Okay, I just finished the Temple of Mythal and spoke to Solas.

After that conversation, I was in shock and so I looked up whether I did something wrong and whether I can salvage the relationship.  I can't finish the game.  I am SO pissed off right now  -- never did I think they'd pull another Alistair.  Yes, I know the story and how it relates, but give us something!  Bah.  I sure hope the Cullen romance is better.  And no, I don't want to be spoiled about that unless it's going to make me fly into another rage.

Oh good.  Oh, that puts my heart at peace.  At least this means I can put this playthrough on a shelf and revisit it in a few years when the final DLC has been released.

While I could have done with more scenes yes, I think the romance was beautifully written - deep and tragic, bittersweet, an excellent insight into Solas's state of mind, motivations, past, agenda, etc. A god falls in love with a mortal, it's like something out of myths in our world... The depth of emotion contained in it outshines that in a good few of the other romances, and it's tied to the main plot and huge events in the world of Thedas in a way that no other romance in the game is. Some of the other romances feel incidental in that regard - mostly just fluff or jokes. I honestly feel like I picked the most meaningful romance in the game. I was amazed that an ancient being fell so deeply in love with the character I was playing, despite their differences.

 

I don't think it's comparable to the Alistair romance (especially since that has options for a fairly happy ending - you don't have to make him King after all). It's more like the Morrigan romance, where she leaves the Warden to pursue her own agenda no matter what, even though she loves him deeply. And as we know, the Morrigan romance got its closure in the form of the Witch Hunt DLC - which obviously didn't come out immediately. I'd save your anger for now, we don't know what the future holds in terms of Solas/Lavellan in DLCs, expansions, future games, etc. If it gets treated the way Thane's did - that would be the time for anger I think. As it is we're in the same situation as Morriganmancers were post DA:O pre WH.

I guess I'm also really pissed that I got two kissing scenes and that's it.  I was hoping for more because the way BioWare has been going on about the mature ratings.  Yes, I guess I'm shallow that way.  Poor Lavellan.  He strings her along with two makeout sessions, tells her he loves her, takes away her Valaslin and then dumps her like a hot brick.  Worst blue balls ever.

I'm hopeful a DLC will have a happy ending for us. That's what I'm telling myself so I won't be upset. When it comes to pass it will be worth it.

Break Her Heart To Save Her: He breaks up with the Inquisitor at the end of their romance. The reason for this is not their unequal pairing as a god and a mortal, but rather the fact that part of his purpose is freeing mortals from the dominion of gods of any kind. Staying in a relationship with the Inquisitor would bind her to him, robbing her of her freedom, and he sees her freedom as the greatest gift he can give her. Even if this means he loses her forever.

I...had not heard that interpretation before. I'm just gonna go...curl up and cry now.   But in a good way.

And it makes sense. He values freedom over everything, and he probably thinks that staying with the inquisitor will a] put her in danger, and b] tie her to a lonely, painful path that she doesn't even know about. He feels like he's made his bed and has to sleep in it, but that doesn't mean that he has to drag her down with him.

 

Ya, I had thought of that before.

He exiled his god buddies because they used mortals as slaves and playthings, he couldn't now use a mortal as a plaything, no matter how much he loved her. She deserved the chance to be free. (But she don't wanna you dork!!!!)

Seriously, how can Lavellan possibly be free after meeting him ?

Honestly? I'm sticking to my theory that they have a tear jar somewhere in their offices where they place a quarter every time they come across the anguished cries of one of their fans. The more money, the better the inevitable potluck will be.

Three, plus a nice scene if you take him to Halamshiral. The kiss scenes are beautiful - they're among the most passionate kisses in the game tbh. 

 

Intimacy between the two is implied with various dialogue options from both Solas and other characters such as Sera and the bartender. I guess I'm someone that doesn't need to see a sex scene play out on screen to enjoy a romance or see a romance as mature - but more than that I think there's a good reason they didn't include one and left some room for interpretation. Given his true nature it would be fair to feel deceived by him - feeling deceived + sex doesn't really go well together. I can see some people complaining in that scenario.

Yeah I'm pretty sure Gaider at least was snickering in his dark cave of evil at the thought of Alistair fan girls having to choose between Hawke and Alistair to leave behind in the Fade.

 

... but I will never regret romancing Solas. I love the feelings it's stirred up in me.

If only I could get myself to not romance Solas on every PT

 

I am managing barely to get to Skyhold with  my Cullen PT by refusing to speak with Solas. His "yes friend" replies to me, without the passion he has for a LI Lavellan cut too deep .. sobs uncontrollably...

Aww, don't feel so cheated by his romance...

He does not string her along with make out sessions. Not in the slightest. The first kiss is started by Lavellan and he eventually breaks it and says "It isn't right, not even here.". The balcony scene starts with him trying to walk away and he even tells Lavellan that not pursuing him any longer would be "Kinder in the long run.". That guy tries his hardest to stay away from her, but he fails because of her countless attempts to dig deeper and understand him.

Wait, I never got that.  The only personal quest I ever got was to save the spirit.  Now I'm feeling like I missed a whole heck of a lot of Solas and I wonder why.    Is it because I hate Super Mario Shards?
