I know this was discussed some pages ago, but I would like to add that I don't see any Buddhist influence on the Qunari. The main Buddhist concern relates to acknowledging suffering is inherent to existence and also it can be removed from one's existence (this is in a nutshell what the Four Noble Truths say) And the ultimate goal is to stop hopping from one plane of existence to another, removing oneself from the impermanent flow of Samsara, by reaching the Nirvana. I don't think it has to do with finding one's place in the world; but of course if there is any aspect of Buddhism related to this that I'm missing, I would love to hear about it.

 

And just to add my two cents, the all-present divinity of the Avvars also reminds me of the aspect of Shinto that believes divinity is present everywhere in Nature. I don't know if it was a real reference for Bioware writers, but it came to mind.

Most of my characters were started because I lost track of which mods were active with which character, so I started over, only to stop playing for a few weeks and then find a bunch of cool new mods to add to the pile.

He's obviously turned on by her ability to manipulate the Fade. I'm only half kidding. As others have said, I think his fear of dying alone isn't just about literal isolation but about feeling like the last of his kind walking the world. Lavellan is the needle that pulls the thread, bringing the two worlds together and able to manipulate them, and he didn't know that was possible, let alone that he'd find it in the world he thought all but lost. Sorry, overanalysis of smutty stuff is a bad habit. Characters in my smut writing tend to go off on internal monologues rather than genital manipulations.

I wonder, from Cole's words after he leaves, if his plan involves something that will free the other gods but now that the orb is broken he would only have enough power to take a one way trip- being trapped alone wherever he ends up. A reverse of when he locked them all away and was the only one left free. The only constant being that he's always alone. Ack. If that happens, then I surely hope Lavellan's key is the one that opens that door.

As for the follow up questions: Rahel's closest friend other than Solas is definitely Cole. She gets along well with Varric, Cassandra and Dorian, but Cole is the only one of the current companions I could see her continuing to journey with. I hope she would meet Mahariel, Merrill and Ariane as well.

Definitely possible. I've been thinking a lot about what I read the other day about the Band of Three and what they gathered about Kirkwall's construction.

Here's a spoiler quote if you want to read it in full.

The Band of Three disagreed with the then-accepted theory that the Tevinter Imperium came to Kirkwall for its natural harbor and mineral wealth. They also note that Maferath attempted and failed to march on the city, but could not fathom why he would do so to begin with. Suspecting a greater reason, they continued their research, delving into continually more dangerous situations.

 

Upon acquiring some rare texts from Kirkwall's black market, the Band realized the city had hidden undercity passages which had housed Tevinter researchers. As they explored the passages, they wondered why Kirkwall's magical research was hidden, when so many other cities in the Imperium studied it publicly. Eventually, a stonemason showed the Band a map of Kirkwall, and the writer saw that the city had been built according to magical symbols; this, apparently, is why Kirkwall is very easy to get lost in.

 

During the Tevinter Imperium in Kirkwall, a large number of slaves would disappear every year. Though Kirkwall was a slave-trading hub and required large numbers of slaves in order to work the mines, the Band notes that roughly one of every ten slaves went missing, a disproportionately high number.

 

One of the notes mentions that the Band was eventually attacked by maleficarum, resulting in "V" being severely injured and perhaps his or her death. Interestingly, they note that Kirkwall's Circle of Magi has consistently had problems with blood mages and Harrowing deaths ("almost double that of Starkhaven or Ostwick"), something consistent with Hawke's experiences in Kirkwall.

 

During their research, the Band found some disturbing records about Kirkwall's architecture. The city's sewers have grooves that lead downward, apparently for blood sacrifice. They note that blood magic from a simple cut is already very powerful, and could not understand why the Imperium needed blood magic on the scale of thousands of slaves a year.

 

Eventually, the Band's research culminates in the discovery that the Imperium had been deliberately weakening Kirkwall's already thin Veil, though they do not know for what purpose. It can be inferred from the notes that Kirkwall's design was intended to be used as part of a blood ritual to do this, perhaps in order to summon demons like the Forbidden Ones.

 

The final note left by the Band suggests that they may have attempted to recreate the magister's lore they gathered. Whatever they did killed "F" and left the writer severely injured. The last member of the Band returned to seal whatever they released, saying the knowledge they had gathered must be destroyed.

Otherwise, TL;DR: Kirkwall was constructed as a CITY-SIZED, SHAPED GLYPH. It's sewers held downward grooves FOR BLOOD MAGIC RITUALS. Personally, I think this is not the first time magic of this scale was attempted. But I fully acknowledge that that is opinion.

Then the damn mod had to bug out and even though she went into labour for three days she was still pregnant at the end of it.  *shakes head* probably has something to do with me using that same save file to make multiple characters for my novels, male and female - the game registered Joan as both.

Anyway, it's late, so I am heading offline. Maybe I'll finally be able to start writing my post-game Solavellan fic. Or the compulsory Halamshiral prequel. Oh well.

She believes in the Creators, but in the "it's all I ever knew" way. Over the course of the game he faith falters until the Temple of Mythal breaks it. Learning what the gods where truly like made her unable to worship them, instead she fears them.

Yes, by the time she arrived at the well her faith was hanging by a thread, as was her identity as a dalish. Drinking was mostly a selfish decision as it was a desperate attempt to regain what she felt she was losing.

Yes, as stated her views on the Creators and the dalish where wavering. The reveal about the vallaslin was the last drop.

I bought a graphics card specifically for dragon age inquisition. I usually played indie games and can pull of high settings. Having to set it at low in DAI was a shocking revelation that my computer sucked. Now I can play the highest quality for the next 2 years! 3 years if i'm lucky. I don't play that many games. Maybe like... 2 per year.

My PC can handle DAI on higher setting but there is still the potential of serious lag. Honestly , I have always been a PC player ever since my older brother got me into the WOW scene some years ago.

I set up rules to myself that I will forever play every RPG game on PC, because computers offer the best experience for an RPG fan. The recent trend of tha gaming industry changed that. Some games that I bought were terribly optimised for PC, thus were unplayable. Which is disheartening since games coast even more in my country. Also I could see where the wind was blowing. The developers were more interested in games for the consoles, since they make up most of the sales.

Also PC games has it's inherit problems. Every PC is different from the others , even in the smallest ways. That makes it harder to determine the problems with running games. Could be the game, could be the PC, or both.

Honestly, there are two main reasons I cited Buddhism as an influence on the Qun, which in retrospect I probably shouldn't have.   Siddhartha Gautama and Ashkaari Koslun have some similarities. Namely, that of witnessing the poor, sick, and frightened, as well as the splendid and beautiful, and finally getting so sick of not finding an answer that they decide to meditate until they get an answer, dammit. For some reason, I thought the Codex entry mentioned Koslun as being from a privileged background and being surprised at the impoverished in his city. No such luck. Koslun reminds me more of Confucius or a Socrates, I guess. And this is a pretty common origin for a lot of prophets and religious founders.

Then there's the Qunari approach to the dead. Namely, that they're just a vessel for a person and the body deserves no special treatment. Some Tibetan Buddhists practice sky burial, where they club the corpses and chat casually as they leave it out for vultures. Then again, Zoroastrians have the same practice, and other Buddhists practice burial or what have you. As a fairly ignorant Westerner yahoo, this tends to stick out in my brain and leads to sloppy analogies. 

Sadly, I'm far from well-versed in Buddhism. As I learned while looking up evidence to support my claims of its influence.   It's something I hope to fix someday.

On the other hand, I've found that while there are parallels to be made with real world religions, the Qun is really, really weird.

EDIT: "Suffering is a choice, and we can refuse it. It is in our power to create the world, or destroy it." I guess the Qunari's solution to sapient suffering is to re-define it? 

Bioware's really done a fantastic job with the religious writings, though. I think Kirby is behind most of the Chant. If you can get me pumped up by a religious text in a video game, you're doing your job right.  Do we know who's the writer who handles the Qun, or do they all work on that one?

I'm no expert either! I'm really interested in Buddhism, but it's so wide and with so many branches that I'm sure I'm always missing something.

 

I think maybe the Qunari's relation to Buddhism is also that they are completly focused on their tasks and their present existence, without caring for a next life or a beyond. But I'm with you: the Qun is really weird and maybe the intention was precisely to make a completely alien culture, that can't be understood by any clear references to what we already know. Perhaps that is why they have Bull saying that he would have to use a lot of Qunari words to explain his fear coping technique and you probably wouldn't understand anyway.

June's, mostly because I thought it looked pretty. She never had any strong attachment to a particular god.

 

4. How old is your Lavellan?

5. Did you intend to romance Solas when you started the game?

Yes. I was interested in his character based on his description, and since I planned to play an elf it seemed like a good match. But I decided for sure to romance him when I saw that trailer where he grabs the inquisitor's hand to close the breach, because I realized he was probably a more plot-relevant character than I'd expected. Plus it was kinda hot.

 

6. What is your Lavellan's relationship with her clan?

She's always been a bit of a (snarky) loner, so she enjoyed traveling on her own to spy on the conclave. Now that she's learned so much about elven history, she no longer feels as connected to her clan. But she still loves them, because they're her family.

 

7. What are your Lavellan's religious views?

She always believed in the elven gods, but her opinions have changed about their role in elven history. Now that she's met Mythal, she's found herself agreeing with Solas's opinion that they were not actually gods.

 

8. Did your Lavellan drink from the Well?

Yes. She has a thirst for knowledge.

 

9. Did your Lavellan have Solas remove the vallaslin and why/why not?

Yes, she had him remove them. She was beginning to feel distant from her clan, and Dalish in general, after learning so much about elven history. Removing the vallaslin felt like a natural step for her at the time. Now that Solas is gone, she feels even more isolated, like she doesn't fit in with the Dalish or city elves anymore.

 

10. What response did you choose after Solas broke up with you?

Sad puppy, all the way. She'd never felt so vulnerable.

 

11. How is your Lavellan taking Solas being gone and how are you taking it?

She was shocked that he left, even though she knew something was wrong because of the suddenness of the breakup. But she loves him, and she misses him. He still called her Vhenan as he walked away, so she's pretty sure he still loves her. She wants to understand what happened, and she'd like to reconcile.

 

I was shocked when it happened, too. I wasn't spoiled, so I really wasn't expecting it.

 

12. What would you give for a Wolf Hunt DLC?

Cookies? Muffins? Cupcakes? Anything?

Within the inquisition, Dorian, Cole, and Cassandra. They've been through a lot together, and they've become her best friends. She doesn't feel like her clan would understand her anymore.

Fennel Lavellan, because I can't be trusted to name my own characters. I even thought, while brushing up on elven lore pre-release, that her name was kind of similar to Fen'Harel--but it wouldn't matter, because it's not like he'd be in the game, and there was that Fenarel guy in DA:O/DAII anyway. Then all of the weird wolf hints about Solas started popping up and then I got to the end. Now I'm kind of worried people will think I did it on purpose, but I had her name planned before July, even... IT'S A CUTE HERB NAME, OKAY.

 

2. What is your Lavellan's class?

Mage! Rift Mage specialization, because it suited her and I really like some of the spells you get. ...even if it seemed kind of silly to have two in the same party sometimes.

3. Which god's vallaslin does your Lavellan use?

Mythal--the biggest one. I liked how it looked like a tree...

4. How old is your Lavellan?

23ish.

5. Did you intend to romance Solas when you started the game?

Yep!

6. What is your Lavellan's relationship with her clan?

She loves them a lot; they're her family. She does feel a little distant from them, though. (For headcanon reasons--her mother was a city elf and doesn't share some of the typical Dalish beliefs, which Fennel kind of "inherited.")

7. What are your Lavellan's religious views?

Speaking of typical Dalish beliefs! Fennel is probably more agnostic than a First should be at the start of the game. To her, the Creators probably existed (and if anyone asked her, she'd likely tell them she believes in them without elaborating), but there's no way to be sure. Same with the Maker, though pre-Inquisition she'd probably rather believe in the Creators than the Maker. Post-Inquisition, she definitely believes the Creators exist(ed), but hasn't quite sorted out her thoughts beyond that yet. The Maker and any other gods are still in the nebulous "maybe?" area, for now. She'd need proof or a trusted source of information before believing anything 100%.

8. Did your Lavellan drink from the Well?

Nope. Being bound to anyone/anything sounds terrible to her--she really values her free will.

9. Did your Lavellan have Solas remove the vallaslin and why/why not?

Yes. The idea that she'd been ignorantly wearing slave markings was kind of abhorrent to her--it'd be one thing if the Dalish knew and they had reclaimed it, but if that was what happened, the meaning got lost somewhere (obviously). She's fine with changing things in her life due to new information and she trusted that Solas was telling the truth, so she was more than okay with it being removed. (Until she runs into another Dalish elf, probably... because that's going to be weird.)

10. What response did you choose after Solas broke up with you?

The sad ones. Normally she's pretty cheery and handles things "better," but it completely blindsided her and she was really upset about it because she loved Solas and didn't understand why he was doing this. :c

11. How is your Lavellan taking Solas being gone and how are you taking it?

She's worried about him and curious about why he left. Everything was not made clear after defeating Corypheus and she really wants to know what the hell is going on. :| She's probably hanging out with Dagna and Dorian a lot and talking about weird nerdy magic/Fade things with them now that Solas isn't there anymore...

 

As for me, I'm still thinking about it even though it's almost been two months since I finished the game, so... that's weird. I've come to realize Solas is one of my favourite DA characters (tied with Morrigan) and if anything bad happens to him I'm going to be really upset, especially if we have to hurt him ourselves (which I don't think I'd be able to do :c).

 

12. What would you give for a Wolf Hunt DLC?

This is Flemeth from the previous two games. In this game, Flemeth's story comes to a head – she knew that Solas would summon her, and that he would need to steal her power to further his plans. She knew that because they are both elven gods... yet Solas has slept for a thousand years and his power dwindled, while she was killed long ago and a spark escaped from her into the body she now holds. She has nurtured that spark, and knew that Solas would need it. He was once her oldest friend, but she knows that in his drive to restore the elven people he will kill anyone – even her. She intends to let him have the power, so long as she can pass the essence of her god-hood onto Morrigan, a gift Flemeth had always planned for her daughter yet one Morrigan misunderstood as hostile possession.

 

I don't like the sound of THIS particular sentence!
It sounds to me like Solas is becoming another "stereotype villain", who will never question his goals/beliefs.
If he is going to be a villain I thought him to be a likeable, complicated anti-hero, - instead of me stumbling through a future DA4 and be like:
'Yep, another obviously villain with obviously evil intentions!' - like the majority thought about Cory/Meredith/..

 

Meh, he has so much potential for more...  

I would be totally fine if he wants to restore the magic as it was with all the other races in it (not elves only)
but that just sounds dreary...

Anriel but only a few people know her by that name.

2. What is your Lavellan's class?

Mage - Knight Enchanter. She would have liked to learn more about rift magic but went with the more practical choice.

3. Which god's vallaslin does your Lavellan use?

She chose Mythal as a promise to her clan to be their protector. 

4. How old is your Lavellan?

28.

5. Did you intend to romance Solas when you started the game?

Yes I can't resist an elf romance (except Sera's I'm not going to be doing that one anytime soon if ever).

6. What is your Lavellan's relationship with her clan?

She loves them and misses them horribly. She misses life among them, surviving wasn't always easy but she's more isolated as the Inquisitor and that wears on her. 

7. What are your Lavellan's religious views?

She worshipped the Creators because that's part of the lifestyle in the clan. She keeps to some of the rituals and ceremonies because they're comforting and she refuses to stop being Dalish just because it would make things easier but events have left her wondering what is a God? And she's not sure if there is such a thing as a divine being.  

8. Did your Lavellan drink from the Well?

Yes even sensing the gaes attached to it she didn't trust Morrigan not to twist the Well's information to suit her needs rather than the Inquisition's.

9. Did your Lavellan have Solas remove the vallaslin and why/why not?

When he offered she had a moment of realisation that the Arlathan elves DID NOT MATTER. To the dalish the vallaslin is an act of defiance and dedication and she would wear hers with pride. But the implication of Arlathan having slave markings haunted her so she re-examined the stories and the history the dalish have gathered with this new angle in mind.

10. What response did you choose after Solas broke up with you?

She told him she loved him and begged him not to leave her. That she did lashes at her pride and it's a relief when he leaves. 

11. How is your Lavellan taking Solas being gone and how are you taking it?

She's relieved in a way, seeing him everyday and pretending to be fine was difficult but she does miss him and avoids going to the lower level of the rotunda.

12. Her closest non-romantic relationships?

Jaha the mage she grew up with, despite not being named First or even Second in clan Lavellan he was the one they sent to clan Sabrae to be their new First (halla and apprentice Second to follow).

In the Inquisition it's Dorian, he doesn't treat her like a special snowflake, he's a friend not a follower and most importantly she doesn't feel he's using her for something.    

13. What animal would represent her?

A white wolf, the alpha female of the pack.

This sassy minx name is Hildrana Lavellan. 
The love of her life is Solas and her Team of Thunder are Dorian, Iron Bull and Sara. Cole comes along reluctantly but he's an honorary member. Also we invite Cassandra and Vivienne for the disapproves.

 

2. What is your Lavellan's class?
She's a Mage and a badass Knight-Enchanter. She likes to get into the nitty-gritty of battle. 

 

3. Which god's vallaslin does your Lavellan use?
June's alternate version. She's crafty.

 

4. How old is your Lavellan?
27. I figured I'd give her my age. Seemed right enough.

 

5. Did you intend to romance Solas when you started the game?
Yes, because Lavellan was my second playthrough. I was split between Solas and Cullen my first time but I had a Human Inquisitor so the choice was made for me!

 

6. What is your Lavellan's relationship with her clan?
She's very close with her Clan. Considers the Keeper a mother-teacher figure and I have a background story where she has an older brother who became First when she left the Clan for the Inquisition. 

 

7. What are your Lavellan's religious views?
She's interested in restoring her culture. I think she's open minded to any ideas in regards to deities but not really a "religious" person per say. I think for her the past is more interesting at an academic level than a spiritual one. 

 

8. Did your Lavellan drink from the Well?
LOL. Yes. Even though she wants to find out more about her people's past, she doesn't wish to go back in time but rather move forward with new solutions. In order to do so, learning about the past seemed important. On the other hand, she's terrified especially because Solas warning is still ringing in her ears. Oops!

 

9. Did your Lavellan have Solas remove the vallaslin and why/why not?
Yes. She believed Solas and he would know how important it was to have her face marked while growing up but she can't see herself keeping the Vallaslin after what he told her. She's all about new beginnings! She also got really drunk that night with Team Thunder. Rough doesn't cover it. 

 

10. What response did you choose after Solas broke up with you?
LMAO. Anger, ok?! She was like, "Solas, I will feed you to Blighted Wolves! Come back here." Yeah, real classy.

 

11. How is your Lavellan taking Solas being gone and how are you taking it?
Anger and determination are what keeps her going. She's gathering information and researching for any clues where he might have gone. Cole is proving to be specially helpful even though he seems to have forgotten some things about Solas.

 

12. What would you give for a Wolf Hunt DLC?
