Merrill cares so deeply about elven history, about the culture, losses, people, about all aspects of it. She would want to know it all, start to finish, unabridged.

Solas would be there another thousand years before she ran out of questions.

New strategy: Bring Merrill to talk to Solas while the Inquisitor & co figure out how to stop his plan.

I'm stopping by to just throw a question out there, given the overlap of their themes: what do the people here think of Merrill?

She's a keeper.

Well seeing more of Merrill firsthand is literally about the only thing that interests me about DA2 so that should say something I suppose.

I had this feeling that someone would take issue, and yet I still made the joke. ಥ‿ಥ

To clarify my intent, in the name of humour, if Solas were the dad of the wolves in that hilarious gif set (which when expanded upon, could be interpreted as him telling the wolves to shut up), he would be a **** wolf dad. Therefore, when using shoddy logic to leap to a worst case conclusion coupled with Solas' less than fine attributes, we arrive at ****-dad-Solas.

If I'm being serious, however, if Solas existed in an alternate universe where he wasn't trying to Do The Thing, then yes, I agree he would be a thoughtful, loving parent. He might make some questionable decisions along the way (cough), but I'm sure his heart would be in the right place.

Oh no, no, no! No hurt feelings here whatsoever, I promise ^_^ It's just that I'm pretty new to the fandom and with the way you phrased it, I thought it was some kind of widely accepted fanon and got really confused.

What can I say, I love my villains/anti-heroes secretly being awesome parents and real marshmallows inside :P

About Merill I have sort of mixed feelings about her... She annoyed a lot during da2 but I loved how she cared so much for her people and ther culture... I think it may be hard to understand her during da2 in a way, but playing inqusition afterwards it clicks together when it comes to her at least that how it was for me. And I'm probably bad at explaning this... :pinched: but hey I tried! :D

I know a few people who couldn't tolerate Merrill til they played a Lavellan in DAI. (they never played Mahariel Wardens) they said they didn't.. How to say.. Essentially they didn't 'get' the dalish perspective til they not only played through a game as a dalish elf and experienced the da setting as one, but got emotionally invested in the dalish and their culture/problems as a result of playing said character. One of them still doesn't like her which is legit like we all have different opinions of the chars and its fine- but he said he at least now sees why she did the things she did and such. One of the reasons i enjoy the significant popularity of lavellans. :) iirc mahariel was not a popular origin at all

... Probably because nobody at that point knew much about ancient elves and their lost empire - or that we'd uncover so much 'elfy' stuff, including their still-living deities (as false as they are). I suppose in a sense this makes elves "cooler" :D, though to be honest, it also makes the fate of the Dalish somewhat more tragic: for generations they've been trying to upkeep or uncover their lost traditions and splendor, only for DAI/Trespasser/Solas to reveal that it was never what they thought it was, nor would elves of old recognize them as kin :P The Arlathan they yearn to return to would have its gates closed for them, if it was ever managed to be restored - or they would be enslaved, if the ancient culture/Evanuris returned as well. Oh the irony.

iirc mahariel origin was also unpopular due to the fact that many found its story bland or boring or unconnected to the wider game as a whole relative to others like dn, hn, ce.

Really? I feel like City Elf was even less popular than Mahariel. Of course, this is entirely based on the mountain of Alistair fanfic I read, where Cousland was the most popular origin by far.

Seemed like mages were the most popular after that, though, then Mahariel, then city elves. With the poor dwarven origins in dead last - aren't they only, like, five percent of the total playthroughs of Origins?

Anyone here a fan of David Bowie ?

He was my second crush after Solas

Made myself a Bowie Lavelan profile. If I get a lot of patience I might make it a mod too :)

You're totally right on the dwarven origins.

A lot of the CE stuff I see and come across pairs them with Zevran, maybe its that? This is purely subjective tho of course on my part :)

TBH I'm not surprised - dwarven origins were depressing. I honestly think the casteless have it the worst of all discriminated groups :/

I imagine that the Cousland was most popular because of the option to be Queen/King, the others could only hope to be mistresses or companions...I did the Daslish Rogue origin first. Then did a Cousland so I could have at least one fairy-tale ending :D

I seem to always pick one of the least popular origins or characters, no matter what games I play.

I chose to play city elf first, then that glitched and I rerolled and chose a Cousland Warden. Because she gets a dog right away. I'm not even kidding. I modded the game to have the dog as an extra party member in the summon slot the whole time. I didn't know the romance stuff and I never choose for my characters until I actually get to know the companions.

But I'm satisfied. It was a fulfilling journey. At least one of my canon characters is married and at least relatively happy under tough circumstances of that world and situation.

DAI was my first DA elf. And it was a character creation call, just being tired of humans with noble origins/names. Let's play an elf.

Fate sealed. :P

Having played a Mahariel during my first playthrough of DA:O (she is my canon Warden and remained together with Alistair as Wardens), the Dalish have always held a special place in my heart. :P Also, FYI I don't play humans in games where you could choose your race because I find them boooooring af since I'm already human and most video games have you play as a human anyway. Elves for life!  B) (I still give a huge middle finger to DA2 for making me get stuck playing as a human. <_< )

I've always thought that Tabris was more popular than Mahariel due to the number of people I've heard back in the day complaining that the Dalish origin was "boring". But I wouldn't say Mahariel was unpopular. Like, seriously, the Dalish origin is NOT the least popular origin in DA:O. I've seen a good number of fanarts and fanfiction of the Dalish origin. Mage origins, as mentioned by someone earlier, was pretty popular too. Of course the Queen Cousland fics and fanart far exceeds the number of those created for Tabris, Mahariel, Surana, and Amell. (For obvious reasons.) At least during the time of DA:O's popularity.

Then there's the dwarven origins. I think Casteless Dwarf origin might be the least popular, from what I've seen.

I've looked a bit into the differences of elves' design over the course of the game and basically what I got is:

DAO: practically human, just with pointed ears
DAII: made more non-human, huge anime-esque eyes
DA:I: somewhere in-between

Is that actually true? Which parts of DAO and DAII are in current design. Do you guys like it?
