Ok, this is a much better term. Anyway, it's funny because it turns out that the author I was worried about was actually not offended by me at all. So I guess I was indeed tactful in my small critique. That is a relief.

It's kinda weird, because on one hand, I very much value criticism.  You get better from all feedback, but you get better faster from the feedback that points out where you're weak.  And I don't think living in a fandom echo chamber does anybody any good, though that's admittedly an extreme example.

On the other hand, I just...don't have the emotional capacity for fandom spats.  If I know that even a tactful and useful critique won't go over well, I don't bother.  If I know that a particular genre or fic style is not my type (time travel for example), I don't bother.  Do I miss out on some interesting fanfiction this way?  Probably, but I'm lazy  And fully aware that I'm being a touch hypocritical.

It's perfectly reasonable to expect people to be courteous and thoughtful toward you, yes even on the big bad Internet.  There's no reason to be a jerk just because you're hiding your identity.  But it is IMO unreasonable to expect everyone who interacts with you to like and/or agree with you. That's not just an Internet thing, or a fandom thing.  That's a basic life thing.  There's no maliciousness behind it, or condescension.  It's just part of interacting as a social species.

<3

I have a family member that really could stand to learn that lesson.  Yep ok say whatever you want, it's your FB status.  But if you don't want people to react negatively when you say something that crosses a line, then don't say anything publicly in the first place.  No one judged or attacked you.  You took a ridiculous stance that just makes you look like an insensitive, entitled ass.  This is a person that uses the "how dare you judge me and attack me" any and every time you disagree with something they've said.

Oh boy I love the day after a federal election.  People are just so kind and compassionate.

In defense of any and all fanfic anywhere: This is something people usually do for free in their spare time, it's purely a labor of love. I don't demand as much once I have stared at a screen blackly for thirdy minutes at 2 am, because this is when I found the time to write something after a day full of work, and my brain is fried, my eyes just want to close, but I still want to do this, damnit.

Apart from the occasional beta readers (also volunteers!), fanfic writers lack the support system of agents/editors/publishers to make a finished, polished product. And even when this support is present, the final product will never make everyone happy. It just can't. People have such different tastes, just think of all the criticism voiced at Bioware writers.

Finally, this is purely from experience of getting a non-fiction piece of text published, but the amount of time and effort to remove those last few annoying details to make a polished product is astronomical compared to the amount of time required to just write something.

I know, I know. :|  I should probably go easier on fanfic writers than I do, because there's basically no quality control and it's amazing that they make as much as they do (And agreed on editing being far more difficult than the initial write-up, especially if you have to wait a while for feedback and, by the time it's come, you're over that story and moved onto another one) But after playing the editor so much, both in an official capacity and as a casual thing between peers or friends, it's gotten difficult to flip the switch back off.  And it gets especially frustrating to see the same problems and issues over and over again.

But I'll... try to tone it down a little. And maybe vent in private.  :P

*shrug* I like listening to other people's perspectives on fandom.  I've been doing fandom of some kind or another since I was 14, so it's good to be reminded that it's this weird social bubble that follows really unusual rules

I still twitch whenever I see consistent punctuation errors.  You can thank my 10th grade English teacher for that  But you know what?  Not my problem unless I'm a beta, and now it minimally impedes my ability to enjoy a fic.

Well as good as Feynite's fanfics are, they are not perfect and they haven't been edited so there will be criticism sooner or later. Once in a while, I notice a sentence that seems a bit long, but that's too minor to point out.

Nooo! I like discussing writing quality, especially with varying view points! It's so boring if I write a giant rant on something and all I get in return is "I agree." And Eivuwan's made some good points!

NO! It's not better at all! We have to actively think about them, because they can have significant influence on our health. Some of these bugs are really helpful, some are harmful, and maintaining a balance can make the difference between health and disease, or how severe the disease is. Microbes are very important!

Considering that her fanfiction seems to be a "stream of consciousness" type of thing (spontaneously written, with not many substantial edits, even if thought out in her head) I can't help being impressed with her writing - I just wouldn't be able to do this without eventually eating my tail. I'm the perfectionist type who spends way too much time obsessing over details and have tendency to run around in circles.

In any case, I can see flaws and issues, but I can't say I feel the same about Lavellan as some here do. Yes, sometimes she can be unfair towards, say, young!Solas and the elves, but that's the point. She's literally put in Solas's shoes and she reacts near identically to him, if not worse (which I am not surprised by, the woman has suffered through the destruction of everything she loved and didn't have a millenia-old nap to at least get over some of it. Let the girl get some things out of her system).

There's a reason why the fic is called Looking Glass (basically, mirror) after all :) - so yes, I read all her reactions and perhaps a bit of hypocrisy/kneejerk reaction as mostly intentional. As for the Author's Darling status... a bit, perhaps? Still, most of the things she's good at or ideas she has seem to be either well-explained by either her background or experience in life, or the nature of the world she's found herself in. I mean, we can talk about the issues of how much her Elvenhan or dwarves are anywhere close to canon, but she put quite a bit of thought for how at least HER ancient elves and dwarves work, I'll give her that.

Well, I do think Feynite plans out her plot ahead of time so it's more than a stream of consciousness. Also I'm an idiot. All this time, I thought Looking Glass was like a binocular. This makes a lot more sense. Although I guess the binocular thing makes sense too if you imagine that Lavellan is looking far more into the future compared to the Elvhen.

Because I'm still new to this, it's so hard, and people are incredibly perceptive to all sorts of flaws I wouldn't notice.

Around this time of day sleep deprivation can kick in and a tiny voice says, "TF, why do you even do this, drosophila? Come on, I know you want to give up and go to bed instead, because sleeping has 0.01% chance of failiure and embarrassing youself."
