This is probably answred somewhere in the 1000+ pages on this character but I'm playing an elf and going to romance Solas and was wondering if it would be a huge turn off to him if i choose templars over mages?

Seriously there are a lot of "I love you, but we shouldn't be together!" men in the DA world. Alistair, Fenris, Anders, Solas, Blackwall....

Carth from KoTOR, Valen from HotUD, the list goes on. I think sadism, like Eivuwan pointed out, is the primary quality that the executives look for when hiring new writers. It's practically a tradition at this point!

Okay.

 

So, here's my big, long follow-up with screenies. For space purposes, I'll be kind and spoiler the big images.

 

Let's start with the Hinterlands, since that is the first one you get and Solas actually prompts you and gives you a quest marker for it. I got that after getting approvals from him in conversation in Haven, then I visited the Hinterlands for the first time ever, did a bunch of stuff to help refugees and also gained more of his approval, then went back to Haven. It was after that first Hinterlands visit that I spoke to him in Haven and got the quest.

Next we'll travel to the Storm Coast. I actually went here first in my screenshot-grabbing adventures tonight, so I marked it (rather inefficiently) with a waypoint toggle on the bigger map. On the zoomed in one, I got smart and just stood by the damned thing, so my actual arrow is as accurate as I can get you dear folks:

Now we'll head on over to the Fallow Mire. This one is a little tricky to get to. Stumbling into The Den isn't so bad - you've a Fade Rift there to guide you - but the actual artifact is in an apostate camp. When in The Den, you have two different passages along the right-hand wall (I say this as right-hand as you enter The Den from the Veilfire Tower area). The SECOND passage in the wall is the one you want. Go in, turn right, walk through the water and you're in the apostate's camp:

Over in the Exalted Plains, this one can be a bear as well. You can only access it after you have opened the passage to Ghilan'nain's Grove, which is a war table operation after you've discovered the blocked passage. Once inside and heading towards the passageway on the right, the first left turn is the most direct path (the second left turn takes you to an underground area with a puzzle and stuff). Work your way through the swampy area and keeping to the left. You'll find it at the foot of a bridge leading to - irony of all ironies - the Offering to the Dread Wolf shrine. There is a high dragon here, but she will not attack you. At least, not on Casual. She'll fly overhead and bluster roars at you, then go land off to the right. She never bothered me until I walked right up to her, so she won't bother you at Fen'Harel's shrine:

Also, had to get Fen's picture in front of his own shrine. Seriously. How could I not?

 

 

The last one I have gotten so far... the mysterious one that is apparently missing from the strategy guide... the one located in the Lost Temple of Dirthamen. This location does not appear on your map until you resolve a quest. I was in the Exalted Plains... received a quest from the Dalish looking for a lost member... found his body and a note saying he was trying to reach the Shrine of Sylaise, and so I went there. It's where I got Solas his spiffy set of Ancient Elven Robes. It's also where I got a glyph via veilfire and sparked a quest to find 4-5 other glyphs in the Plains. Did that, then got a war table operation to have someone decipher the glyphs I'd collected. When that was done, the Lost Temple appeared on my world map. And awaaaaaaaaay we go:

While exploring, Solas sensed one of his artifacts. This is where it was found:

Doesn't matter. It's more important what you do with the templars/mages after you choose one side.

I wanted to do something more up-close. Also, helps to see the in-game map and a little screenie of the surrounding area it's in.

 

And if anyone has any trouble finding them, do let me know. I don't mind filming little YouTube videos of me riding from camp to the artifact if one of the trickier ones is really stumping you. Some of them sort of blend in to the grass as well, so you might get left searching around and then feeling like a dork when you finally find the damned thing... by accidentally stubbing your toe on it searching around!

Hey, another follow-up. I see they mark a SECOND artifact in both the Hinterlands and the Storm Coast.

 

Wow. Hmm. Hadn't found those two. Will check that second Hinterlands one tomorrow. The second Storm Coast one, I fear, is inside that thaig that I don't know how to get into yet (I suspect it's quest-related and, thus, gated to me so far).

 

This DEFINITELY confirms there's more than 10 of these things.

Ugh I know. Especially since - unlike all the other romances - we get no post-battle scene! I guess Cole does say that one thing about Solas, but it's not really romance-related. Sure, he's just an old boyfriend and you just saved the world but it's still got to be rough...

I can't decide if he doesn't leave anything because he doesn't plan on coming back or because he does. Why not leave a note, but leave a fresco unfinished? Obviously no one else is going to finish that. But he must not have left any personal belongings because I'm sure Lavellan or Leliana would be sorting through all of those (though I've never been under the impression that he had many belongings). I think his "what we had was real" after you beat Coryphefish was his note, because it was only then that he decided he wasn't going to be able to go back to Skyhold.

If it makes any difference at all, relationship status with Solas at this point is after second kiss scene and before "Wicked Hearts" quest with the ballroom dancing and stuff. So, well into a romantic relationship in which I have been riding around doing a whole lot of random stuff while fervently ignoring the main questlines because my choice is advancing the main plot forward or going ahead and agonizing my way through "Here Lies The Abyss", both of which scare me because Impending Pain.

 

In case you have trouble reading the text, it says:

 

"Solas, bright and sad, observes and accepts. Spirit self, seeing the soul, Solas, but somehow sorrows."

 

 

And that's it. Nothing before it, and after it was just the usual dialogue wheel where I can ask him about the random crap he does around Skyhold.

I agree with you. I think he felt that his initial plan was going to be hard to swallow, but now that the

Alistair if you are anything but a Female Noble Warden , Zevran, Sebastian (I can just picture him going "Maker forgive me" everytime you had sex.. ME has them to .. Jacob, Kaidan, Thane. pretty much the only decent male relationship for FShep is Garrus and even he has issues

And I did the exact difference- I started my solas playthrough and I don't think I can finish right now. Too fragile. So I'm starting back over with Cullen because he's sweet and safe.

 

Also, don't ever youtube "Breaking Up With Cullen".  It's basically the most horrible thing.

To answer your questions:

He'll call you Da'len in Haven if you pick the "We are trying. Accept it." dialogue option when you ask him about Elven culture (and you argue about the Dalish).  You say "Ar abelas, Hahren", to which he responds, "Ar abelas, Da'len."

 

The "fade-tongue" comment is after your first kiss.  He'll apologize for the kiss saying he shouldn't have encouraged it, and if you pick "but you still did anyway" it goes like this (paraphrased):

Lavellan: You say that now, but you're the first one who used tongue.

Solas: I did no such thing!

Lavellan: Oh, does it not count if it's fade-tongue?

Thank you!!    I guess I'll have to reluctantly play another Solas romance to get those lines... Damn....

if he is an ancient elf from the times of Arlathan  it is probably more like around 2000- 3000 years old ..Arlathan in 981 Ancient and Solas says that Elves had already begun losing their immortality at that point due to Civil War, and other problems within their society. The Andrastian Chantry, 1st Blight, founding of HalimSharal, Dales, and Grey Wardens were all founded in 170 Ancient.. over 1000 years before the events of DAI
