The mowhawk and dreads hearken back to early concept art of Solas.

The tribal thing fits with his being a god of rebellion. The Evanuris and company are typically depicted as being quite schmancy in their dress in fan-art, so tribal Solas naturally stands out as a contrast.

Personally, I like the humble monk vibe they've got going. But I also enjoy indulgent drawings of Solas in his more flamboyant youth. :)

Judging by his get-up in Trespasser, Solas is willing to go the glitz and glamour route as well. Though in the time of the Evanuris, he dressed humbly, according to the Codex entries.

That just means his knee-faces and wolf pelts were tame compared to what the other Evanuris were wearing. *thinks of the most OTT feathers and glitter outfits*

Well what the propaganda piece said is that he has "humble guises", which could mean that he adapted the whole 'hiding-in-plain-sight-humble-apostate' shtick simply to fly under the radar. His frescoes do show him in pretty rich robes though, heavy and embellished with tassels, beads and gold... although how do they compare to typical ancient elvhen fashion is an unknown. It could as well be that compared to Elvenhan even the whole Queen band may look like paupers :P

You wouldn't happen to have his early concept's image stored somewhere, would you?

You can google it. Here's a link to a scan on the Dragon Age wiki of some pages from The Art of Dragon Age: Inquisition book: http://vignette4.wik...=20141215032757

It's a .png so it won't let me embed it in the post.  sorry.

Those versions in the bottom left would easily give away that there is something special about him. If you want to disguise yourself as an average joe, less is always more.

Kinda like the difference between DAO Flemeth and DA2 Flemeth. Speaking of which, why was her design different back then?

Was it because she didn't even want to be recognized as Flemeth from the legends or because that really is how she originally was intended to look like?

I think any answer as to whether she didn't want to be recognized or not would be purely speculative. To respond to the second part of your question, though, I think the Origins engine had some very strong limitations to what it could accomplish in terms of appearance. The dragon-horn hairstyle she started wearing in DA2, for example, was likely not possible in Origins.

Isabela also looked very different in Origins. I was surprised by how young she looked in DA2 compared to how old and world-weary she looked in Origins.

Fern, that is amazing! So much dedication and talent. 75 Hours! :o

I love all of the small elfy and book details!

:wizard: P-wiz sticker for you!

Thank you hun :). Shari gave me the idea of putting gold on the books to make them elfy. I was kinda disgusted by how much time it took . I kind of gave up after 50 hours and thought 'okay this is just gonna take as long as it needs to'. Usually my 'big ones' take about 35 hours, but apparently doing a background doubled the time.

I just finished the Trespasser DLC so I'm 8 months late than most people on this thread. LOL

Compelled to write a monologue from the perspective of the romanced Lavellan that might be relevant to recent world events. I am not a writer so be kind!!!

BTW, thank you bioware team for making this tremendous game!

Lavellan:

Solas, I understand that you must continue this journey of no return. You must correct the mistakes that your younger self made a long ago in order to preserve your true identity, pride.

I, as the inquisitor will help you see another way - as a next evolution for all collective consciousness in all lands - including yourself, to overcome pride. First, perfection is a lost and dangerous cause. There is no idea, no one being, no event that has ever been or will be perfect. Your pursuit of it will simply destroy the essence of existence (e.g. where each day we strive to become a become version of ourselves) and take away the most beautiful things in life that are near perfection, such as our love.

Second, you are not the lone savior of world's problems. No single "he", "she" or "it" can be.   You need to help others to see what you see: teach them, love them, and treat them as if they are your own. Likewise, you need to see what others see, including those who you consider to be your people, and those who are not. There is knowledge that can be learned from all beings, both ancient and new, and those who are very different from you. As I have proven again and again, you can be wrong.

Third, there is hope. In the direst parts of the Fade, I am sure that you have dreamed it. It may be faint at times when we lose our focus and strength, but it can be found.  I will find it for you, even if you are the Dread Wolf and the lonely path seems to be the only way. Because the answer is not within the Fade, it is within you. I have seen a glimpse of it and I will help you find it.  We cannot dream our lives away- we need real action to make our dreams possible.

Finally once pride is overcome, you will no longer be an immortal and we can be together in love- the only perfection, savior and hope that exist.

There were a few other things they wanted to do in Origins as well ... put horns on the qunari and brands on the foreheads of the Tranquil.  Although I'm not sure if it was engine limitations that prevented those or not, tbh.  But I wouldn't be surprised.

Hey guys, apologies if this has already been brought up, but I was browsing tumblr and someone made a gifset on the characters commenting on the terrain, and someone made one of Solas saying in The Western Approach:

"This is when I appreciate learning the magic to prevent sunburn on a bald head."

Has anyone actually heard him say this? During my latest playthrough I, unfortunately, spent about 8 hours in The Western Approach because I had awful dropprates for the class quest items (Alpha Quillback Spines *shudder*) and I never got this out of him.

I don't know why but I find it hilarious. I hope it's true! xD

Yes, I've heard him say it the few times I was lucky to get banter in the Western Approach. :D

It's probably something to do with the engine but also - I mean, how weird would it have been if Flemeth did look like that in DAO? Would you have bought that she's just some random apostate living in the woods? And who would she be dressing up for, the toads?

Her appearance in DA2 made a bit more sense because she's obviously A) Trying to impress Hawke and co. and B) She just transformed from a giant darkspawn chompin' dragon, I don't think trying to sell herself as just some crazy old hermit would really work.

After they probably kept the appearance because it's more iconic and Flemeth had no real reason to try and hide her true nature. I mean the next time we really see her after that she confesses to be Mythal and starts mind-controlling people left and right.

I don't think the Qunari horns were an engine limitation, they just couldn't (or wouldn't) redesign helmets to get them to work with horned characters.

Been helping my sister with some work today and we've watched some Disney movies while busy with stuff, among them: Hercules.

And it hit me that if DA was a typical Disney movie, Solas would totally sing this in Solavellan worldstate - gender-swapped ofc, prior to balcony scene. Cole is totes singing with the Muses:

And now they don't have to because they've suddenly decided yeah like it's really HOT in Seheron and Par Vollen yeah OH! and they use this nifty totally-poisonous-to-other-races paint stuff ... yeah and they paint themselves with that yeah.  Like, who needs armor and helmets, right?

Not mocking you, Ellawynn ... you're probably right about the helmets.  I *am* mocking the vitaar, though.

Yeah, the vitaar doesn't make any sense at all really  both the "poisonous to other races (Why not just paint it on armor?)" and the "makes Qunari skin tough as metal somehow (Although, they at least at kaddis in the first game, so I guess it was kinda implied to exist?)."

But on the other hand, I do like how it's served to make the Qunari more visually distinct.

...But it also paved the way for Viddisala and that stupid book she has strapped to her shoulder.

Nevermind I hate it.

Well, it's possible that teh Vitaar is useless on anything other than Qunari skin (since the point of it is that it reacts with the body, making i stronger), so why paint it on armor at all? I mean, isn't it the same with lyrium? Mages can chug it all day long - while non-mages experience all kinds of side-effects.

Also - Viddasala wasn't a warrior, but a priest, so the book isn't any more silly than funky Adrastian sails hats :D She was never referred to as 'he' (as any actual Qunai who is a warrior, since for Qunari a 'female warrior' is an oxymoron) and aside form failed attempt at Solas's life we never see her fight; she sends her goons after us, including her pet Sareebas, who apparently does all the fighting for her.

I know in game codexes aren't always accurate but it does say that it's magical (because qunari love magic, right?!) and it's poisonous to other races.  So it's not just useless anything other than qunari skin, it's fatal.  Although apparently this information was gathered by a Tevinter mage studying the vitaar so it may be accurate.  It just seems like a stretch to me lol.

Her being a priest isn't what really matters - I mentioned it because the vitaar is a symptom of the Qunari's beach-babe-bondage porn style, which the Viddisala's outfit similarly is styled after.

I beg to differ about it looking as dumb as the Chantry's hats. I mean yeah, the Chantry's hats look pretty dumb, but could you imagine having that giant book stuck on your shoulder all day? How does she not fall over? Or get major shoulder aches? And there's way no it serves any practical purpose because of how many knots you'd have to untie just to open it up or stick it back on.

It was just... a really bizarre design choice to me, and every time I saw it I was like "Man, it is way harder than it should be to take you seriously." Her almost-as-equally-awful looking headpiece didn't help matters.

I didn't say that it's specifically magic - I was merely making an analogy. There's obviously something to Qunari skin that makes them be able to use vitaar poisonous to other... you know - like lactose intolerance. Or perhaps it's like Iron Bull's resistance to poison - it's mostly trained.
