Sorry I don't. I usually don't record my games anyway and I wouldn't know how to find the banter in the game files. =( I wonder what else is out there that we might have missed.

I actually agree with you. I can see this from how my last relationship went which is in some ways similar to the Solas romance. Intelligent, mysterious, and guarded men make women want them, but don't make for healthy relationships that rely on trust and open communication.

Yes, you're absolutely right.  I just don't do well at all with tragedy that looks far too much like what I've experienced in real life.

 

Which is definitely a huge compliment to the creators of this game, but I just don't do well at all.

 

The fact that I had no choice in the matter except not to partake at all did not make me happy either.

im probably going to mostly lurk most of the night though. I'm still pretty damn terrified of it  being up there. I've been all weird about sharing my art since an... 'Incident' with a (now) ex-boyfriend a while back. Writing not as much because I had a lot more support from friends for it, but drawing has always been a private thing, for example one of my teachers in school opened my sketchbook and I grabbed it from her hands and ran away, so having a bad incident with it from someone i cared about was a lot more.. jarring.

Understandable. *hugs tight* I think I can speak with certainty though that a lot of us loved your sketch. You're in safe company here, but I totally get being afraid.

 

On the topic of Solas.

I actually do feel that Solas is capable of manipulation, even outright deceit if the purpose suits him. His expressions when leading the Inquisitor to Skyhold and when speaking of the orb, hell the very fact he doesn't tell you that the orb is his, shows that he's capable of it or can be interpreted as such. Personally that's why I think he has to tell you that what you had was real, that why he had to break up with you, because he genuinely didn't want to keep lying to you anymore or drag you further into what he feels is his stalwart duty going forward. Quiet bookworm. Lovable dork. Manipulative wolf. Cunning storyteller. Solas is all of these and more, which is precisely why I enjoy his character and arc so much. There isn't just one way to interpret him, and I LOVE that.

I think Solas will be popular in fics, so at least there's that. The number of kinkmeme prompts featuring him. That looks like an unfinished sentence, but I really don't know what else to say.

So no joke, I've been lurking this thread since probably late July I flipped out when I saw someone post this and decided that it was finally time to de-lurk myself!

 

I just want to say how much I have appreciated this thread and all of the people that have contributed over the months to Solas speculation/discussion.  Particularly after release and in trying to dissect and deal with the bittersweet heartbreak   You guys are so awesome and it was SO wonderful to be able to come to this thread and commiserate/gush with everyone (even though I was lurking, lol)!  It really is a support thread! xD

 Relationships in my past have deeply hurt me in unfathomable ways. What I viewed Solas as was someone who would likely hurt me, but not intentionally. Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened etc etc. Then again, my past mistakes erupted into violence, not just someone who wasn't in it for the long run. I'll always take someone who should know better, like Solas, over someone who has more in common with Coryphefish. 

 

  I didn't like that we didn't have a choice or an option to change things. While this leaves the potential for some amazing DLC later on and the possibility for the relationship to be one that goes down in legend, it did feel a bit trite to have several ideas on how to fix things and flat out not have the option to pursue any of them.

In particular, it was extremely out of character for me to watch my Inquisitor simply walk away from Solas after the battle of Corypheus. I would have stayed by his side. 100%. He wouldn't have had a chance to run just yet. It cheapened the ending for me.

He is Fen'Harel, the cunning Lord of Tricksters. He lied the entire game and held a false identity with ease, no question he's a master manipulator.

 

However.

 

I definitely think he had feelings for Levallan, if romanced. I don't think he is at a sociopathic level of manipulation, haha. He has true emotions, I believe. Possibly very deep ones. His life is simply... well, complicated to put things lightly. 

 

Does that mean all is forgiven? No. No no no. In fact if they meet again, I would love the option to tear him a new one, but I do not think he is "evil" with his manipulations. At least from what we know.

I'm actually doing another playthrough where she takes him at face value. I'm also looking for things I might have missed. I'm excited to see how this plays out.

It would have been nice to have a chance to change things but we have to give BioWare a chance to tell the story they want to tell and respect Solas's own character agency. If he wanted to walk away, that's that. It'd be weird to force him to stay if he truly believes he's better off leaving. I hope he eventually wants to stay because he believes he can, not because I begged him to and he gave in or because I refused to let him go.

 

I just hope whatever the story they have planned out doesn't end in tragedy. So many tragic romances, so little time.  It'd be nice for the difficult romance to actually end happily, since that almost never happens. Though with what Solas is, that might be very hard to pull off.

 

I'm in the camp of he's not just a manipulator. I don't think they'd present us with a whole character that turns out to be a complete lie. Though I wouldn't be surprised to find Solas become a sympathetic villain. That seems to be the road they're leading to! Not sure yet how I feel about that, if it's the case.

omg I'm avoiding making manual saves, as I've heard it's a potential fix for the infamous banter bug, and I'm getting so much banter right now wandering the Hinterlands with Varric/Solas/Cassandra. It's bittersweet. I got none of this last playthrough, so it's like "woo more Solas characterization!" but also "not getting it during my romance playthrough".

I think that, if romanced, the romance is an unfortunate complication of his plans. If you tell him to say he hates you, he refuses to even say he doesn't care about you. This is intriguing, given the things he is okay with lying about. My life experiences and assumptions, were I to believe he was cold and manipulative through the end, would expect him to willingly say anything to make leaving the inquisitor easier. For reasons I hope we come to be aware of soon, he can't bear to tell her about himself, but he also loves and respects her too much to trick her into believing he doesn't care. 

 

 

 I've been in a similar situation in the past--genuinely having feelings for someone but knowing that my life circumstances would not be good for them, and being too impulsive to stop the relationship from forming in the first place. Perhaps this is why I'm not as eager to tell him off as so many others are. He just better have a damn good explanation for the inquisitor whenever we do get closure.

Agreed.  I definitely don't think we should just wholesale toss out all the old legends.  The truth is most likely somewhere in the middle.

Thats the thing. You get approval from asking him questions. So its tempting to go back to him for his opinions. To listen to his Fade stories. 

 

Its just so easy to fall for him. And im not even tallking romance here. Im saying that theres incentive to create the relationship, even for Inquisitors who dont really care for him all that much.
