Hello Solas thread, I'm in need of some advice. I haven't finished the game, so I'm avoiding reading many of your posts out of fear of spoilers. 

 

I was getting along very well with my favorite apostate, I'd kept him in my party very consistently, finished his personal quest early. He announced that he liked me lots and lots, and would greet me enthusiastically as his friend.

 

Now I've just finished the Abyss quest, and a few related judgements on my throne, and he's so upset with me that I am not "his friend" anymore, which is making me a little sad. 

 

My question is this: Are there any opportunities for significant approval gain coming up?

Further thought on final romance scene:

Aside from wanting to be sure Lavellan KNEW how he felt, part of the reason that he might have had to end it is that she was sure to realize he's an ancient elven god.  Even if she hates Fen'Harel, and thus Solas, he's a god.  He's something she'd want to worship, not someone she'd want to be in a relationship with.  It might have caused their relationship to end once she found out, anyway, depending on the character.

 

Well, there's a precedent.

Andraste loved the Maker, or so the story says. So the idea that a mortal could love a god isn't far-fetched. We don't know much about Thedassian(?) literature, but if its similar to Earth lit. than Mortal/God romance is probably a popular trope. In fact religious art and literature (in the real world) has blurred the line between divine and earthly pleasure for pretty much its entire existence (see the Ecstasy of Saint Teresa by Bernini, most religious poetry from 16th century Britain, and the Song of Solomon in the Bible). Of course Thedas doesn't have to follow the same pattern, but it's so prevalent/universal IRL that until the writers say otherwise I'd assume that it does. Whether or not that relationship works out well is a different matter entirely.

 

I think whatever his rationalization is, it's just that: a rationalization. He didn't consult Lavellan and thus can only make assumptions about what her feelings would be. I think the real reason he made the decision to break it off has very little to do with her and very much to do with what he wants. I love him to pieces, but I don't believe for a moment that he's breaking things off selflessly. Otherwise he'd make her hate him. That would be the easiest way to make sure she moves on. But instead he wants her to know that he loved her. He wants her to know that despite whatever he's going to do, that part of him was good. Making her hate him and removing that moral ambiguity would make her life so much easier, but despite all of his talk of walking his path alone and not involving his former friends...he still wants to to be understood. Which to me is terribly tragic.

I felt like that by that point in the story, my Lavellan had lost a lot of her connection with the Dalish. She'd been surrounded by non-elves, dealing with human problems (well not really but seemingly human problems), befriending them and becoming more like them. She'd probably spent a lot of off-screen time with Solas learning about the "real" ancient elves, and the Temple of Mythal brought it all home for her. She loves her clan and her people, but she doesn't feel "Dalish" like she did when she first received the Vallaslin - she feels elven. That was my rationale for it anyway.

 

Plus yeah, way more intimate than a sex scene. Though I got a little weak in the knees when he calls Lavellan "perfect" if you keep them

I did, yeah. I thought it made for some nice character development for me Lavellan. He doesn't get upset if you choose not to, though.

 

I think the fact that he doesn't get upset about Lavellan choosing to keep her markings is rather important. It's a step toward accepting not only her, but the Dalish in general.

He even told Sera that she was fine just the way she was in one of their banters. Solas is so complicated and sometimes contradictory. Yet it somehow all fits his character. It's hard to know what he really wants to do.

It just kills me to think of how Lavellan must be feeling if she chooses to have her Vallaslin removed. Solas leaves her (emotionally and physically), so she looses him as a pillar of support and understanding. She will no longer be immediately recognized by anyone as Dalish, effectively separating her from her friends, family, and other Dalish clans. Even though her own clan would likely welcome her back, it's such a visible and shocking change. Looking in the mirror would just be a constant reminder of the misconceptions of the Dalish, and her heartbreak over Solas. UGH. She must feel so isolated.

 

She trusts him in such an intimate way, and he leaves her. My heart really breaks for Lavellan. Even if they are able to rekindle their romance in future DLC, Solas has irrevocably changed their relationship by breaking her trust like that.

I honestly wouldn't take Solas with hair now. It just....isn't right. I am fully ready to accept the idea that Solas had hair like in some of the concept art when he was younger, however!

Lovely Solas loving friends, since I cannot even manage to attend an Ethics class without my mind drifting to Solas and Dragon Age in general (although mostly Solas) I decided I need to share my scattered thoughts in a post (this is most certainly a futile attempt to empty my brain of Solas).

I will put the following under spoiler tags in an effort to conceal how long it is  for those souls that brave this thread but do not wish for end game spoilers.

I won’t be giving any theories to what Solas is planning because there are posters much cleverer than me that have already said everything a lot better than I could ever hope to. Anywho, I’ll start with the post epilogue scene.

On the post credit exchange

So the infamous Flemythal (who came up with that? It’s very clever, props to you). Seeing as Solas will speak to Cole post main quest I’d say it is very unlikely he is gone/has no control over his body. I am more curious about the fate of Flemythal. As it stands the following possibilities seem likely to me:

1.       Flemythal willingly gave her power to Solas to help him obtain his (and her?) goal.

1a. The entity Mythal now resides in Solas (and possibly and Old God soul… and I thought shacking up with Anders and Vengeance was weird) but Solas has control over her will, or they become one will.
1b. Flemythal is destroyed to give Solas his power, or temporarily out of the picture because she gave up all her power.

2.       Solas did the above but took it from Flemythal (Dread Wolf, friend and betrayer *Lavellan sobs*)

3.       Flemythal took over Solas, but that would not explain his communicating with Cole, unless he was somehow able to wrestle control from Flemythal.

Important questions- Is the part of Flemythal that was Flemeth still alive or did the exchange destroy her? Can SolasFlemythalOldGodofOptionalPresence be separated, because I’m pretty open to a lot of things but I don’t think my Lavellan would appreciate the extra company. What was Mythal’s role in the Dread Wolf legend/why is she the only other Elven god around?

On “Oh my Maker, Solas you bastard where is my heart and what is this liquid seeping from my eyes?!?”

I am obsessed with adored the Solas romance, but Solas is far from Prince Charming. He made a lot of bad judgment calls (understatement) when it comes to his feelings for Lavellan.

_·          I think it’s reasonable for me to assume that he knew he and Lavellan would not have a happy ending. He warns her that their relationship isn’t a good idea (better warnings next time buddy) and he does appear very conflicted about starting a relationship with her. Yet still, he goes along with it (and yes Lavellan pressured him yada yada-- I made her to attractive for her own good is more like it!) even though he knows better. But you know, he’s only human…um so to speak.

_·          I want to know if he went to the last romance scene with the attention of breaking up with Lavellan or decided after/during their kiss. To the former I say “Solas you’re an arse, an adorable one, but still and arse.” If it was the latter it makes me wonder exactly what he was feeling at that moment for him to decide to end it. Someone else posted the idea that Lavellan was effecting his judgment too much and he was almost willing to give up his plans for her. Personally, I like this better than the “I’m doing it to keep you safe” which I think is a wee bit clichéd (very clichéd). I also like the theory that he broke up because he knew/assumed he and the Inquisitor would be on opposite sides in the future. This is sort of evident by what he says to a non-romance/friendquisitor, “No matter what happens, know that I respect you.” (this may not be the exact wording).

No matter how pro elf/ understanding your Inquisitor may have for what Solas plans to do it does not change the fact he inadvertently caused the deaths of thousands (with a name like Corypheus [insert snarky comment here]), betrayed your trust (especially if you played a romanced Lavellan, and for those Dalish out there, is the friggin’ Dread Wolf (however untrue the stories are I can’t imagine that a Lavellan would have no reaction to this. Imagine finding out your boyfriend is the Boogeyman or the Grim Reaper… hmm angel of death boyfriend…*clears throat* uhh…where was I?)

If we get a Solas story expansion or DLC (please please please please. I’ll give you anything! Here take my money, take my dignity, take my soul!!!). I would very much prefer that it isn’t a choice like we had with Anders romance. Forgiving Anders was just too cheery and out of character (he just killed innocent people! And probably destroyed my house! I worked hard for that place!), yet I didn’t just want to end it and never see him again. Let me yell a good deal at Solas, maybe toss a few fireballs (knives for rogues, maybe punches for warriors), yell some more (Elven curses!), be devastated, ect. ect. ect. then stay with him forever! I’m obviously asking for too much Please me wants this to happen, this game wasn’t all about Solas and Lavellan’s relationship I will implode without a satisfying ending to their romance.

On Solas being Dread Wolf possessed or just Dread Wolf

                So, with characters like Flemythal, stupid Anders Anders and Justice and Wynne and her little helper, it makes one wonder whether or not Solas is the Dread Wolf or if Solas and the Dread Wolf are part of some unholy union. I’m leaning towards the former because he has what I’m thinking is the ancient elf look (bald elves, who would of thunk it? Legolas you and your fabulous hair need to leave). Of course I’m only taking that from the Mythal Temple elves and Zathrian (not ancient but older). Plus, Solas seems pretty conflicted about things (to be with or not to be with Lavellan, that is the question), but doesn’t display the 50 shades of crazy that Anders (and Flemeth to be honest, but she’s the good crazy) had. So yeah, my verdict is that Solas’ body is his body, but I could be wrong. The better question, I think, is whether or not Solas is immortal (like immortal god immortal, not just I’ll live a long time if I don’t get shanked immortal) or just really old because he was hibernating. He’d better not be immortal if there’s no way for my Lavellan to obtain it!

Some random thoughts about Lavellan being clueless (and other Inquisitors for that matter)

So Lavellan… your boyfriend is an ancient Elven “god” and you didn’t notice?
Lavellan: What!? I had no idea!!!
Really? His convenient timing/arrival? Super knowledge about everything to do with Ancient Elves (it was the fade!), and the fact he was actually called the Dread Wolf by Nightmare didn’t tip you off?
Lavellan *pouty face*: The cute scare above his eyebrow distracted me…
Of course it did… now just explain that to your clan.

I mean really! Lavellan (and Inquisitor friends) never asked him personal questions/was never thrown off by his elusive answers.

Solas: My travels in the fade
Lavellan: But what about--
Solas: The fade
Lavellan: That doesn’t make sense--
Solas: THE FADE!!!!!!

I think this same nitpick can also be put on the Blackwall romance.
Point is, Leliana you’re fired, go do your divine thing, try not to assassinate too many people and find me a better spymaster.

On the magical fountain of magicalness

I dunno bout you but I think it is was completely unfair that Morrigan got a graceful scene consuming the fountain and I had to be all “aaah ancient elf fountain! It stings!!” Also, I drank from the fountain for my Lavellan playthrough. I mean, I was all like “hell no I’m not drinking from the fountain of possible slavery and elven tears.” But it was probably going to be a long time since I played an elf again and who else would be stupid enough willing to drink that crap (more infusing with, less actual drinking). Anyways, very curious about how it’s going to play out (my Lavellan wants an ancient well refund) . Especially since there’s been no reference to my Inquisitor hearing elven voices since the summon Mythal quest (perhaps Mythal chooses when the fountain/ voices can be heard?) and of course we want to know who has control over the well drinker (hopefully Flemythal isn’t angry about the whole “attempting to kill her in Origins” thing).

Other thoughts

During the battle at Haven when we decide to go and launch the last trebuu-thingy and Cory and his dragon show up where the heck do all my companions go!? Did you guys seriously just leave me there to die!? Solas I thought my flirts mattered to you!!!!

Okay. Awesome comment from Cole about lack of Solas…. No one else is going to say anything? Yes, let’s pretend he never existed (is there anymore no more Solas comments? I didn’t find any). That’ll make me feel loads better. Okay Leliana commented too, maybe he’ll come back? He better, you’re still fired though).

Sorry guys, wolves do not mate for life. They are mostly monogamous, but will mate again after the death of their partner and males may be inclined to dalliances with other dominant females they are close with…like their sisters (eeeeeewww, let’s stop comparing Solas to the wolf animal, and I’m watching you Mythal!!)

No. Either the Inquisitor or Morrigan has to drink from the well. Not sure if drinking gets a "disapproves" or a "greatly disapproves" from Solas, but I think it's possible to get some approval back in his conversation after you get back, but not as much as you lose. Not sure of the exact dialogue options though

 

If all else fails then you can always bolster his approval by a) Asking him tons of questions and b] going out and finding elven artifacts. I think there's a list of them in the OP.

So my new favorite past time when I'm driving is listening to banter playlists on YouTube and I've been listening to the party comments based on various locations. There is a hilarious running joke some of you have probably heard. Every time Sera comes into a new area she goes "Ohhhh the Veil is scratchy here" or "the veillllllll is wet", mocking Solas. It's really funny, and in one of locations Varric or someone mentions how Solas is always taking about the Veil and Solas acts all affronted "I do not." And then the party members are all like...."actually bro yeah you do" lol. It's great.

Y'know, the whole game I never thought he didn't accept the Dalish, or anything. I just thought he had very complicated and conflicting feelings towards them because of their beliefs and misconceptions. To me, him being okay with Lavellan keeping the vallaslin is more symbolic of him moving forward and accepting change.

on reviving the ancient Gods. He doesn't strike me as selfish, and from what he says it seems like bringing back the creators would only serve to assuage his guilt. He never says anything good about them, unless I am forgetting something. And as much as he doesn't consider the Dalish/City Elves to be his people, he doesn't seem to hate them either. He's angry at the modern elves, but he also knows that they cannot help their ignorance. I think sometimes he fulfills an almost paternal role when dealing with them, even though other times he tries to distance himself. I really wish we knew who he was referring to when he tells Mythal "The People need me."

Even non-Dalish (Sera, Cassandra, Josie) are curious about where they go. I imagine it must be super-painful to have your friends ask about it and instead of it being a happy memory (I'm free from the symbol of slavery), it's a crappy one (he tore down my identity right before he broke my heart). And there's the old "you can't go home again"; even if it's physically possible for her to get Vallaslin again, she already made the decision not to subject herself to that symbol. It's never going to mean the same thing to her now that he told her about them. I agree - it must be horrible being Lavellan after that.

For the record, Dorian also questions whether the romance with him is a good idea and his works out just fine. I'd think it's only natural to question a serious relationship that starts in the middle of the war. I wish when he said "this isn't a good idea" he gave a better indication of why so Lavellan could be more informed.

My money is still on the latter. I think if he'd intended to break it off from the beginning of the scene, then he never would have kissed her. He might have removed her Vallaslin, but I think he would've been like "now the other truth.  We cannot be together in this world, I'm sorry." His break-up is too sudden, and his reasoning too thin IMO for it to be planned out. He doesn't always make the best decisions, but he is able to be meticulous about his planning and I think if he'd intended to break up it would have been a little more controlled

Inadvertent is the key word. I think that Lavellan could get past that with some doing, if giving the orb to Cory was truely a mistake and if Solas did not anticipate what was going to happen. The problem will be that he never trusted her enough to explain it. To me the lying about the events is much worse than their actual occurrence. I'm trying to imagine something similar to this...OK so my boyfriend is a chemist. In my hypothetical world he discovers a dangerous chemical (I know nothing about how chemistry works). He gives it to a government thinking it will be put to good use and then they actually use it to cause a huge war. He's the one who was actually betrayed, and if he told me I would feel bad for him. If he didn't tell me, and let me fight against them thinking the bad government had invented it, I'd be very pissed (understatement). Actually thinking about it that way, I'd probably still forgive him. To me it really depends on how Cory was given the orb, and what Solas wanted him to do with it. That might just be me though

Jeeze I hope they can be separated. Lavellan is not OK with flirting with Morrigan's mom. Gross.

 

I suspect the reason Mythal is around is because she was murdered. The other creators were probably trapped afterwards (and maybe as a result of her murder), and her spirit was out and about doing whatever it was doing until it found Flemeth. Or she was murdered while locked away, but her spirit escaped into the Fade and then she was able to work her way to Flemeth. Either way, I think the key is that she is "dead" and the other guys are not

Thank you for all the help, I just ended up save scumming and being more the person he wants me to be. Actually...I think I like some of these decisions better now, anyway. It just goes to show how awesome he is, I suppose. 

 

One other thing, since you mention Elven artifacts...

 

Whenever we're at Griffons...Keep, I think it is...in the Western approach, he mentions sensing an Elven artifact. I keep looking and I finding nothing, and I do have this vague memory of already having found one there.

 

An obscure question, I know, but is this a known bug anyone is familiar with?

I think the way forward for the elves of Thedas is something they'll have to create for themselves in the present. The ancient elves and their gods were douchebags. Advanced powerful douchebags, but douchebags. Time for elves to look to the future instead of grubbing around blindly in the ashes of the past. I...so companions, when you're controlling them...can ride whatever mount you have (yes, I just realized this)...

 

So I put Solas on the mount, the horse I currently have as I just got it (new playthrough, Hinterlands)....and I am very attracted to this image

Also my sister has a collection of incredibly sappy love poetry (she's Cassandra incarnate-- tough on the outside and a "makes me want to gag" romantic on the inside. Hehe her name is actually Cassandra). Anyway, I was flipping through her internet collection of love poetry (Solas romance made me a "makes me want to gag" romantic too) and I found this gem!

I did. It was a difficult decision, because whatever else it means it did mark Lavellan as one of her people. What made me decide to have them removed is one of the options you can choose says the elves swore never again to submit to slavery, so the idea of keeping the vallaslin was uncomfortable for her. She trusted Solas and his knowledge wholeheartedly, but at the end of the scene she was left more than a little overwhelmed by everything. It was a powerful moment that gave me all sorts of feels, so I can't imagine what was going through her mind.

I've never heard this song before! It's lovely and fits so well! The music even sounds like something that could possibly be played in Thedas!
