To be fair the devs have had some pretty negative experiences on the forums.  It's a positive thing for us on our special little corner of the internet.  I am not happy with the decision, but in the age of entitlement on the 'net I am not surprised by the decision.  Also expect more game companies to make a similar choice.  Throwing the baby out with the bath water.  The bad ruin it for the good, etc etc.

 

Wherever everyone decides to migrate to I am sure I will lurk and occasionally post there as well.

To be fair, Gaider and the other devs have had some pretty awful experiences on the forums. I can understand them not wanting to come around and not being too broken up about this. Plus, forums in general have grown less and less popular during the rise of social media. Which is bullshit, because the popular social media sites are awful for having honest discussion. But such is the way of the modern internet. I miss those wild west days.

 

But yeah, he could show a little sympathy for the fans that never did anything bad and are just getting caught in the cross fire. As I recall, he even said he liked the Solas thread for being even-headed compared to the rest of the forums.

I think I remember him referring to the thread as a unicorn. Sadly for a lot of people the negative will leave a stronger impression than the positive.

In case anyone is interested, there's a small enclave of current & former Blanketfort users (so a lot of Solas fans), over on this forum, which @Tess put together for the writers and artists who hang out here, and is open to multi-fandom discussion:

It's not super active, but anyone is welcome to come and chat, post art and writing and crafts, and make requests for new topics, etc. She says it might be a short delay on new member approvals, but she'll take all comers.

 

This is a safe and respectful place for writers and artists of all fandoms.  Currently the mods are Tess and myself. We welcome any of you who are looking for a more private forum. Meaning non-members can't read posts. Yes, it's small, but it's still new and growing.

You guys!!!! There are tears threatening to spill over this. I needed this thread after Inquisition. I'd never used the forums before, but there I was seeking comfort in the arms of strangers. I found it. Things tended to get a little more heated on other threads, but even outside the Fort I've found interesting conversations. There's so much lore theory on this forum, and it will be a shame to lose it. I'll miss the BSN so much...

 

I want to be able to talk to you all when news of DA4 comes out. I want to share that new experience with you all, so...I'll go where you go. Can you guys actually give a link to this RDF you're talking about? I haven't heard of it before. I'm just getting something about radar and lasers. That can't be right...

Unless the statement they've released truly is the whole of it and they really think that just cus they don't visit the forum, we shouldn't, either...

I suspect it's because of media. You see EA is catering to young kids (Sims 4 was proof of it and admitted by them) and now the new ME and DA games will reel in many youths and where do most youths go? Twitter, FB and Reddit of course! Tumblr too! This forum had all ages, many memories and people who were too wise to the marketing ploys as well as able to point out the many flaws they tried to cover when something failed. This way they keep the fans talking but cater to those who won't go deep into things and point out stuff that's bad for them.

 

I feel bad for Conal though. It's like he picked the short straw and was fed to us wolves.

I just wanted to thank you guys, really. After finishing trespasser, the Solas thread was one I'd always return to to follow everyone's comments and interesting discussions and fan work. I could appreciate not only Solas more, but the whole of Inquisition and the rest of the DA series. So yeah. Thank you c:

Right? I talked to him way back in KOTOR days on the boards! Anyway, I know he had problems here as did other devs because of trolling asshats. But I don't care if the devs aren't here at all. I don't come here to talk to the devs. I come here to read awesome theories and to see amazing fan art. I come here to discuss the story and the characters.

 

I have to say that this feels like a gut punch to me. It feels like we're being punished because of internet trolls and it doesn't seem like that's the way you should treat your fans. I'm disappointed and sad. I mean, how about getting real moderators over here? That's 99% of the problem, really.

I don't think this is indicative of BioWare's financial status as a whole. Forums are just a dying frontier. The audience (And thus, the market) for places like Twitter and Reddit are bigger, so companies don't see whole lot of point anymore in investing time and money into a forum that gives much smaller returns, and caters mostly to people who have already bought your product (And thus don't need to have it marketed to them some more.) It's sad, but you'll probably see a lot more well-to-do companies axing their official forums so they can focus their efforts on Twitter.

 

But the devs and writers didn't make this decision. They're probably ultimately powerless to change it, too. There's no point in blaming them.

Absolutely! We haven't separated fandoms yet because there were only a handful of active members. It's not too difficult to add new sections or even combine sections.  (we did have separate writer and artist sections, but we are heavy on active artists and not so with writers)

Probably multiple factors.  Cost is more than likely the biggest reason.  Why spend money running this place when the staff don't want to participate?  I think they might be looking at it more from the perspective of "we prefer to use twitter and reddit to communicate what we need to the fans" so the forums are a waste.  I don't believe that they are just trying to quell negative feedback or anything like that; but avoiding nasty backlash scenarios like there's been in the past.  We are a very passionate bunch, but sometimes some of us are not constructive at all. 

I don't use these forums for potential BioWare interactions.  Never have.  I participated for the community interaction.  It's so disappointing that that facet wasn't high enough on the list when they made the decision.  I really believe that to blot out the bad you have to spend time and energy on shining the light on the good.  It's too bad that the bad is what everyone saw.  (I avoided this place like the plague until DAI because uggggh wow intimidating, there were so many not nice people)  The days of official forums are probably close to coming to an end.  I firmly believe that if more fan interactions were like our little slice of heaven, things like this wouldn't be as likely to happen.
