It's interesting the RandomEncounterz post mentions Nora Roberts, since I read on the BW blog that both the Weekes' are big fans of hers. There's a hopeful bit for team optimism- PW likes a writer who's known for her romance novels.

Anyway, it's a thoughtful post so I can't dismiss it outright. I'll have to think more about why it's such a strange read, though. Iron Bull's romance arc seems like nothing to me. Very disappointing, considering I would have done Sten faster than it took him to say "I don't think this is appropriate, kadaan." Obviously there are different personalities and expectations at work here. Possibly because I'm pretty sapiosexual, so a lot of those Fade nerdy conversations felt romantic even if they weren't. PW did say that these characters will appeal to different kinds of people, so thus far it looks to me like he succeeded pretty well, if someone else finds IB's story line that satisfying.

About the no sex scene, I think Bioware was being careful of people feeling manipulated and therefore squicked, as some complain about the Blackwall romance. They probably also wanted to give something to asexual players, and Josephine and Solas were that representation. Whatever. To me Solas' romance is passionate that I don't even see how you can interpret it as not being physical, but I leave people to their own headcanon.

As for needing to see Solas go through more progression in order for the romance to feel real- I kind of think the opposite would happen for me. The fact that he's willing to GIVE IT ALL UP, the thing that has motivated him for untold years and which changed the whole world, is already almost to the point of breaking credibility. The fact that he'll trust the Inquisitor AT ALL is so huge for this character that comparing him to the other romance arcs is misleading. The needs of characterization and his role in the story outweigh the wish for fangirl moments, and that's as it should be, in my book.

I suppose I should finally buy that last Dark Magick book by Nora Roberts. Interesting he should be a fan, she definitely runs the gamut on romance though I haven't read that many.

My friend did a dwarven Blackwall romance and she did.not.like. Squicked with a capital S. So much in fact that hearing her describe it from her point of view also made me uncomfortable about pursuing a romance with him even though it's unlikely I personally would have been so grossed out about it as she was.

She also was unnerved by Josie and Blackwall and I didn't feel that was weird at all. Everyone experiences these stories differently, I guess.

Reading another post on that site... this person seems to think that a lot of Solas content got cut and is going to be added back in patches. I'm not sure where they get that impression. Does he really get that much less than other companions? I've only done Blackwall's romance up through the end of his personal quest, but it didn't seem like tons more. In fact there's a notable dead zone after his personal quest that's kind of weird. It's similar to the dead zone after Solas breaks it off, but at least there you're broken up so it makes more sense for you not to talk to him. And I know the LI is on the balcony after the Corypheus battle, and you get those "kiss anytime" things. Is that really what does it for people? A few pixel kisses makes the difference between a romance arc that's satisfying and one that's not?

 

I really hope the blogger has some inside line on Bioware and there's tons of Solas stuff on the cutting room floor that can easily be added back in, but I'm afraid this person just didn't "get" Solas and they're hoping there'll be something that comes along to fix that.

I suppose the 'kiss anytime' thing allows for filling in the blanks, sort of. There's interaction, even if it's just a repeated kiss with no dialogue, it allows the player to feel like the romance is more 'present' and consistent.

 

Personally, I think it's kind of cute with my qunquisitor and Josie but it certainly doesn't change the content of the romance or how I feel about it.

I think that's how most of the romances work. Most of the romance content is added into their friendship/character arc scenes. I think someone said that Cullen has two romance specific scenes? Regardless, there aren't a lot of romance only scenes for any of them and Solas has less content to begin with.

I am honestly wondering how the heck did Cullen thread get so many pages.. I mean.. He is pretty simple character. He does not have any mysteries unsolved like Solas and that is the reason why I can understand all of us Solas fans being excited and so on about stuff and discussing plus having multiple theories about it. I don't know.. I mean I like him as a character but to me he was pretty boring to romance with.. might be because he reminded me too much of Alistair and since I romanced Alistair in the first one (because Zevran was just for me pretty awful character.. I don't know I am not trying to be offensive so if you like him don't get mad) XD I just didn't really like him and because of that I picked Alistair. He was cute yes but just not interesting enough. I have a feeling that most of the ppl pick Cullen only because of his looks ( I mean for the first time when they do not know his character yet unless they spoiled themselves ) well I picked Iron Bull. I just didn't like Iron Bull so much only because he was too sure about himself to be my taste. I do not really like that kind of men who sort of.. think a little highly of themselves? XD I know he was also joking many times but that is a picture I got while romancing him. Second time I took Cullen. ( I had spoiled myself and I saw that Solas would leave you so I didn't want to romance him at first because I did not know the reason so I just thought it was another thing that didn't make any sense ). I got really bored having Cullen.. it was like.. having Alistair thingie all over again and there was nothing special in it. I mean a feeling.. no special feeling FOR ME there haha. After I got to know who Solas actually is I wanted to try it out because after it all started to make sense and the story turned out to be the best one there. I just don't know how can they discuss so much about Cullen when there is not really a lot to discuss about him lol..

I completely understand where you're coming from, even if I don't 100% agree.  I love Cullen, but I simply cannot get myself to finish a game with a character that romances him.  I think it's just because he's not a companion, so I feel like he's not really part of my team.  If he was, I think he'd be just about perfect.  I want my LI to travel alongside me always.  This is personal preference, as I'm the type of player who never switches up my team unless I have to -- yes, this results in about a million playthroughs, but oh well.

I heard that there will be a DLC about Solas romance.. now Idk if it is just a rumor.. but I heard it. We may have it but I WOULD PERSONALLY BELIEVE that we would have some sort of DLC well idk what kind of but the game ends up the way that way that you finish the last mission and if I checked correctly you will not have Solas on your party? so.. I would believe that we are going to have multiple DLC:s for the story. So this time you do not have to start all over again. What the DLC:s are gonna be about..  I got no idea... maybe similar to witch hunt? Maybe not? maybe sth random? we will see but I agree with that.. Solas romance is unfinished and we deserve even one sex scene and idk if the ending will be tragic but if it will then I hope that Bioware will make it perfectly tragic.. not like Thane's story that he dies in the beginning already and no one cries for him and also because he died very idiotic way... gosh.. they failed that story so badly.

I could never get into Mass Effect and now I'm perfectly glad I never did.

 

I don't think anyone knows anything about a DLC yet. Not even in-the-know people know, I bet. 

Well, developers would know, but I doubt it's gone much further than that.

 

Is everyone (devs) back to work? Weekes? Gaider? They have to be working on -something-, right? Or are they all working on unknown IP? 

 

I don't want a new IP. I want more Dragon Age.

 

Pay attention to the twitters of the voice actors. If they go back into the studio and tweet about it you can find stuff out that way.

It's nice to read a different perspective and see how other's react to our beloved hedge mage, but I agree with you that part of the post comes off as weird. On the one hand I agree that Solas' romance lacks the same amount of content as the other romances - because it objectively does have fewer scenes, no option for intermediate physical contact, and no "fade-to-black". On the other hand, saying that the IB's romance is clearly "the best" and Solas' is clearly "the worst" seems silly. It's not a competition, but the Solas fandom is pretty big _{(even compared to the IB's)}, so clearly BW is doing something right. Either the romance is good or they appealed to a "type" of person that happens to comprise a large portion of their fanbase.

 

Still would have liked a fade-to-black, but I respect the writers' decision to exclude that for whatever reason they chose. Still would have liked additional scenes, but that is always the case with my favorite romances. If they'd added more, it would have been fluff because there's no way to progress his character within the story of DAI. I feel like we know the perfect amount about Solas for where we are in the story. I think if we'd gotten to know him more intimately (in the sense of learning more about his character/past, not sexually) it would seem very strange for the Quiz to accept the break-up and not chase after him immediately after Coryphefish is "defeated". It's still strange and we barely know him. So I'm hoping that we traded in our fluff scene for some badass future DLC or DAI-2 content with Solas. ^{Team Optimism!}
