I meant at the end, not at the beginning.  At the end, Lavellan is taken to a nice romantic place, given a very romantic gift, and then dumped without a second word.

I can't imagine anyone just brushing it off with a shrug and a "whatever", and I don't really consider that a choice.

I mean at the end too. One of the choices is responding with an "Alright, if you say so." I might be remembering wrong, though. It's all about how you roleplay your character. Considering you don't know each other for that long, you can easily have a character who really wasn't as into it as Solas was.

Isn't there an option to basically mutually break up? I thought one of the choices was pretty much "yeah okay. If you really feel that way". You don't have to roleplay the scene with hard feelings.

I saw that more as resignation than a mutual break-up. To me, a mutual break-up happens when both parties agree that there is a reason to end the relationship. With the option you're talking about, I think it's more "I respect your right to leave" or "I can't do anything about it," considering Lavellan was happily participating in kissing earlier. He doesn't explain his motivations very well, so I don't think she can come to the honest conclusion that breaking up is for the best, but she knows she can't do anything about it so she just accepts it anyway.

I understand and accept that.

It's the lack of trust and communication that should have been there that is missing.  To me that does not say love, for those of us who are playing girls who are really into him.

But maybe we really will get something in the next installment, whatever it is.  Maybe he did intend to come back and tell her all about it, but then the thing with Flemeth happened and that knocked him for a loop and he got scared and bolted.

:o  That is amazing! I saw the original lineart and it looks even better coloured! That glow is so lovely. There's this wonderful mythological feel to it. Wonderful job!

Hahahaha. Agreed. I love how Bioware handled Fen'harel. From the very first time I perused the codex entry I was intrigued by him. I love mythology, and tricksters usually get the most interesting stories. And for years people have been speculating that Fen'harel's the big bad. Or the Maker. Or the cause of the blight. Because it seemed so obvious that he was a Loki analogy. But...nope. Turns out we were all wrong. Fen'harel is a grumpy nerd with a sweet tooth. The irony is delicious.

You know, I am rather partial to the idea that the story of the fall of Arlathan was one big unintended consequence after another. Though I do think that Solas locked them away for a reason. A good reason, too, if you believe what Cole says. It also contributes to another possible reason why he leaves you. If he believes that basically everything wrong with the world is the result of one f*ckup after another on his part, then he probably wants to push Lavellan away before he screws that up too.

I also like contrast between him and Cory. Both of them powerful, godlike beings. Both of them backing factions that seek to control Thedas. But one of them tries to make the world submit to his will while the other just wants to correct his mistakes.

And I don't mind that we couldn't prevent the breakup, because that was Solas's decision, and it really had nothing to do with anything Lavellan did or didn't do. I will mind, however, if we don't have the option of tracking the bastard down, because that is totally what my Lavellan would do next.

Yup my thoughts exactly. He doesn't believe in himself to not be despised by mortals since in all his very long life every time he tried to do good he was misinterpreted. And having Lavellan treating him like he is the evil Dalish Dread Wolf will break his heart so he pushes her away because he doesn't like himself enough to think she could accept him after all he has messed up. He would rather have her mad and hurt at him for something he did than for something that got misinterpreted and distorted based on all the Fen'Harel baggage.

He should have trusted her more.

To be honest, we all had plenty of warning, He walks away both times saying this can't work.

So what's the point of putting it in the game at all?  For masochists?

Hmm...maybe I'll go back to my save right before the final battle and see if I can track down all of the orbs and get that third quest. Though I wonder if there would be a benefit to doing that before the final romance scene as opposed to after...I'd have to go back even further to get that....

I'm really curious about this scene now. I'm wondering if maybe the reason they didn't put markers on the map for this quest is cos if everyone saw this quest, the ending wouldn't be as much of a surprise? I dunno. It kind of irked me that everyone else's "find stuff in the world" had map locations, except his.

In other news, I'm progressing in my psychotically-devout-andrastian playthrough, and I've already gotten so much disapproval from Solas. I hope he has some good "I hate your guts" scenes.

Anders said that too.

Apparently Hawke and Lavellan should get together and compare notes.

Because it's a powerful plotline that obviously many of us have thoroughly enjoyed? It expands on his character and has a large emotional impact.

Even angst I'd romance Solas out of everyone.  I have a weakness for the male elves.

And he was not originally a LI, in the extra year of development they decided to add him in.  His story was always gonna be tragic.

I honestly think it might have been to humanize him. He really doesn't have much content compared to some of the other companions, and for how big of a reveal we get at the end it's very - very - easy for people to see him in shades of black and white rather than grey. I think the romance, while tragic, was mean to show that regardless of how you interpret him - for better or ill / harmless or horrible manipulator - he's more complex than initially led to believe.

I guess I'm not really seeing how it fits into a game series that prides itself on player choice.

At least Morrigan told you what's what before she left and we always knew that the Warden would somehow find her due to the ring she gave him.

Well what do you classify as a "win"? I think it's a pretty powerful story. And, provided we get a bit of expansion on it, has the potential to be one of the best romances Bioware has ever done. It's already way up there simply because of the passion and emotional resonance the romance has.

I mean, there was no way to make Morrigan stay, either. There was no way to make an unhardened Alistair not dump you if you weren't a Cousland.

Ah but that would remove the shock-value for first time players (especially the extremely oblivious ones) of the post-epilogue scene.

Wait I'm confused. Where does player choice come into this???  Because the romance ended in angst, it shouldn't be in the game.   :? Not everything needs a happy ending.

And no way to prevent a certain mage from blowing up the Chantry. Though at least you get the chance to refuse to be an accomplice.

No, but as I said, Morrigan left respectfully and he had her ring.

As far as Alistair goes, you could always reload and make different choices.
