I never thought she did it on purpose, just without thinking.

Yes, of course, my English is bad, it's hard to explain sometimes

I guess my question is how did that situation come about?

Why am I in control of a train and why is my loved one and four strangers tied to the tracks?

The answer would heavily influence my actions.

Your loved one has broccoli. The strangers have ice cream.

Just watched a video of the end cutscene. It does go back to regular green ones the Inquisitor gets hold of it. It ALSO stays intact after s/he drops it, and it is clearly whole on the ground while s/he is walking towards Corypheus. Rocks start falling after he gets sucked into the Fade, and presumably after that is when the orb is broken. Once again Solas. Why couldn't you pick up the thing while Inquisitor was busy with Corypheus?

I wonder if that's because when the Inquisitor touches it, he/she took a lot of its power.  Corypheus had no choice but to use his own powers, blight magic, to make up for what was lost.

And then of course using magic that was not of the orb's nature corrupted it.  Then like Mims suggested, it caused tiny invisible fractures within the orb.

hrmm

edit:  It did go back to green once the Inquisitor got control of it.

I thought it did, interesting.  I think I always took that to mean, green = fade magic, red = blight magic.

The magic around Justina is red...

Could it be that the sacrifice of Justina and the death of the people in Haven is what turns the orb's magic red rather than the blight? While Cory holds it he keeps the power of the sacrifice inside the orb but once it's in the Inquisitor's possession that power is lost and that sudden shift is what causes the orb to crack.

Though I do feel cinematically it should have landed at the Inquisitor's feet and then we see it crack and brake.

I suppose he could have, and it could have broken in his hands...spent, weakened.

Entirely off topic, but for those of you who are brave and want to tweak your Inquisitor's faces after the CC there is a hacky tool someone posted in the DAI Tools forum to allow you to do so. Posted last Friday, so I could consider it alpha build, but it apparently works.

Ah good point.

It could be a combination of all of these things that caused the orb to break.  Or it could be that rocks fell on it.  I do think though that once it was used up the Inquisitor was not able to hold onto it anymore, I don't think they could have stopped it from dropping.  The sound when it hit the ground, dang that thing must have been heavy.

If the orb is as big as that cup Iron Bull gets you to drink out of, I'm not surprised it was too heavy to hold onto after there's no power left to levitate it.

GUYS. IDEA. I keep going back to Dorian's discussion with Solas about the orb and its meaning in ancient Tevinter texts.

Maybe... Maybe they ACTUALLY contain a part of the Fade - the place and stuff of dreams. Like a portion of the fade has been compressed, condensed, and placed in the orb that the person wielding it can call upon for more power.
What do we know about magic in the Dragon Age universe already? It comes from the Fade. The mage pulls energy from the fade, through the veil, and into reality - manifesting in magic. In that way, they pull from their dreams and make them a reality.
The act of pulling energy from the fade costs mana or energy from the mage itself, limiting the number of spells they can cast and the size/ power of the spell. However, should they have a somnaborium or orb, the portion of the fade they're calling upon already exists on this part of the veil. It's like Google Fiber. For magic. It increases the speed at which magic can be brought across the veil and enhances the magical power of the user exponentially.
EDIT: So yeah. It literally allows your dreams, through your will, to become reality.

That is a very cool thought. It definitely seems possible. If you were an entity in the possession of an orb like that, you'd certainly seem godlike. You're basically increasing your 'bucket capacity' for magic. You'd be able to process it quicker and faster without losing energy, and contain any of the dangerous power fluctuations inside the orb itself.

It goes well with the theory that the veil might have been constructed as an 'exploit'. The wall stops any other mages from excelling beyond you, because they physically can't. Meanwhile, anyone in possession of these orb keys can mainline magic like no one's business. If the elven gods were simply immortal magisters, I could definitely see them having created a system like that to maintain the illusion of being all powerful.

Very nice theorizing... I think you could be on to something, and it fits thematically. There is always a system for rulers to limit potential rivals/competition. You can't have an empire with out it. The Andrastian lands all have the Circle/Templar system to limit their mages. And so does Tevinter (the line of what is acceptable is just different there). But if magic was widespread in ancient times among a population, you couldn't just round them all up in circles, so how could you control and limit mages? Explains why this would be attributed to the Maker as well.

Wonder how many Solavellan's did Thanes romance.

/eyes you masochists

My first ME3 run was a Thane romancer. First and only time I have actually cried at a videogame (I was crushed after Mordin and then so soon after, dat damn prayer for you. Argh. It just all built up and broke me right there. Then I couldn't stop bloody laughing at myself.)

In my first run of DAO I romanced Alistair, kept him as a warden, didn't do the DR and then took him with me to fight the Archdemon. Yeah. Good times.

In DA2 my first proper start to finish romance was with Anders.

Then of course my first DAI playthrough was romancing Solas, and y'all know how well that turns out.

Yeah.

Me and Bioware romances. It's been a total laugh riot.

(I should note that my canon for each of those games is now Garrus, Zevran, Fenris and so help me Bioware, if Solas isn't going to get any better then Dorian will be my canon. He's joint at the moment but he will become number one IF YOU DON'T HEAL THESE WOUNDS.)

Also, boo because just as I got all my likes back I used them all up again.

I always thought it was maybe too heavy, or really hot, and the Inquisitor couldn't hold onto it anymore without the power helping to levitate it. At least, that's what made sense in my mind. :P And whether she wanted to retrieve it or not, or call Solas over to it, rocks started to fall and things got shaky. And, well, broken orb.

SOLAS: Do you even lift?

(Sorry but it was wide open for that)

Spoiler

I like this chart. This is my favorite chart. Sometimes chart has exceptions where one step swaps positions but otherwise is a correct chart.

Hmm... Actually this whole discussion has me pondering the orb nature. I'm starting to think that maybe, It was like, well,  something sort of like the idea posted before: an elven demi-god Duracell. Something they charged up before Uthenera that allowed them a quick jump start to their full potential upon waking up. Except Solas slept too long. Couldn't even manage to tap into his orb, but he learned of an ancient with enough power and enough stupid that could and would activate it ASAP. So he has the orb and a hint at its nature delivered into Cory's hands, follows at a distance and waits. He expects the anti-theft mechanism to melt the bastard's face off once its active and then he can just swoop in and recharge himself.

Except, there's a part of Cory's plan that Solas wasn't aware of. The whole Divine Intervention thing stops the orb from obliterating the not-Fen'harel holding it, and then there's the Divine interception pass to our Intruding Inquisitor.

We pick up green glowy thing because, you know, who wouldn't? It starts recharging us with Fen'harel's power. Except it hurts, so we drop it. Connections get severed, twisted three ways. It doesn't work like that. Orb turns red. Boom.

This could explain why he insists that Lavellan will understand, and everything will be made clear once they defeat Coryphelus. He is counting on being able to retrieve the orb intact, fix the red, and regain all of the power that he had lost. He'd be able to show us who he is then, because maybe just saying "I'm Fen'harel, the demi-god from your Dalish legends" isn't enough. After all, we met him as a low level apostate, and that could be a reason he chickens out of telling us. He opts for the lesser truth, to gauge our reaction, but his hesitation costs him his resolve, and how can he stay with us when the larger truth may be so much more devastating? Not just to Lavellan, but to whatever he's planning.

Instead, the orb gets smashed. Broken. All that's left of his power in the world sits in the palm of our hands. The only way for him to get his spark back would be to take it from us, ending our lives.  He made us who we are, however. Even a hated inquisitor is someone he helped put in place. Remember the chess game with Bull? We have become part of his endgame. To kill us now would require a contingency plan that he may not have concocted yet. And a Lavellan whom he is in love with? Well. Maybe he isn't actually willing to kill anyone who stands in the way of his goal.

It's a good thing he found out Mythal was still kicking around... eh?

And this is why a small part of me thinks he'll end up killing himself if you romanced him.  He couldn't bring himself to kill Lavellan.  Mythal's power is as much a part of him as his heart - as she would say.

Stupid fool. Just go home and read a book in your pajamas and scowl at Sera like the grumpy old man you are.

*grabs theory*

*stuffs it into her head*

Yessss, I like this.  This is good.  Wish I could wrap my head around exactly how that actually would work, though.  Almost certainly raw lyrium in the core, surrounded by something that made it handleable, non-toxic to the mage user.

Also, wish Meredith turning into a statue of red lyrium made more sense to me.  She tried to draw so much fade through that the corresponding Will required to complete the attempted spell turned her entire being into Song?  I... guess...?

*baffled shrug*
