Might be kind of a hint to why he broke up with Lavellan? Because she is real and it changed something?

It almost sounds like the Elven Pantheon went into the Crossroads or one of the other places it leads to escape from the collapse of the empire. Solas was asleep (Uthenera?) and reawakened to find his empire and its lore lost to history.

The "You're real" line could be a reference to what the Well of Sorrows does, binding indivuals to the will of Mythal and eventually turning them into mindless servants (which explains why the Vasalin markings represent different gods). Lavellan isn't bound to anyone which means that the other elves could be free of their ancient masters and for some reason this gives Solas joy. This could be why he "frees" a romanced Lavellan.

But what Solas actually is and what it means (possibly the return of the Elven Pantheon) makes that freedom a fleeting thing. The Lavellan that Solas cares about will vanish someday and he's not sure that he can deal with that loss.

I'm really doubting that Tevinter was involved at all, as Abelas mentioned that Arlathan was in ruins by the time Tevinter showed up. But I am hoping he wants to help the elves, and if that's the case, I hope I can side with him.

Hm I dunno. Cole may wipe people's memories of him helping them but not the pain itself. Does he do that actually? I know he talks in the Fade about the Fear demon taking people's memories of their fears and how he would never do that.

During his personal quest if you make him more like a spirit he wipes the memory of the Templar that forgot the actual Cole so that the Templar does not feel anymore pain/guilt about it. It might just be because the spirit himself was choosing to forgive the Templar and that was the only way to help him move on, but after that point It doesn't seem too unlikely he'd make the offer at least. If he were to ask someone if they wanted him to remove the memories and they say yes its a way of helping them with their consent. Cant exactly be upset over something you cant remember and whatnot.  Although perhaps he also doesn't understand the situation enough to make such an offer, or the Templar situation was a one-time thing.

I feel weird thinking of Solas and Lavellan whenever I hear the song "The Hanging Tree".

I'm absolutely baffled about after-the-credits cutscene - tried the reddit, tried the wiki, tried searching the developers' blogs, and there's no clear answer *what* exactly happened here. I guess they've deliberately left it ambiguous.

 

But I think I know now why Solas falls in love with my character:

It's made clear in the second conversation on the balcony, and then in the final scene, if you beg him to stay. I think he believes that the anchor changed you, and more specifically your spirit. He basically said he hasn't seen anything like that since before the time the Dalish "gods" walked the earth. So he implies that the heroine got the spirit of one of them after the anchor. (The funny thing is, I do not care, because we only play her AFTER the possession. And the memory loss naturally makes perfect sense.) And that's further explained in the post-breakup expanded banter with Cole: Cole flat out says that if one spirit of an elven god could find its way back, like the heroine's did, it means that they could bring all of them back, but it's impossible, etc.

 

I still don't know *why* the breakup, if they both got spirits of gods, but I guess we'll know the answer to _that_ when the final-after-the-credits cutscene is deciphered and made clear.

Hm. well the part with "They sleep, masked in a mirror, hiding, hurting and to wake them..."...

What if that is making reference to an Eluvian locked from the outside? They (the elven 'gods') could be trapped in there and he needed the orb to unlock it. It could explain why he was so devastated when the orb was destroyed, and why he would have went into a slumber while having the orb. He may have needed to use a lot of his power to find where this Eluvian is so he could unlock it, but after he discovered the location he did not have enough power left to use the orb. This might also explain the lore accuses Fen'Harel of tricking the gods and locking them into their own worlds. Perhaps he, for one reason or another, sealed them away and could not get them out immediately, or perhaps he had to seal them away for a time and that is why he went into a slumber. 

 

Take for example the golden city. In DA2 Corypheus says the city was already black when they got there. Perhaps it wasn't the throne of the maker but was rather where the elven "gods" resided. Something else could have occurred causing the city to go black and the blights to begin. In the dalish origin for DAO the Eluvian the warden and Tamlen run into is said to be depicting a city of some kind according to what Tamlen saw. Perhaps Solas had to lock away the "gods" in order to prevent them from becoming corrupt as well, not because of him tricking the gods away. Perhaps the events at the time that led to the fall of the elves had to do with this somehow.

 

Plus in the god-baby scene when Flemeth takes the extra soul she seems to be able to call Kieran. Maybe she knew whom the soul belonged to, and her reason for sending Morrigan that blight was to try and save them. Perhaps the person the soul belonged to was the one who killed Mythal and her vengeance was complete in a sense, which is why Solas took her power instead of paying for what happened himself.

 

As for the "you're real" part, maybe there's something trippy about Lavellan that we do not know. I wouldn't put it past Flemeth to be hinting that our character carried one of these old souls, although it is highly unlikely. Or perhaps we reminded him of the elves of old, maybe we have some sort of special spirit (that was his biggest concern with the anchor).

He probably doesn't want to involve her in what he's doing - probably thinks she would think him a monster or something. She has responsibilities with the Inquisition as well, and doesn't want to take her away from it.

 

As for Lavellan possibly holding a an elven god within her...that's fascinating if true. Or, perhaps Solas was confused as to why someone would constantly go out of their way for others.

And now, I just finished the game... in a mad rushed 50-ish hours.

I did not spoil anything for myself beforehand so am trying to sort through a ton of emotions. Feeling happy & confused. Energized but more than a bit bereft. It's strange to feel so crushed even though I had very strong premonition going into the Solas romance it was not going to end happy. I will say that the end was not the blow Anders romance dealt me in DAII.

 

Solas's entire story arc was amazing. Patrick Weekes is an excellent writer and his characters rank among my favourite in all Bioware games, even if they wreak havoc on my emotions.

 

My foremost questions right now would be:

First: Really? Is that really the end of it? Solas said he'd explain when it was all over. That he always had to leave might have been a reason, but it's not an explanation. I have to admit, I expected one last dream/fade conversation at the end before the goodbye. Having played Bioware games now for years, I know they do not "do romance dlc". So, sadly have no expectations there will be any follow-up, no DLC to bridge the gap. At best we may see Solas return as a NPC in the next game

 

Second: We know that Solas was not originally intended to be romanceable. His part in the story predetermined, and therefore his leaving always a part of the arc. I won't deny the romance didn't make for a beautiful story piece but I can't help but wonder why it was decided to be included at all. Particularly, that it was only an option for elven females. I can see that the Elf part probably makes sense, but why only females? Did I miss something along the way that would have made this clearer?

 

 

 

Now, it's time for my second playthrough, which will be a fully complete play with time to enjoy the scenery. While I know a lot of people roll different races, genders,  romances in subsequent plays, I don't know if I could not choose Solas. All things considered.

IMO it reads like to Solas Lavellan is a real person and if he accepts that and goes on to live the life he wants with her then he has to accept her people are real too. That they matter just as much if not more than the long dead Arlathan elves. 

 

And that puts a serious crimp in the Dread Wolf's plan.  

 

Is anyone else or has anyone else kept their vallaslin? To me learning they're slave markings is a blow but it doesn't change their meaning to the dalish now. The tattoos are chosen for what they mean as equally if not more as which Creator they represent. It would be different if the vallaslin were dictated i.e. all crafters have to have June but it's a choice of what that elf sees as important.

Okay, I'm probably wrong, but this line: "You're real, and it means everyone could be real. It changes everything, but it can't." strikes me as... interesting. It could be referring to Solas and others like him - if Fen'Harel is real, then the other elven gods could be real, the Maker could be real, the Old Ones, etc. But with that knowledge, the world would become even more fractious and chaotic than it already is. People can't know the truth. But honestly I don't think this is it...

I think Cole is referring to Lavellan. If she's real - if she's more than Solas's one-dimensional view of the Dalish - then that means he can't just write them off as a bunch of posturing ignoramuses. It means he has to care about them as individuals, like Lavellan, but because of who he is he can't afford to do that. Cole says HE hurts, and then switches to YOU. Solas remembers the past and yearns for it, but Lavellan changes everything. This is my favorite interpretation.

Yeah, the female elf I'm playing now is literally gonna be my only one, hahaha. If I try to roll another, she'll just end up with Solas again because he's an irresistible pajama elf, and then I'll never get around to romancing anyone else.

why would Solas allow himself to be captured and tortured for a whole year? Seeing as how easily he "kills" Flemeth, I could see him just as easily get away from Alexius. Also I just wanted to hug my poor baby. QAQ but yes, sorta confused on why an Elven God would it be like, well... Guess I'll just chill here.

Also I really hope Wolf Hunt is our first story DLC xD

Oh, right that's the choice I made but my game kept crashing during that cutscene so I had to skip through it.
He does start erasing his own memories of Real!Cole though so maybe on his spirit path he would be willing to offer that.

Whew! Where to start? Welp, after my first run in you-know-who-mr-bad-guy and what happened at Haven, I've been really pleased with how much we've seen of Solas!

 

My commentary up to the first romance scene in Skyhold and the little talk after, is as follows.. (haven't played after this point)

Giselle starts singing, Leliana joins in. Typical.

"Are they seriously all singing. Even Cullen? Wtf is happening?"

Solas looks at my Lavellan in the distance. Approaches from behind and is like "a word?"

Queue squeeing and fangirling and hyperventilating. He sounded so sexy when he said it.

"Yes, you can have a word, Solas. And then some!"

They're talking about the elder one and his shiny elven orb. I like when they talk about elfy stuff.

Then there's the beautiful cutscene. Solas' sexy voice in the background. Mmmm!

He's following my quisi up the mountain, like he's escorting her. My headcannon is that the entire trip they've been side by side talking about the fade, spirits, the breach etc

 

"Yay, Skyhold! Okay, now where's Solas?"

I spend about 30 minutes running around getting lost before finding Solas.

"Finally! New dialogue! OMG CUTSCENE!"

"Wait, what? We're back in Haven? Well, okay then."

"Aww he watched me sleep and nursed me. Adorable."

They walk back outside. Solas starts sounding like he's admitting feelings of some sort. Lavellan goes in for the kill.

"AHHHH he went for a second kiss! dsdasdsfr4gdgdf"

"Wake up!?"

Then I almost died because Solas just took her to the freaking fade! And they kissed! In the freaking fade! As she was sleeping! That was so perfect.

 

"Solas better have something to say about this now"

I am having Origin problems too. I couldn't go into Online Mode. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but all that accomplished was destroying everything in my My Games tab.
