Must say, I can't really see Solas in the same way after this thread. New game with my vashoth mage (), but I cringe every time I see him on the screen and can't meet his gaze whenever I have a cutscene specifically with him. Partially because I know what he's planning to do. Partially because I'm thinking of Lavellan. And partially because of the shameless enablers lurking in this thread

After my first playthrough (romanced), I couldn't talk to him on my next play-through. I think he doesn't like my Trevelyan because at the end she had the option to say she didn't care that he left.

.....that solo violin drowned out by the orchestra 'speaks' in the quiet parts also.....and in fact, you could almost say musically 'argues' with other violins.

 

It weakly argues, I might add. The tone is heavily strained, almost to the point of sounding like a violin being played bad. As compared to the tone of the other violins, which is beautiful, grand and joins the larger picture of the orchestra.

 

Even in the very beginning you have two violin solos....one that starts the progress of the whole piece at around 0:18 followed by one that 'argues' immediately afterwards at about 0:24. They converse again at about 2:11.

 

These two 'argue' in tone throughout the piece.....but the strained, weak opinion is drowned out by the orchestra while the beautiful, moving forward one joins. The orchestra is like the grand picture of the world.

 

......and to top it all off the weak one does one last plea at 3:42.

.....Morris....in my opinion.....created a musical conversation of what it must sound like when wisdom tries to reason with pride. Wisdom being the weak violin....Pride being the beautiful one.

 

Which is pretty much what is going on in Solas' head.

Aaaaand Lavellan's back to being an insufferable hypocrite. *Sigh* And we were doing so well for a while there. Seriously, she spends half the story lamenting her inability to kill Solas when she had the chance (Re: sacrifice her personal attachment for the greater good) calling it a personal failure on her part - but when Pride and Mythal start succeeding where she failed, suddenly they're jerks who need to either be stopped or shown the light. Uh-huh. Nevermind that as Inquisitior, she had to have made sacrifices herself. Hell, the game forces you to sacrifice someone in the Fade. But of course, Pride points out everything but this glaring hypocrisy. Can't have him make an argument that isn't full of holes, now can we? Lavellan might actually have to question her supposed moral superiority then. And treat him like a damned equal.

 

...I'm get snotty again, aren't I? I'm just... it was all going so well for a while. Pride was growing a goddamned backbone. Now we're back to the "Pride is always wrong and should just do whatever Lavellan tells him to" show. I hate that show. Needs to hire an editor. And get a better name.

 

The talk with Mythal was nice, though.

There is also the matter of being tactful and sensitive. Pride may have noticed the flaw in her logic, but it's not always the right thing to be so blunt when compassion just died. The difference between Mythal, Pride, and Lavellan is that it seems that the former two sacrificed people who do not want to be sacrificed whereas Lavellan was more acting in self-defence and her followers understood their responsibility and are willing to die for a common goal.

I'm kinda insecure about where I'm taking it? It is modern OC after all, a lot of people think you can't write a modern OC fic well, without having horrible crap happen to the main character every five seconds for "realism." 

 

It took me so long to get it to how I wanted it i'm kinda relieved it's over now, tbh. I mean it was like 8,000 words, but still. It gets easier, right? -3-

Solas' people also understood their responsibility and were willing to die for a common goal. And yet, she lists him sacrificing his people to "buy time for his plans to work" as similar to Mythal killing Compassion. So clearly even when it's a solider that's pledged themselves to your cause, it's still terrible to sacrifice them. Made doubly hypocritical in that the game forces you to do this very thing in the Arbor Wilds - feed your army against Corypheus so that they can clear a path to the temple and buy you time to find whatever's inside. Which means Lavellan's done the very thing she calls out Solas for, especially if she spent the time to do the rituals while her men died against Corypheus. 

 

As for Pride trying to consider her feelings - given that he snapped at her about it already within the chapter, I highly doubt he was just trying to spare her pain. Given how he wilted every time Lavellan made a response, I'm pretty sure we're supposed to see him as "changing" and "seeing the right way," which paints Lavellan as the arbiter of right and wrong in the story, which continues to be extremely grating. Not to mention how it diminishes Pride - everything he thinks or believes is invalid unless Lavellan agrees with it, and she must show him the true path. All take, no give - and frankly, Pride just deserves better than that.

 

It just goes back to what I brought up the first time - stuff like this just shows a blatant disrespect for the characters, not just for Solas and Pride now, but for Mythal, and really the whole of elven society as well. Mythal was the last scrap of moral nuance the story had. Now it's back to "agree with Lavellan or you're wrong."

  Breaks my heart all over again.  I've never been so moved by a game than Inquisition.  For me, it's a masterpiece in heartbreak.

Yes, that particular sacrifice was unnecessary. Which is why that particular sacrifice is what Lavellan should be calling out. Instead, she takes issue with the very idea - with the logic that Mythal and Pride are defending, not the sincerity of it. After all, when Pride goes on his little speech about how people have to set aside personal bonds when a problem is bigger than themselves - he immediately shuts up like he realizes he was wrong, and Lavellan goes "Well I don't agree with that philosophy!" like we're supposed to agree with her.

I have to admit, I didn't get the feeling that we should totally agree with Lavellan. Both parties appear as hurt and confused, trying to make sense of another tragedy among other tragedies.

 

Pride however didn't stop because he realizes he was wrong; he stops because he realizes this is pretty much exactly what Solas did - and what Solas did to Lavellan, specifically; and that's after he spends all days trying to wrap his head around his other self's actions and why they're so monstrous AND vehemently declaring that he wouldn't do anything like that to the world or Lavellan.

 

And not only he's absolutely terrified of becoming Solas, he probably begins to realize that he's been on that route without knowing it. It's a gut-wrenching personal realization, and not a conclusion to logical or philosophical argument.

 

Still - it's actually a philosophical/logical argument not just Feynite's putting into question, but Bioware themselves. We see question about how far necessary sacrifices "for the greater good" can go popping in DAI all the time - in case of Solas, in case of Leliana, in case of the Seekers, Chantry, etc., and I fully expect for a continuation of that in DA4.

 

Because it is a question we should be asking ourselves - and I don' t think Lavellan or Feynite argue about necessary sacrifices that have to happen sometimes, but when they're necessary and when it's just becoming a convenient excuse.

So the question in that part isn't about sacrifices and putting aside personal feelings in general, but indeed whether Mythal has crossed the line in that particular case.
