I just started a new female Lavellan playthrough and am interested in romancing Solas(epilogue reasons :P). But, then I'm also interested in Cullen since he really has a deep storyline. What would you tell me to persuade me to continue with Solas?

Romance both! Three playthroughs!

Or, romance Solas first. Then, save before his final scene. Play through it to see how it unfolds. Reload, break up with him first, romance Cullen.

It's tragic but beautifully written.

So, remember Solas' first quest? When I went for the very first time and saw another Dalish female mage there, my first thought was to tell her to sod off. Which I did. Loudly. And guess what she said? "May the Dread Wolf take you!"

When people say Solas is manipulative, are talking about the romantic relationship or in general?

As far as the romantic relationship, I have to disagree. I don't see any manipulation. He doesn't explain why, but he does express that things will be easier for them both if they don't indulge their feelings. It seems to be an inner struggle between Solas wanting to be loved, but not wanting a relationship to complicate his big mission. Which of course, makes the romance all the more sensual and emotional. Wanting what you shouldn't have. Poor Lavallen :)

...How is he manipulative? I just don't see it.

When you do not give someone all the information they need to make a truly informed choice, and then by your actions breadcrumb them into a certain path, that is manipulation -- saying one thing and doing another.  Mind, you, this does not have to be done maliciously in order to be morally lacking.

Cullen was my first and I recommend the romance as it is sweet, satisfying, and everything I hoped it would be.

I'm romancing Solas now for science.

I say do them both. I now have two canon playthroughs. I've never done that before. I play for fun or whatever but usually have that one pt that is how the story truly happened for me. But I can no longer choose between Solas and Cullen.

This reminds me that I could never choose between Casavir and Bishop, and so I always kept one "good" and one "evil" save, even though the Bishop "romance" went nowhere.  I saw shades of that with Solas, and that enraged me.  Lead me on and then drop me off a cliff, devs, I hate that.

But I think it is simply a temporary cliffhanger, unlike Bishop.

Mmmmm, Bishop. He was an evil dickhead, but in a good way. As in... I wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole IRL but in fiction? Hell yeah.

I meant more in a general sense.

I think it is very much a debatable issue depending on how you see it (so really we may all be correct).

I see Solas as having tried to manipulate Cory and the Orb for his own ends, whatever they may be. That failed, so he uses suggestion and subtle nudges and guides to do all he can to get the Orb back through the inquisition. It is in his own best interest to see to it that the inquisition succeeds because that falls in with what he (allegedly) wants.

Defeating the big evil who threatens to swallow the world? Just an enjoyable side benefit. His end goal is to get back that orb.

But clearly arguments can be made to the opposite. I think they left it open to interpretation for now- and we can all view the character differently depending on how he fits into our own personal stories.

That's really the best thing, too. Those subtle nuances that make him come to life- the morally grey areas that let us make this world other people created our own.

LOL yeah  DANGER WILL ROBINSON  It was okay because you knew that it was going to be all bad so you could put up that wall of separation between your character and yourself.

With Solas the spidey senses never kicked in and I was blindsided and ow ow ow.  Maybe because I still have a lot to learn about fixing the ol' man-picker in real life.

I've never played an RPG two times if I feel a connection with my first/canon. This time I just had to make a Lavallan, despite already having a Cass-romanced Adaar which I adore. Inquisition just does it right, everything imo

I'm doing Bull now. Cullen was good. Dorian was adorable, a bit on the short side as you can get all his romance scenes in a few hours if you try. I'm gonna pass on Solas and Blackwall I think. Despite my love for them.  I've had enough tragedy in my Bioware games to last a lifetime. (Looking at you Thane. Looking at you.)

Honestly, I blame the Fade tongue. Who has time for "it would be kinder in the long run..." and "impulsive and ill-considered" when you've got a hot apostate shoving his tongue down your throat? :P

Alright thanks for the explanations. I was just curious.

And actually, I'm still only 45 hours in and have only completed the first two romantic scenes and his bff spirit of wisdom quest.

The fact that they made these scenes so darn sweet is what's going to make the end so darn painful!

Oh god... Bishop... That sexy, sexy, frustratingly evil man... Ugh, my chaotic good Bard was so in love with him until she fell hard for Gann. Oh, Gann... I love Bishop for his "what might have been" qualities more than as a genuine romance, but that's mostly because his romance wasn't finished.

Spoiler

I did the Cullen romance first and I liked it. It's nice, soft, and leaves me with all kind of squishy feelings. I'm enjoying the Solas romance for it's squishyness and it's sadness, but also because it feels very on point. From that perspective, Solas may end up being my canon. :D It'll be interesting to see what they do with him. Hopefully, it's not the end and we'll get some DLC expanding on the content a little.

I can't for the life of me see that breadcrumbs you into a certain path?

He tells you as much as he can without freaking you out. He never stoppes you or foil your plans, the way I see it he tries to provide as much information as possible to let you make more informed choices.

It might be far more about what he cannot handle than about what you cannot handle.

No if he wasn't who he is, no. If he was a normal guy with a secret like the others I would wholeheartedly argree with you. And what hexomega said.
