So I'm trying to decide between solas and Cullen to romance. Is one more satisfying than the other? There seems to be a lot more dialogue with Cullen. Am aware that solas doesn't have many cut scenes, but is there at least more talking?

I did two saves and played a little more with solas but after the kiss on the balcony at sky hold it doesn't seem like anybody even acknowledges that we're in a romance, let alone solas himself. At least with Iron Bull and Cullen they act like you're together.

any thoughts on how to proceed so i get the most out of this playthrough? Game is right before adamant fortress if that helps.

Okay not your favorite but you seem to like that tragic ending but like I said not everybody wants that type of ending.

Cullen if you want something fluffier.

If you want a more standard romance, go with Cullen. 

 

If you favor more of a plot implication [best way to describe without spoiling], go with Solas.

Now I'm doing a completionist playthrough (which has yet to begin because I'm still stuck in character creation, gah) I like the idea a lot that if you drink from the Well it's one more reason for Solas to kill Flemeth/Mythal, if he can't set you completely free then he'd rather have Lavellan be connected to him through the Well than with Mythal. I let Morrigan drink from it in my first playthrough but now I'm determined to let my Lavellan drink from it this time. Awh, Solas why you gotta be so sweet even if we use our crazy imagination to fill in the gaps..

Even during production it sort of felt like Solas was the "forgotten child"... which is hysterical considering how large a role he actually plays.

 

But he was not seen much (or always last) in marketing and even the tweets focused more around, for example, Iron Bull (who comes off as the "favorite child", IMO) and a lot of the others.

 

Granted, some of that is likely due to him being super spoiler content if you're not careful, but still. It felt that way leading up to the game, and seems to pan out about the same when it comes to in-game cinematics and whatnot. Which, what's there is outstanding. It just seems very little compared to others. Even compared to, say, Cullen... an advisor... who was the other "late" romance addition.

I've actually had the same, I doubt it's a bug. It's the banters you can pipe in on, the first I had was in the prologue when Solas asks about you being dalish. I was still reading the options when it cut me off and he said something along the lines of "Silence, then? Very well."

Reloaded to get the chance to actually reply, but it's made me paranoid about answering quickly in the banter-style conversations.

And I would definitely say the lack of scenes is due to being added in later. I can see why they were a bit more hesitant to put him in a romance role, but I am super happy that they did. Actually, it seems to have been a boon that Cullen and Solas were both added in. I see a fair amount of love for Iron Bull, but not as much for Blackwall.

I don't know if companions recognise the romance when you ask them about Solas (like I know Sera calls Cullen "your cully-wully" if you're romancing him) but I know Cole and Solas have a specific banter after

Nah, I'm hoping that's the case as well and that any deficit will be made up either in future games or DLC. Preferably the DLC, as I rather like the way they're keeping each incarnation of the franchise new with different protagonists each time. I really want an Awakening style expansion though...

Sera does, she says something about imagining that Solas would cry out "Elven Glory!" when he and Lavellan do the do.

gods falling for mortals makes me think of Dionysus and Ariadne... who, incidentally, I named my Lavellan after. Like all myths there are about nine billion versions of it, but the one I heard growing up hits me right in the feeeeels.

Ariadne was a princess of Crete, who fell in love with Athenian prince Theseus who was being sent as a tribute to her kingdom... he's supposed to get his butt sacrificed to the Minotaur, Ariadne's monstrous half-brother, but when Theseus is sent to the Labyrinth where the Minotaur dwells, Ariadne sneaks him a ball of thread (lol Merrill much?) and he's able to kill the beastie and find his way out of the maze without starving to death. He promises to marry her, and on the way back to his kingdom they stop on an island and party all night... aaand Ariadne wakes up in the morning to find Theseus has abandoned her and eloped with her sister. WHAT A DOUCHE.

In her despair, she tries to end her life, crying out to the heavens- after all she did, even though she'd given him her best, she still wasn't good enough for Theseus. "He abandoned me, though I felt moved to save his life. He abandoned me, though I gave him the tools to save his life. He abandoned me, though I sacrificed everything for him. What good am I?" The god Dionysus overheard the mortal woman, and came to her, begging her not to take her own life. "What good am I, who could not keep Theseus?" Ariadne cried, and the god answered: "What good is Theseus? He abandoned you, though it was your compassionate heart that sought to save his life. He abandoned you, though you were clever enough to give him the tools to save his life. He abandoned you, though you sacrificed everything to be with him. What good is Theseus?" Aaaand then they got married and she ascended to godhood and they lived happily ever after in a drunken stupor on Mt. Olympus, as Dionysus is the god of wine and revelry and a bunch of darker things but HEY.

Much more apt to Solas and Lavellan is the myth of Eros and Psyche. Blah blah blah, Eros's mother Aphrodite is jealous of this mortal woman's exceptional beauty, so she tells her son the god of ~love~ to punish her... only, he falls in love with her instead, and there's a whole bunch of prophecy mumbo jumbo about how Psyche's destined to marry a monster, possessed of power against which men and gods are equally helpless. On their wedding night and every night after, the monster insists that she never see him - it's got to be dark, or she's got to be blindfolded. But one night after what I can only assume was some really fantastic lovemaking, Psyche's curiosity gets the better of her and she lifts a lantern to her husband's sleeping face for the first time... wooop, it's a beautiful god with wings. He freaks out because she didn't listen to him about the whole "you're not supposed to see me" thing and takes off.

Anywho and otherwhen, to repent she ends up slaving away for his mom, who makes her do a bunch of impossible tasks... while heavily pregnant (ruuuuude). Eros is very likely helping, because ain't no mortal surviving a bunch of flesh-eating sheep otherwise. Psyche proves that she's a grade A badass by being the only fully mortal and the only woman to go to and from the Underworld... WHILE HEAVILY PREGNANT. What a trooper. Anyway, she proves herself worthy of being the bride of the god of love, Eros learns that if you tell someone not to do something they will definitely do it, and awwww they become Heart & Soul, very precious.

I HAVE NO IDEA WHY I TYPED ALL THAT??! Like. What even was the purpose. I think I had a line of thought somewhere and then I got all excited. Um.

I don't know if Varric always says this when asked what he thinks of Cullen, but in the playthrough where I'm romancing Cullen, Varric says "He's been insufferably smug lately. You might want to tell him to watch his back, I think Leliana might shiv him."

Compared to the other romances? Not much. Sera definitely has stuff to say about your relationship with Solas a couple times, and Cole does near the end of the game also. But other than that I got nothing recognizing us as a couple.

I'm doing the Sera romance now, and basically everyone has an opinion on that lol.

I've just gotten Solas' final romance scene, and I talked to him about it in Skyhold - his "harden your heart" comments are ridiculous for my Lavellan specifically, she's a soft-hearted lil baby, but whatever Solas, whatever. I know there's a banter with Cole, and I know the postcredits scene because I spoiled myself for it but I don't know the actual ending of the game. I do know the final romance scenes though. And I know Solas evidently vanishes during the final mission or something. Dunno how.

 

Now, I know OTHER romances get a scene on the balcony after everything's over. Do Solasmancers get anything from him now in the story? Like, a line at the final battle? A mention? I know there's no more Scenes but please tell me I get at least a line or something.

I just headcanon that Solas is very secretive with his relationship with Lavellan. Sera may be obnoxious, but she notices a lot, so it's no wonder that she would put two and two together, even if it's only for fun.

Soooo I am officially joining Solas fanclub! I've just finished the game with my wonderful dalish archer.
 
Not sure if anyone before mentioned this, but:

Somewhere at the begining of the game I was running around Skyhold and hearing all that crazy stuff that Cole did, so I've decided to ask him not to do that. But what stopped me was that he mumbled something about spirits that were ment to each other but were separated by thousands years. Basically, if you look in what Cole says you can find some refference to those people in Skyhold (like there was something like "There is no other man, he becomes the other man to do the things he can't" is really suits to Blackwall, "She know they are going to kill her, can save only what is important" - Josie?, "He though he killed his father, but he was his father" seems to be Dorian with father is more like "pride"?). I just see those refferences
 
Then there was personal Solas quest where his poor friend died. And after that you have a conversation with Solas in Skyhold, where you can learn that spirits do not actually die, they can come back, but they won't be as you remember them. 
 
So Solas is always making comments regarding the spirit of the Levallan. He even mentions that he hasn't seen such spirit since...? Yeah sure, there is this pause before he finds right words
 
And yeap there is a Cole banter with Solas where you can encourage Cole to speak. "You're real and it means everyone could be real. It changes everything, but it can't".
 
Which combined made me to theorycraft a bit: Solas somehow knew the spirit of our Lavellan in the past. Somehow her spirit returned to the world of living. And in this case his "But losing you..." seems to fit so nice.
 
I know this might be just my wishful thinking, but I like this idea.I need some more investigation on the matter though.

Someone should work on making this a fanfic! I love this theory maybe that's why his racegating makes super story sense.
