I just don't think he's racist.  Not as much as people make him out to be.  I feel strongly about words like 'racist'.  People tend to use them too lightly?  Sorry, I'm not expressing myself well.  Solas is just... fairly terrible at dealing with actual people.  He's used to spirits that embody one trait over everything else.  He's used to a time where elves were different.  He's been asleep for 1000+ years.  He's been able to see the world through dreams but not interact with it.

 

EDIT: I'm not saying that this excuses some of the things he says, just that it makes it more complex than 'oh he's racist'.

I'm curious, if Solas basically handed Corypheus his orb, why didn't he acknowledge his presence in your party (if you had Solas with you) every time you encountered him? I mean wouldn't Cory recognize him? Did he give it to him in disguise? Or like... what?

 

Edit: also if not him, what about the magic? Someone as powerful as Corypheus should be able to recognize the power of the orb and the power of that nondescript elven mage are connected or similar.

Agreed.  He gets along well with my Adaar because they tend to agree on the big things: freedom, being decent people, not keeping the Wardens around, etc.  But Adaar is a practical dude, and I've had the opportunity to argue with Solas about spirits, elves, and magic.  I honestly think the non-flirt options that disagree with Solas are more challenging and illuminate more of his character than some of the flirt options.  He doesn't even disapprove that much if you argue, as long as you're not a dick about it.

 

My best friend calls his balcony scene the "racist compliment speech" and she's joking, but only kind of   For all his talk of freedom and caring about people and not judging HIM by his pointy ears, he can be a deeply prejudiced man.  It's why I hope for a reasonably decent ending with Solas if you befriended him too, not just for the romance.  I'd like to think that friend!quizzy forces him to reexamine his beliefs too.  Adaar is going to miss his weird, socially awkward Fade bro.

Honestly? It's more complicated than that. Especially when you look at the Qunari. You can't really apply "racist" to a fantasy context when in the real world "race" means something very different.

 

I mean, Iron Bull says essentially the same thing about the Qunari that Solas does (i.e. most of them are either violent or living under the Qun). Yes, Iron Bull has basically been brainwashed by his religion into believing this is true, but that's the point. So have the other Tal-Vashoth. In fact, in a banter with Iron Bull, Solas points towards said brainwashing as the reason why most Tal-Vashoth are violent. So a structural rather than an inherent sort of thing. And that's not "racist" at all. So stating that "most of your people are violent or living under the Qun" is pretty much a statement of fact.

Mythal being murdered wouldn't mean as much if the gods were hopping bodies all the time anyway. It was a significant event in that it was a blow against one of the divine authorities, and that it removed seemingly one of the only stabilizing influences on the pantheon. 

 

Mythal being murdered is actually very, very bad.  By all appearances, the strength of the part of a sentient being's soul that is on this side of the veil (the Will that is in the physical Blood) can be considered its own "thing" to some degree, connected but fundamentally distinct from the "fade shadow" on the far side of the veil.

 

A bit of cut and paste:  this is the OGS, in Archdemon terms.   Its strength seems intimately tied to how easy it is to pass through the veil.  OGSes, being among the strongest and most "complete" in Thedas, require very, very thin veil to pass: explaining why Andruil could only be restored to mortal form (Sera) at the demon-ridden orphanage in Denerim, and why Sandal (June) was discovered near enormous amounts of raw lyrium in the Deep Roads.  It also explains why Warden-death is required to force an Archdemon soul's into the fade, as the Warden's half-blighted, half-virtuous human soul acts to grab the OGS and pull it along. 

 

Mythal, as one the most powerful spirits in existence, cannot pass through the veil at all.  Consequently, if she dies without another willing host immediately available, her spirit is trapped on the physical side of the veil, unable to pass through.  Solas-as-Falon'Din can't help guide her to another body even if he wanted to, so, she's forced to wait helplessly as ages pass until she (or Solas) is able to convince a physical entity to willingly take her in.  (Andraste, Flemeth, etc.)

I was going to say, "But he is racist, he believes ancient elves are better than everyone else". But while I was typing that, I realized that wasn't the case. He does wax poetic about Arlathan, but that doesn't exactly mean he thinks that the people before were better than the people now. Yes, he thinks things could be better now, but he does acknowledge that there were a lot of awful things in the past as well. He even tells Dorian to stop being all dreamy about Arlathan. As to spirits, they aren't better than people either just because they're spirits. All he says is any spirit is just as important and alive as any person.

 

My Team Optimism flag just went way the hell up. I really don't think he's about to go restoring the old pantheon or Arlathan, people.

Something about interesting people find interesting dreams so to see interesting things you must become interesting?

Re: Solas's ruthlessness

 

I think it really depends on how much he knew about Corypheus, both his plans and his identity, before giving the orb. I think he didn't know about the body-hopping. But did he know Cory was also going to attack the Conclave and the Divine? I'm personally leaning towards yes, because he does show up immediately after it happens, so he must have been somewhere nearby. Now of course, he could have been trying to retrieve the orb even then, but it could also be that he decided to watch first, thinking the Divine's life was worth activating the orb. It was the Breach that was unexpected.

I always had the idea that he was just kind of trailing along after Corypheus and waiting for a chance to get the orb back after Corypheus activated it. I'm not actually convinced Solas knew exactly what Cory's plans to activate the orb were, but I think he was probably expecting whatever Cory did to result in Cory getting killed in the process.

Yes, 'prejudice' is a better word.  Solas just strikes me as being a complete shut in who never really interacts with the world (because of the whole 'being asleep' thing).  He knows the world has changed but he's not ever really experienced this change.  And he spends all his time hanging out with uncomplex spirits.  He's less 'racist grandpa' and more 'socially awkward nerd who stands in the corner at parties and criticises people too loudly.'

My personal answers are under spoiler tags for space saving If enough people reply with their own feedback I'll tally up the answers to see which choices won the popularity contest.
You can choose your first, canon, or favorite play through if you have multiple Lavellans.

 

I haven't gone quite as indepth with my female Lavellan as I have my male one because I need to replay her (rushed through my first game). But here is what I have so far.

I went for same as me, mid twenties. She has such a baby face though. I wanted her to be all bit naive and sweet. 

5. Did you intend to romance Solas when you started the game?

Yes. He was always my planned first run romance. Did not disappoint. 

6. What is your Lavellan's relationship with her clan?

The total opposite of my Male Lavellan. She is on good terms. Loves them dearly and would do anything for them. She aspires to be a Keeper they'd be proud to have.

She is a first for me. A totally dedicate believer of the Dalish faith. Of course by the end of DAI she's starting to question everything. Poor sweet Niamh, she has a rough time.

8. Did your Lavellan drink from the Well?

My first run did not because I was freaked out that something awful would happen. But I think in my canon run she will. My male didn't because it didn't suit him (he's all about building a better future, not dredging up the past) but it's way more in character for her to. She's a huge bookworm, wants to know her history and is not about to give up her heritage to Morrigan.

9. Did your Lavellan have Solas remove the vallaslin and why/why not?

I did the first time, and I possibly will this time, because I'm weak and hearing Solas say 'I'm so sorry for causing you pain. It was selfish of me. I look at you, and I see what you truly are... and you deserve better than what those cruel marks represent' just breaks me. Of course the first time I didn't know he was going to dump me after. Ahaaaa, crushing blow. Still, it fits the headcannon I'm building for my Lavellan to fall so hard and get swept up in the tides of Solas. I won't let hindsight change this outcome. She will be bare faced and ALL ALONE. 

10. What response did you choose after Solas broke up with you?

I went for the I love you response the first time. I don't want that for my canon run because I want to make my Lavellan a lot less weepy and a lot more fierce so I will come to love her as much as I do my male Lavellan. So it'd be that Don't do this to me respone next time.

11. How is your Lavellan taking Solas being gone and how are you taking it?

I have a headcannon running for my male Lavellan that I want to give to her as well. That last unfinished part of Solas's mural -- during those moments where she finds her mind wandering to her lost companion, usually in the dead of night when all of the day's distractions have gone silent; she picks up a paintbrush and she works on finishing it. Her own little piece of closure for her missing friend. 

12. What would you give for a Wolf Hunt DLC?

EVERYTHING. Bring my Elven brother back to Tristan Lavellan, and let Niamh Lavellan know the truth. THEY DESERVE IT.

Do you think the Inquisitor told anyone about Mythal?

I always assumed they would just come bursting back into Skyhold all like 'Holy ****balls, you'll never guess who I just met!' and yet the lack of conversation on it makes me wonder. It is more than likely just down to time that it wasn't put in, but it got me thinking. Would my Lavellan so readily tell everyone, most of who are Andrastian, that they just met one of their Gods and she's currently hanging out in the body of Morrigans mother? It annoys me when Sera is all 'you are the Herald of Andraste, you can't believe in your elven gods, blah blah' but then I think, at least she's got the stones to actually be upfront in that opinion. She probably isn't alone in thinking it afterall. 

For my Tristan Lavellan, I just can't imagine it would go down well after his constant talk of not believing, not being the Herald and general anti-chantry views to then turn around and be all 'Hey, you know this tattoo on my face? I just met the God it's for. SHE'S REAL. WHERE IS YOU MAKER NOW!?' 

  Ok, those wouldn't be his exact words. But I can't imagine how the heck he'd slip that into conversation, even with his beloved Dorian or Solas bro. The whole situation is totally batshizz, even by giant ancient magister tearing open the sky standards.

All I can headcannon in that scenario, is that after walking out of the eluvian he went into the tavern and got totally rat-arsed. 

 

 

Also, I've somehow run out of likes and it's only 4pm. Y U DO THIS BSN!? I HAVE MANY POSTS HERE TO LIKE STILL.

Is it canon that the gods body-hopped all the time, or is that something that came from fans?  My take on it is that Mythal's one and only physical body was killed and her spirit exists by cohabiting with others (don't want to use 'possessing' . 'A soul cannot be forced on the unwilling', after all).  Since the ancient elves were immortal and other races are not, the only way for Mythal to surive is to switch bodies when they wear out.

That's how I took it, too. The only reason Mythal was body hopping was, to my understanding, because she was murdered but managed to save her soul through finding a willing host body.

I really want to get out my Team Optimism flag...but, as I was trying to catch up on the thread, I noticed a few people had mentioned something about maybe Solas having to be locked away for the other gods to come out or maybe he will have to die. This is why he fears dying alone. I don't know why, but this just seems highly possible to me. I keep trying to come up with ways that Gaider and Weekes could make him have a happy story and I just can't come up with anything.

I curse the day Weekes picked up a pen!

Can someone post a happy picture or something to pull me back onto Team Optimism? Better yet, give me some possibilities as to why Solas will live and be happy.

I really like this idea, as it is devious in a Fen'Harel way... But keep getting stuck on Solas telling you that he never would have believed a Tevinter magister could unlock the orb. So either he's lying directly, or he gave it to Corypheus to do something other than unlock it. But what?

Warrior (sword + shield) - usually I have elven mage and wanted to make something different.

Ghilan'nain but I didn't know it at the time - it was chosen because of its simplicity. Now I think it goes so well with how I can imagine her personality etc. Also according to relationship with Solas they were like methaphor of wolf and halla for me.

4. How old is your Lavellan?

About 30

5. Did you intend to romance Solas when you started the game?

No, but soon he started to be very intriguing for me because from the start he was contrary in all discussions (I'm not sure if this is exactly what I meant but my English is not perfect ;-) )

6. What is your Lavellan's relationship with her clan?

As a warrior she was perceived as one of the protectors of the clan, but on the other hand she wanted something more than just living according to all the clan's rules. I imagine that there was a reason why she was sent as a spy - it was just an official reason but the clan's keeper wanted to allow her to leave the life which wasn't fully satisfying for her and find her meaning of life.

7. What are your Lavellan's religious views?

At the beginning, she believes in the elven gods in a typically Dalish way, because this is all she learned during her life so far. She's open minded and curious, so all the relationships with others are giving her wider view on this subject.

8. Did your Lavellan drink from the Well?

No, but that was a difficult decision for her.

9. Did your Lavellan have Solas remove the vallaslin and why/why not?

She let him remove it. She rusted Solas and for her all his knowledge he shared with her was the proof that her feelings were right when she didn't want to just stay with her clan forever.

10. What response did you choose after Solas broke up with you?

She was a typical 'sad puppy' ;-) That was some sign of how much she loved him because normally she doesn't behave like this - she's a warrior, rather not showing her feelings much.

11. How is your Lavellan taking Solas being gone and how are you taking it?
She doesn't understand why he did it, and feels devastated and depressed. It ruined her strenght and hope of finally finding her place in life after leaving her clan. I think she has some hope that he will return and at least explain himself, especially after his last words that what they had was real.

I really expected to get another cutscene with Solas after meeting Flemeth, even if it was post-breakup. But ehhh. Dev't limits, I guess. I just headcanon he and my Lavellan did talk about it, since she did take him along to get the dragon after all.
