I'm planning to do a completionist playthrough next. My big plan was to play as a human and romance Cullen... but I really just want to start another elf and romance Solas again. Anyone else have this "problem?"

*raises hand meekly* I'm forcing myself through a rogue playthrough to experience the other romances right now and am rather put out about it. I keep promising myself that Solas will only be romanced again once we hear news on the DLC front and I can plot my canon playthrough accordingly... But it's HARD.

I was there yesterday, made an elven rogue for Cullen but I couldn't keep myself from flirting with Solas xD

About the final romance scene:

I honestly can't decide if I want to keep the vallaslin or not! The way he interrupts you and says "Stop. You are perfect, just the way you are." is SO good.

I haven't even started my Dalish rogue yet, but my plan was to have her be very pro-Dalish and interested in reclaiming elven history and lore. I know she would react with anger and shock to Solas telling her the true meaning of the vallaslin, but after that wore off, I'm not sure how she would feel about it. Would she want it removed, because it would be bringing her closer to the ancient elves? Or would she cling to the Dalish tradition that she's revered her whole life?

 

For that, think about how she feels regarding the elves of old and the Dalish today:

Then the truth about the Vallaslin would have broken that dream and confidence. On the other hand, did she think that Arlathan was just ruins, worthy to preserve and learn, but nothing more? Then the past origin of the Vallaslin would be a shocking surprise, but just another history fact that doesn't stop the Vallaslin today from having a different meaning for her people. Probably would ask them to be kept.

 

Long story short, there's o "right" reaction. Just try to follow your character's train of thought.

Heh, I know what you mean.  I did a Dalish mage, and now I'm thinking of doing a rogue... probably Dalish because Solas lol.  I peeked at the Cullen romance, and it has plenty of content and is nice and steamy, but he isn't Solas   .  Honestly, I think I found my "Alistair" of Inquisition- I don't want to try the other romances.

Truth be told, there's another way of looking at things, but that's metagaming (although you liking that line best is also metagaming ):

It's been hinted a lot throughout the game that Solas (or better said, Fen'Harel) has caused a lot of pain and strife, not becaus he was evil, but because he wanted to help. A bit like Hawke, really XD He gets approval from stressing that if you fail, you have to keep trying.

 

So that scene can be good for his character development in two ways, depending on the answer:

-If you ask him to take out the vallaslin, he learns that helping can bring good things, even if it's just a little help. Or perhaps because it's a little help. Don't think big, think about the people who are next to you.

-If you ask him not to take out the vallaslin, he learns that sometimes people don't need or want help, and that's good. Accepting others, accepting their own efforts to improve themselves.

 

There's so much that can be said about that scene. I hope Solas remains a presence in future games.

Seriously, I have a feeling we'll have a DLC or an expansion. And though Solas would probably never be a companion again(spoilers!), I'm sure we'll have options to talk to him about that. But I'm afraid it won't be enough, because, well, it's Solas, and it's never enough.

I'm playing through the fade part now, and I was working on translating what was said in Elvish, when I had a couple thoughts.

According to the wiki, the translation comes out vague, and pretty much what was already posted. But.. What if the translation was "Tell me, Dread Wolf."(Harellan translates to being "Dread wolf like" as well as trickster.) "How do you like my gift of nothing?"(With the first part inferred, because "My gift of nothing" doesn't make sense.) "Solas, you appear not to be."

 

The fear demon is taunting him with the fact that he knows Solas's secret. That he is Fen'harel. A fact which no one in the party knows. He is using archaic/difficult Elvish to keep the others from knowing what is said. By his gift of nothing, the fear demon means that he doesn't need to work harder to scare Solas. The most terrifying thing for Solas is being/dying alone. Wouldn't taunting him with the fact that he could spill his secret terrify our poor elf enough? He's afraid he would lose everything he's worked for, including his romance with Lavellan. He's so terrified of her rejection, and the loss of his work that he later leaves her before she can send him away/kill him/punish him in some way for his actions. He has something he has to do. And he's already compromised it by falling for Lavellan. He's made it personal, so his fear of retribution over his actions would be even more intense.

 

It's very clever. Very very clever sitting under our noses all this time.

Sorry for being creepy, Xan is one of my favorite mods for BG2 - even before the happy ending - so I had a bit of a 'SQUEE' moment. I'll stop. *calms self*  

 

Agreed, I really get the feeling he'll never be a companion again as well. Which is all well and good if we at least hear his reasons for what he did and are given the closure needed for the romance, but I won't deny I'm going to miss having him in the party... ):

About the lack of a sex scene... It's sad that some people even care about that, but given they only had limited resources, I'm glad they didn't depict anything. It's not the focus. Doesn't mean it isn't there. I picture Solas taking Lavellan to a ruin intending to fall asleep and walk the Fade together- only he gets distracted, lol.

 

Anyway, Bioware is branching out and being more subtle and varied in the romances. This is a good thing.

 

Incidentally I was pleasantly surprised how much race-specific dialogue there was, and how well integrated it was. This game is polished in the dialogues. I was also really glad there were few times the PC goes off talking without player input.

THIS, I'm 8 hours into a new game, planning on romancing Cullen (as an elf, ugh, grave mistake) and where do I find myself? Standing In Solas' quarters looking at the wall paintings.. and him.. again  I'm a weak, weak person.. Solas, I need yoouuuuu!! Ah screw you Cullen, I'll do you some other time (huehue, sorry..) *runs off to do a super canon completionist playthrough*

So.. after the talk with Blackwall asking Solas if he ever "did it" with spirits, and the theory that someone earlier wrote about him having encountered the spirit of Lavellan before. Wouldn't it be awesome if the only spirit he had "relations" with, was one who looked so much like Lavellan, that she was essentially her? That maybe the question about her spirit changing on the balcony could've been connected to that? Dunno if that's way too crazy, but I like the idea that he may have encountered her before in the Fade a lot.

That what makes this romance super story approved as devs stated. I really start to believe that this how it happend - they were together at some point of time and space. And then something happend to her, her spirit "died" and then was reborn in our Lavellan. *take all my fantears! i have plenty* 

 

Solas says that he didn't encounter any dwarves in the Fade as they can not dream and tied to the stone. (Do all races have to be tied to something in that spiritual way?) but there was no statement on elves xD

You know, looking back at some of the Fen'harel theories is hilarious in hindsight. Stuff like, "Fen'harel caused the blight" or "Fen'harel has been pulling the strings behind the scenes the whole time. Turns out Fen'harel is an adorable nerd.

So we know that Solas is afraid to die alone. We know that he is up to something after the end - he gained essence of Mythal, plus essense of Kieran as it was in Flemeths possession, he was searching for the orb. What for does he need such power? What if his initial plan was to bring back those, whom he loved and thus to rebuild everything? He was weak after awakening so he was looking for someone who can help him to bring spirits of his beloved back, but instead found Cory. He gave him the orb, but Cory went rougue and decided that if that thing can rebuilt ancient Elven Empire, than it can do the same thing for Tevinter. But Cory messed up a bit - and here we have our Inqusitor with the anchor.

 

After sometime he starts to recognize that those whom he loved can be in the world of living. During the first conversation he starts this "you've changed everything". For some time he is happy with what is going on between them, plus there is a Cory to stop. But the thought that his people need help cant jusy escape him mind - he was still looking for the orb. He just could not let it go and be selfish.

 

My guess is that he is not only afraid that Lavellan will reject him once truth is known, but probably that the path that he has chosen is too dangerous for her - there are powers envolved beyond her understanding. Maybe he is not sure if he will survive himself and thus decided to end relationship in order to prevent the pain of loss from both sides in case sonething goes wrong. 

 

And again... he is selfish - he takes all blame on him and let Lavellan be angry with him *___*

The most fun I had combat-wise was when I took Solas, Dorian, my PC mage and Blackwall to the elven temple, and of course you're joined by

I've always loved fighting with other mages. The havoc you create is pretty awesome. It also looks cool when I set Solas and my PC mage to cast Dispel on rift summoning circles- when I unpause they do it simultaneously. I pretend they practiced that. Other couples finish each other's sentences, Lavellas finishes each other's spells.
