For anyone who is uncomfortable with using Project Elvhen as a reference there's now an alternative source:

http://archiveofouro...chapters/582281

I've known about this for a while, and to be honest, I much prefer it and the Elven Language wiki to Project Elvhen.  Sure, I mostly cannot write entire sentences of Dragon Age Elvish that way, but although I know it's a monumental effort to try to create a conlang, I felt that there's too much direct translation and lack of grammar involved in Project Elvhen.  Some of the words I've seen people use from it in their fics do not match the "feel" of Dragon Age Elvish, which avoids any harsh consonants or consonant-vowel combinations.

So when I write, I only translate a few words at a time, or just write it out in English and tell my readers that my characters are speaking in Elvhen.  Honestly it's probably better that way than having to translate everything all the time--while it's neat to be able to write in elvish, it's also super frustrating for readers to need a translation of everything ever.  Or at least it is for me!  I don't want to have to flip to a dictionary or scroll down to the notes and lose my place--it breaks into my enjoyment of the story.

There is another factor, too:  Words in Elvhen often have multiple meanings, or vague meanings.  It's hard to convey that in a conlang that often translates things directly from English (or whatever language) to the made-up language, pasting the made-up words into familiar grammatical structures.  I know that it works more-or-less this way now, but down the line we might begin to see more use of grammar and syntax as we encounter more elvish in future games/novels/comics.

But again, I get that it's a huge effort and I don't disparage the people who want to use Project Elvhen or the person/people who have worked on it.  It's just not my preference.

The guy who runs project elvhen has a... bad rep in certain places.

And you're right.  A lot of the language doesn't fit the feel of DA.

Knowing from Gaider that Elven avoids harsh consonants, I am forever confused by Cillian from DAI multiplayer.

Like Killian.

I seeeee so like Cillian Murphy. I guess I just assumed since it was an elf's name it would be otherwise ingame. then again we see elves like Cammen in game so it's probably not a hard and fast rule.

ftr I havent played multiplayer enough to have heard it lol.

It's 'cause he's failing at being ancient elvhen on the low down. Obviously.

Haha, most people here are also confused with me being called "Tina" :D But it just happens - I wouldn't be surprised that thousands of years after destruction of Elvenhan the elves have adopted new names or words into their language... especially that most of elves know merely a few words of it now.

Considering he was First before whats-her-name and they are in the same clan, he's probably not ancient.  He also has a particular affection for humans (over other elves, it would appear).

Quite possibly so. I'm just poking good fun at the theories that were floating around. :)

This was basically what I was thinking about Cillian's name (and Cammen, totally forgot about him, poor guy). Glad to see it vindicated, I would hate to have to change my canon Inky's name!

And its so true about languages evolving, names getting adopted, altered, etc. Cultures aren't homogeneous and they change through time, primarily through contact with other peoples. In fact, before I was married, I was a non-Jew with a Jewish last name. Now I'm married, a Jewish convert, and have a non-Jewish last name (it's an Anglicized Greek name). And I'm 87% Anglo/Celtic according to a DNA panel.

I think I'm gonna keep my canon Inky's name as Celebrian.

About...?

ME: Andromeda? Or Star Wars?

I watched the press conference until they started doing demos of games I have no interest in, and the only BioWare games were ME and Star Wars. Sort of disappointing not to hear anything about the new IP or a DA4 greenlight, but not unexpected.

I watched the video ... the graphics look cool but I wasn't exactly pleased with the "we must find a new home for humanity" line.  So, great we invade another galaxy?  Bleh.

Andromeda in general. New Asari, fem PC lead in vid, how pretty it looks, theories confirmed, etc.

I'm easily pleased though so BioWare could poop and label it BioWare and I'd be happy. Understand a lot of folk aren't happy with what they saw, that's fine too. :)

I haven't actually played any of the Mass Effect games yet. I do have 1-3 but haven't loaded them or played them yet. I will at some point? But I'm more into fantasy than sci fi, for RPGs, anyway.

The graphics were indeed gorgeous, but yeah, the premise of expanding our species beyond our native planet is problematic, to say the least... I mean, we can't even look after the planet we have so it doesn't seem right to go mess up other planets.

I agree.  I'm a little worried about the plotline.  But I'm going to trust in the team that they've got something good.  Plus, I'm wondering if we'll have a chance to play as a villian?  A villian who doesn't see themselves as a villian is something I love in fiction.

Obviously, since you hang out in the Blanketfort.  ;D

(TBH, I don't really see Solas as a villain. Like, I know he is being set up to be a villain but I have hopes for him coming around to a less destructive plan.)

He is a villian, but only in the way EVERY DA villian is one.  He sees himself as doing what he must.  Same with Loghain, Meredith and Anders.

Have to say Andromeda looks great, and I got really excited when I saw the female protagonist. I may have to overcome my horror of guns to try this next year.
