He cried when writing the romance!!!! AHHHHHH!!!  I'm so sad now TT.TT  Is this going to be the first BW romance with no chance of a 'happy' resolution? Noooo, do not want! What do I need to do to make that not happen? On the bright side, it's satisfying to know that a lot of us were right in thinking he went to the last romance scene fully intending to tell her everything.

 

OK so before I wanted Lavellan to find out about Solas' identity on her own. I felt like that would give her power, and she wouldn't be the clueless little elf anymore. But after listening to this interview I kind of want Solas to tell Lavellan himself. I feel like that would be such a big thing for his development. That would be him at his most vulnerable, both because he would actually be trusting Lavellan completely and because he'd be opening himself up to a reaction that would undoubtedly hurt him in some way (If her reaction is negative, it hurts because he doesn't want her to hate him. If her reaction is positive it's almost worse, because then he has to justify hurting her before and leaving her to do whatever it is he needs to do). Revealing his identity and his plans would undoubtedly open things up for Lavellan to contest them, and I feel like he has a lot of doubt about his ideas even though he is 100% committed to them. It would be really hard for him, and I'm sure he knows that.

 

I can't do that, if he's gonna be sad forever I'm done, I can't watch that go down, it would utterly destroy me.

It seems like his idea to tell you about the vallaslin's true origins and offer to remove them was definitely an on-the-spot thing. However, you can turn down his offer to remove them, so I don't see how it's very bothersome?

What Patrick said in the interview doesn't mean it's fully over between Lavellan and Solas.

To be fair, it isn't like they could spin it any other way than sad with the knowledge we have at the moment. [Except of course, if Solas had been lying about everything.] So the only two directions we can go into is sad or evil. I'll take sad. 

 

Comparing him to Mordin though:

Does suggest that he may be on the death=redemption track. Not to terrify anyone, but Mordin's death in the renegade ending is perhaps the most horribly gut wrenching thing Bioware has ever done.

He did live in one ending though, but you had to basically sabotage all his attempts at redeeming himself. 

Yeah the Mordin comparison makes me think that this will all end in tragedy

That interview just made me love Solas and Patrick even more,..which I didn't think was possible. Dammit Weekes, all the feelsuh. (I love the honest answer, "to make it sadder." I am SO HAPPY it got added in because Solas' romance is probably my favorite out of any of the games ever.)

I mean, technically we'd already guessed all of this, so it's not really new information. It feels final because it's from his writer but it's not like he did (or could) say anything about future plans with the character.

It's funny, but I can only imagine it bothered him all along to see her wearing slave markings when his big thing is personal freedom. You can tell because he looks pleased and touched if she asks him to remove them.

It's just a comparison though. That doesn't mean they're going to turn out exactly the same. (And remember, Mordin doesn't actually have to die.)

It's more amusing than bothersome, but it's a pretty big thing (her appearance and culture) to just drop on her on a whim as a cover-up.  The vallaslin removal scene loses its significance in a way after knowing that.

Gonna try to stay optimistic. I mean, Morrigan got her closure so...Hopefully Solas won't be the one character that absolutely cannot have a happy ending. I want to make cookies and pass them out to everyone. Everyone who comes in now gets a blanket and a cookie.

Patrick can't reveal what's coming - even the hint of what's coming and that's including feelings.  We know the romance is sad as it is and he wrote it to make it sad. The guy breaks up with you.  The relationship is written in such a way that it's SO CLEAR that Solas is in love with the player.  You know through the game that he's not a bad guy, he's thoughtful.  He's not malacious.  His banters are so key into understanding how he feels about the world.  So he's also a sympathetic character.  It's also apparent he wants to tell her - Ithat was clear in the game - that's why the romance  is sad.  We know this.  We know this is a sad romance...as it stands now.   It doesn't mean it won't be in the future.  So be optimistic.  Buff killed Angel and it all worked out

Not sabotage just...postpone. He can cure the genophage later when the galaxy isn't recovering from a mass invasion from god-like supercomputers.

Yeah I wouldn't be happy with it. Not that my unhappiness there means it won't happen...but I agree.

It's funny how awkward Weekes was when he was asked about the Solas romance. He was hesitant and sounded almost guilty haha. That's what Solas would be like except 10x more awkward if Lavellan finds him again.
