility that old Archons were taught Blood Magic by ancient Elves, it is highly likely in their heyday, the upper class in both societies were good pals. 

 

As for Tevinter enslaving the elves, slavery has been practiced by Tevinter for ages. After the fall of the Elvhenan, the freed elves just wandered around. Some would have been either captured as slaves by Tevinter and some would have even willingly joined them as indentured servants.

 

A good parallel to this is the Dwarves of Orzammar...

 

I would like you to picture the casteless dwarves with their brands. Imagine 1000 years ago, some cataclysm happened that effectively wiped out every dwarf in Orzammar except the casteless and effectively destroyed the majority of Orzammar which rendered it not suitable for living.

 

These casteless dwarves, the last group of their kind, ventured into the surface to live.

 

Fast forward a 100 years. See what I mean ? These casteless dwarves, due to their nature of slavery and oppression, had no idea how to build nations, how to engage in diplomacy or advanced technologies. It was all lost. 

 

But they are dwarves, they are proud of it. So they live a nomadic life because they lack the capability, the skill and they faced hostility from other races which prevented them from being able to settle down.

 

Until a point where they managed to secure a piece of land called the Dales. They tried to rebuild they ancient glory days of Orzammar there but that did not go so well and they were driven out.

 

So now, they call themselves Dalish Dwarves, they are nomads, they are true dwarves and their brand is a mark of honor. Those who do not have them are shamed as and labelled by the Dalish Dwarves as surfacer. 

 

Now replace Orzammar with Arlathan or Elvhenan, replace dwarves with elves, replace brand with Vallaslin and replace surfacer with flat-ear.

Ultimately I think Solas or Fen'Harel is trying to do good. He wanted the Elves, the People to be truly free. That means being free of their slave markings and their so-called gods.

 

I also think that when Fen'Harel awoke from Uthenara, he was weak. Corypheus was probably the only magical being around with enough power to activate the orb. However, Corypheus misused it and lied about his intentions. He probably told Fen'Harel that he wanted to have a world without the Veil, which is something Solas actually want if you remember some of his dialogues.

 

This is obviously my speculation. I would like to hear your' folks thoughts on this.

I'm really doubting that Tevinter was involved at all, as Abelas mentioned that Arlathan was in ruins by the time Tevinter showed up. But I am hoping he wants to help the elves, and if that's the case, I hope I can side with him.

Hm I dunno. Cole may wipe people's memories of him helping them but not the pain itself. Does he do that actually? I know he talks in the Fade about the Fear demon taking people's memories of their fears and how he would never do that.
