It's possible that his own words prompt his decision.

I'm curious, does a mage Lavellan get any different dialogue than a non-mage one?  I took the arcane perk and got the additional dialogue at the Well, but is there anything different for mages?

Just wondering if there is anything to support my theory that the Creators are elves who were/are willingly possessed, and being a mage makes it easier.  I'm wondering if being a mage may make a difference for Lavellan in the future.

You keep talking while I sleep, I'm always late to the party, but I'll chime in anyway. I don't think he is a manipulative person at all. I even take a little personal affront, *chuckle* I'm emotionally unavailable but that does not make me not tempted or not have genuine strong feelings for someone, it's just that circumstances makes relationships impossible. If anyone has circumstances, it's Solas. It's not stringing along, it's "I really love you and I want this to work but I know it can't, but the I love you-part won't go away".

 

And for the lack of explanations, he didn't expect

the orb to break (brake?), he is absolutely devastated and that is when he decides to leave, me thinks. If the orb had stayed whole, I think he would have stayed and explained

 

I got some background chatter after arriving in Skyhold, in the main hall "she is committed to independence I hear - shame" and after the third scene, speculation about a coming wedding. I found that a little weird, are they referring to the romance or someone else?

I dated a guy with depression and sometimes he needed to be alone. Even though I wanted him "available" and being lovey dovey, is just not who he was. But I know he loved me to bits. Found that out only years after  we broke up though.  At the time I was just as confused as Lavellan!

 

I guess that is one of the resons I am enjoying Solas so much. This time instead of abandoning the introverted, emotionally unavailable guy, I can see the romance go "all the way" from the safety of my keyboard and having a Cullenmance save in standby so I won't suffer 

 

And ya Jacob romance sucked as did Thane's romance in ME3. UGH

I think he realises in that moment that she really isn't free when she is involved with him without knowing who and what he is. And the truth really isn't something he can tell her at that point. Which makes his earlier statement about her deserving the truth hypocritical.

Im pretty happy of all we managed to put together about Solas in this thread and other good ones about Fen'Harel and the Elhven Gods.

 

It is mostly speculation on codex entries  + Cole dialogue interpretation but it brushes the most interesting portrait of events for me since i got into the DA universe ( i enjoyed discovering the whole darkspawns + archdemon background in DAO but nothing compares to this idea of a rebellious god bringing forward the Veil to end a war and then awakening just to miss the way things were before).

 

 

Now im awfully sad that my Lavellan doesnt know as much as I do as the player. I have to remind myself that she cant be like 'Thats alright, he's got goddly things to do. Thats a fine reason for moving on from what we shared'. Arrrg! So hard to distance things right now.

 

And here's a question:

 

In the romace scene, it all starts with Solas telling Lavellan he wanted to show her what their relationship meant to him. Oh and then it ended up with the breakup, with you either letting him change you (removing the vallaslin with his godly powers) or clinging to what you are (because the tattoos are what tie together the Dalish, whatever the meaning of them was originally).

 

So do you think Solas knew he was about to end things? What made up his mind?

I think I've said this before but no...I don't think he meant to end things. If you break up with him before the Vallaslin part, he looks incredibly hurt and crestfallen; if he'd always been intending to break it off he probably would have look relieved. My interpretation is that he really wants to tell her everything - that pause between "the truth" and "your face" is a bit awkward for his normal cadence, as if he's not sure what he is going to say or how he's going to say it. I might be reading too much into it, but I think maybe the Vallaslin conversation is a mini-test to see what happens when he reveals a negative aspect of the Dalish. He doesn't really care about the marks themselves, but he does care if Lavellan will reject him out of hand when he brings it up (she can yell at him, but unless I am not remembering properly, she cannot walk away or really scorn him), as the Dalish did when he tried to tell them what they were getting wrong.

 

Plus nothing leading up to the breakup hints that anything has changed. I think you can see the exact moment he realizes what he (believes he) has to do when his expression changes after the kiss. It's very abrupt and his excuse - that he is distracting the inquisitor - is a really poor one. My inquisitor led a druffalo through the Hinterlands and no one ever commented on how irrelevant that was to the cause. He's been in the fade and potentially lived for centuries; he has to know that recent heartbreak doesn't lead to an abundance of focus. So I think he has some sort of internal revelation and thinks "**** I have to end this what do I say so she doesn't think it's her fault or get suspicious or ask questions."

 

I don't think he's good at manipulating his personal relationships, and I don't think he wants to be (except perhaps post-Mythal). Him saying "getting you into bed is an enjoyable side benefit" while knowing full-well he's going to break up with her doesn't seem like something he would do. I don't even think he'd offer to remove her Vallaslin knowing he's going to break-up with her, because I'm sure even as dense as he can be, he'd see how easily she could misconstrue his intentions with that gesture.

 

Who knows how he feels now though.

Interesting bit of info with solas and cole banter. Part of it seems to be about what he did to the other gods and how they are sleeping. Something he regrets now

I enjoyed Solas's romance. Loved it, even. Not out of a desire to go through angst, but because I was completely compelled by both characters. Solas's romance might not end the way people want it to, but in that short time we are given one of the better love stories that bioware has written. There's a lot of emotion on screen. A lot of emotion that you typically don't get from a story told by CGI puppets. 

 

Escapism comes in a lot of forms. Some people are just looking to have an open and shut romance. Meet, fall in love, get married. Generally that's the sort of romance we look for in real life. In real life, the narrative isn't being shaped by an author's hand. You can't look back in time and think, 'Well, my boyfriend was totally foreshadowing having some sort of deep regret in the second act. I should stick around!'

 

In a narrative, looking back is perfectly valid. What you are watching or reading has been crafted with [hopefully] the intention of having a logical conclusion. Bioware has made its share of mistakes in the past with romances, but all signs point to Solas being a story they want to continue. And for better or worse, his romance with Lavellan has a purpose in the grand scheme of things. Maybe it will be that much easier to convince him not to do whatever he is planning. Maybe it will be what saves him. Maybe it will be what kills him.

 

Or perhaps it was just a brief glimpse into a person that feared being alone and wanted to reach out to someone. All of this is escapism. We want to think that we can save a character, or that our actions have a deep impact on someone's life. 

 

To me, the narrative potential of Solas's romance far exceeds the others. Like Morrigan's, it favors a certain sort of ambiguity. If you don't like ambiguity, there's Cullen or Iron Bull. That is the choice you are given as a player.

But what do you think he sees after Lavellan either accepts or refuses his offer. Could that be what changes him? The perspective that she would either accept him changing her because *godhood* or that she would cling to what she is now, because she cares about her people more then those of a thousand years ago. 

 

Could that be what frightened him, that they cant be on equal footing, that she cant understand ? 

 

(Well right now at least, if she could get some info, she could eventually put things into perspective and accept it instead of be emotionnaly destroyed by it)

Wow, I completely forgot about him saying that getting Lavellan into bed was an enjoyable side benefit. If they already have been having sex regularly, this break up is even worse omg. At first I thought they were going to have sex for the first time and he freaked out because it became too real for him. I guess it makes more sense that he was going to reveal that he was Fen'Harel, but chickened out at the last second. I wish he had more trust in the Inquisitor to be able to handle it considering how long they have known each other.

I'm very glad he was added, because never minding the romance aspect itself it just adds so much to the game to have that level of connection with him. I just hope it won't be a disappointing resolution. There may be no godly happily ever after here, but... there should be something satisfying. Somehow.

 

These are the things I wish I could ask his writer, but there's just no coherent way to fit that into 140 characters.

Well don't you become his servant if you drank the well and if he absorbed Mythal? I would really like an expansion/dlc of Lavellan being able to figure out where he is because of Mythal. Also, since they have both used the anchor at some point, maybe there is a link there too. There must be way to track him down because of these two things.

Cullen was my first and I recommend the romance as it is sweet, satisfying, and everything I hoped it would be.

I'm romancing Solas now for science.

I say do them both. I now have two canon playthroughs. I've never done that before. I play for fun or whatever but usually have that one pt that is how the story truly happened for me. But I can no longer choose between Solas and Cullen.

Tehehe same here, I never even intended to romance my egg headed elf GOD but he sneaks up on you. even after the tears I only want to romance him, had to push myself into doing a Cullenmance

I don't think people have to worry that much about there not being followup. I don't tend to bet on things when it comes to DLC/Expansions, but I feel fairly assured in saying that Solas matters. They wouldn't have included the final stinger if they had no intention on following up on it. You don't drop a huge reveal like that, and then brush it aside and go: "...but enough of that!"

 

Then there's also the fact that you are trapped in Solas-romance once you go through the break up with him. That sounds like it shouldn't be possible. But the only way they would program it like that is to save themselves the work of needing to write three dialogue chains for Solas in future content.

I think had that been the case he would have come to the realization right after he removes them, not after they're kissing and what-not. Wild Speculation: I think if they'd had sex before, it wasn't necessarily emotionally intimate. After removing the Vallaslin or at least talking about it, he's starting to reveal more of himself and - maybe more importantly - he sees her in a very vulnerable way. The reason that scene is so heartbreaking to me is because it seems like it would have been the launching point for a relationship where he could really be honest with her about himself and his past. He opens up, tells her something that could hurt her and potentially fixes it; it's only natural to assume she'd want to do the same but he can't let that happen for a number of reasons (the biggest being IMO that he doesn't believe he deserves to have that pain healed).

 

But he might very well be backing away in part because he doesn't want to change her as well. I don't think he holds it against her that she keeps the Vallaslin though (if she makes that choice). His opinions on the Dalish seem to soften through the romance, and even though he's a bit thick I'm sure he can appreciate her explanation; she doesn't really tell him he's wrong, she accepts the new information and says that the meaning has changed.

 

There are just so many layers to what he could be feeling and why he breaks it off - that's why his character is so good!

Iron Bull, who doesn't seem to be a very serious partner, and "Blackwall" who sleeps with Quizzie and then gets arrested because surprise he's not who he says he is. Those would not have been satisfying romances at all for me. Even if they don't resolve it, I know what Lavellan x Solas had was real (as he says). Though really, they're going to have to resolve it right? Right?!

I do wish he had told her, but I understand why he decided not to tell her right then. It probably would have distracted her from Coryphefish to learn that "oh btw you're banging a god your people believe is responsible for the loss of all that is good in the world." Probably more distracting than him just breaking it off. So I can appreciate his decision in that moment. But later? When he leaves without saying anything or making any explanation? I think he's being selfish there. He could tell her who he is and leave all the same, but I think he wants to protect himself from the negative reaction he thinks he'd get. He'd rather she be confused/angry that he broke it off than be confused/angry that he lied to her for months about his identity.

Nah, doesn't make good business sense. They need to capitalize on the success of DA:I while it is still relevant. For both DA:O and DA:2 they released significant DLC in the first four to six months. They're probably going to get GOTY and they'll want to have a few big DLC missions/expansions to tack onto whatever GOTY edition they put out as well. There's no reason for them not to use the Inquisitor for those future DLCs.

 

Take comfort in capitalism - it's one of the few times it works in our favor!

I am inclined to agree with the capitalism aspect. Including a stinger is practically waving the promise of DLC in front of the user, and saying: "Don't sell your game, there's more coming!"
