Alright guys, not sure if you all remember me (it feels like aaagggees ) but I am back and have finished the game. (Semi-completionist playthrough - I did all the actual non-fetchy quests - the ones that triggered anyway... looking at you, fabled Solas quest that never came up even though I found all your stupid artifacts ...  but I 'only' killed eight dragons and I didn't finish all the collections and things).

This thread has grown like 300 pages since I read it last so some of what I have to say has likely been said, but, whatever, I need to talk. Seems like you guys have done away with the spoiler tags but I'll stick it all in one just in case. Warning: It's long.

So, unfortunately, while the break-up scene was a surprise, I did end up getting spoiled about the end of the game when I thought I'd screwed something up in the romance and wanted to find out if I could fix it. Alas, the heartbreak was inevitable, as you all know. Though the Fen'Heral thing wasn't a huge surprise - I did catch wind of some wolf imagery being associated with Solas before going on blackout, and if you listen to him carefully you get the sense there is a lot more to him than he lets on. I was figuring he was an ancient elf with some ties to our Dread Wolf, but not that he was the Dread Wolf. Hot, but I digress

 

Anyway, my thoughts on the break-up are this - He didn't bring her to that spot with the intention of breaking up with her. I think it's just that moment when he pulls away and his expression becomes sad, is the moment he realizes he has to. I think that's when he realizes just how much he loves her, and that to move forward with the relationship would be hypocritical and cruel (especially with his gift of the truth - or a truth, but he can't give her the thruth). And that she would distract him (not vice versa, like he claims). And I thnk when he says it'll all be clear later, he does intend for that to be so, but then the orb breaks. He leaves, devastated, and he doesn't return because his plans, whatever they are, have changed.

 

My theory about the orb is that yes, it held his power, which is now lost, and is a key to something he must now find another means to open. It could also be that it is what made him immortal? So it being broken means that he now has a lot less time to do whatever he needs to do, and he has to get that power from somewhere else...

 

Which leads to my theory on the Flemeth scene. When they first meet, we get the impression the meeting is her idea. She seems remorseful when she says 'you shouldn't have given your orb to Corypheus.' I think what was supposed to happen next is that she was supposed to absorb Solas' spirit. Not sure why exactly, but we know she is a mover of the fates, so to speak, and that she absorbs the power of (willing) others to help her do that. We can also guess that he is powerless to fix his own mistakes, which might be why she offers to take him into herself? Especially if he might no longer be immortal? I think that's why she sounds so genuinely grieved when she says she is sorry. But his 'sorry' has a harder edge to it. He glances up, looking determined, and she seems genuinely shocked right before her essence goes into him. At least, that's how I interpret it. Obviously, it was left vague for a reason. Hopefully a future DLC will provide some answers.

 

Not sure what his plan is exaclty - he mentions a time when there was no veil and spirits walked among the living, when everyone had magic - I think he wants to give that back to the world since he was the one who unintentionally stole it in the first place by locking away the 'Creators.' This ties into Sandal's prophesy as well. But I don't think he wants to free the old elven gods. That seems too counter with all his supposed distaste for them and how they enslaved their people. And while his banter with Cole suggests he felt guilt for doing so, I don't think he wants them back. I could be his intention is to free them and absorb their power like he did with Flemythal? I really can't say. Will whatever he's trying to do make him a future antagonist? I hope not. Or at least, I hope it depends on the player character. An anti-magic pro-Templar Chantry type might think his goal a terrifying one. Most of the characters I have played would not.

 

I would love for there to be some closure for him and our Inquisitor though. It just seems there was so much left unresolved and unsaid. Really amazing romance, even if it was light on content, with a really incredible character. I think Solas might be my absolute favorite in the DA universe - intelligent, complex, cunning yet compassionate, and a mythological figure to boot. Kept me guessing right to the end. And his romance just adds such a beautiful, if tragic, layer to his story and ours. I am so glad they went ahead and added it to the game.

 

Now excuse me while I eat some chocolate and cry.

 

And start the game again with a Cullen romance. I hear it's sweet and fluffy. I could use some sweet and fluffy right now.

I can't even imagine. I believe some of them are done with additional programs to boost the graphics. You don't tend to play at that level, just take great shots.

When I replayed that scene, and the following dialogue when he says everything will be made clear I thought, "Oh honey, you may be the Dread Wolf but you have no idea how screwed you are."  My quizzy has a rather Sherlockian quality toward finding the truth; once she's on the scent, there is nothing and no one who can dissuade her from her purpose, however painful the truth might be.  Breaking up with her?  Hurtful, but hey, either partner has the right to end the relationship.  Mentioning the possibility of the truth, and then not giving her any explanation?  Nope.  Not happening.  She's going to find that truth whether Solas likes it or not, with a Thedas-spanning network of spies and influence

I'm so glad I gave Solas the Grand Enchanter's Staff, the one with a wolf head carving on top.  He carried it for the entire last half of the game, and it fit perfectly.

 

Sometimes theories really hit on the head, don't they?

 

My canon is so sad now, my Hawke is dead, and then there's Lavellan's situation...  I'm hoping there's some story DLC planned for Solas.

 

In that last scene, my Lavellan chose not to remove her vallaslin, and I love that Cole's banter later was accurate to my headcanon that she worried that Solas had left her because she kept it.  And because she drank from the well, now she is bound to whatever Solas has become...  What a cliffhanger.

I dunno, but I got it.  And yeah, that line means a lot.  Otherwise it's easy to think it was all just a means to an end.

You only get that if he's romanced, I think. I didn't get it on my human noble playthrough and they were on good terms.

It depends on the dialogue options you take during the final romance scene. That one means you took the sad options, he says you were right to be angry if you take the angry ones. If he isn't romanced but you are friendly, he says he respects you.

I would argue that Solas has a much greater distaste for the present than he does for any horrible thing that happened during his time. So any dangerous, dumb thing he could come up with that would make things more like they were during his time is potentially something he would do.

You only get that if he's romanced, I think. I didn't get it on my human noble playthrough and they were on good terms.

If he is on good terms with you, he says something like "Whatever comes next, I want you to know that you'll always have my respect"

And if you are not on good terms, than he simply says nothing and stares at you angrily like the broken orb is your fault or something.

That makes sense! Really a series of bad breaks for a Solas who isn't your friend or romance.

I've been re-watching the trailers, now that Varric's lovely trailer been mentioned, and I'm wondering: that great Last Supper scene in the trailers. It's not in the game, is it? I got the card game scene, but it wasn't the same(and it didn't have Solas! though it did have Sera under the table). Not in the game, then?

So I just actually finished the game (I was putting it off because the feelings were too much), and here's what I think about that after credits scene!

I doubt I'm the only one who thinks this or voiced this, but...

 

As much as I love our favorite Dread Wolf, I think he forcefully took Flemythal's soul/essence from her. I know someone earlier said that that couldn't be true because Flemeth said "a soul cannot be forced upon the unwilling" but... that doesn't apply to a soul being forcefully taken. The look on Solas's face right before the soul transferwhateverthatwas happened screamed "determination" to me, as did his expression when he looked up and his eyes were glowing.

 

So I think he surprised Flemythal at the end and took her soul/essence for his own, because whatever it is he's planning, he needs her power to do it. That also means that whatever he's planning, he didn't think she'd agree to help. I think all the theories that he's planning to release the gods he trapped is probably true. That seems like something Mythal wouldn't want, and would refuse to help with, which would give an excuse for him to forcefully take her power.

 

BUT... If that's the case, it's likely he's going to be an antagonist in the future, which is sad. I just hope those of us who romanced him get some kind of actual closure. Preferably the kind that doesn't involve someone dying. lol
