It does seem like Viv and Solas are foils. Elf from a small village vs high society and everything else. I dig the contrast.

I don't like it.At all.

I know it will grow on me.

But I thought he was really cute.Not a top model .But still cutie pie.

I'm having a hard time with the new screen shots ,to be honest.

 

On the bright side , well he's a great and fascinating guy.So I'll suck it up and just try to be less shallow.

Okay, now that that's out of my system....I'm really liking his new face! It's more exotic than the old one. I think someone else also said it was cat-like? He also now reminds me of Imhotep from the Mummy, which is perfectly fine as Arnold Vosloo was super fine in that movie. Side note: Do I have a thing for bald men? It seems I do. 

 

I'm also loving how our dear Solas is a scruffy, nerdy hedge mage. That makes me love him even more, if that's at all possible. He shall have all the hugs from me my inquisitor.

Apparently in the Patrick Weekes interview that got taken down: 

"[PW]:Absolutely. Vivienne is as loyal a Circle mage as you’ll find, so having this scruffy little hedge mage pop in and say, “You’re all close-minded, you should be making friends with spirits,” causes her to get icily disdainful as only Vivienne can. Solas and the Iron Bull also spar over Qunari beliefs, as Solas believes in freedom of thought more than anything else, and the Qunari tend to be pretty rigid there. On the other hand, Solas and Cole get along rather wonderfully."

 

So just as I thought Solas and Vivienne will act as foils to each other. I thought so because their appearances and personalities seem to be opposites. The interview says that their beliefs will be basically opposites also. I didn't expect much disagreement with the Iron Bull, because I thought he was not devout to the Qun despite having some loyalty to it. I always knew the Cole and him would get along, they will probably be best friends. 

 

 

I think there's a hint here that Solas while being well versed with the Fade and it's occupants, he's not the most graceful when dealing with flesh and blood beings. The way he describes Solas' relation to Viv for example makes me think he comes at her and her beliefs in the worst way possible. "You're close-minded" is just about the worst way you can go about trying to get people to broaden their outlook. I suspect it may be the same with Iron Bull who won't try to convert anyone but he will take issue with people talking smack about the Qun.

I don't know how accurate is this Dragon Age Tarot deck, but it's possible they went just for the imagery part. After all, Death looks cooler than The Hermit, don't you think? The thing is, I don't see Solas as Death at all. Death is a lot about accepting that something must end to give place to something new. It's a passive card, not always a negative one, that relates to the sentiment of grief. Just so you understand, if you want a DA character that really impersonates Death, that character is Fenris.

 

Aaaaaand now I'll zip my mouth before I derail from topic too much!  If people still wanna talk about it I'll gladly join the conversation.

I hope they at least put some thought into allocating what character to what card. It seems like they did, because Dorian seems to be the Hierophant from his pose on the card and that matches him. Death does look cooler than the hermit - someone has to be each card though! Death is also a lot about change. I guess Solas seems to advocate for significant change a lot in that he thinks mages should be making friends with spirits which is against what Circle mages are taught... Beyond that, back in the old Solas thread there were some different things about Solas as Death that came up in discussion [quoting some here]:

 

- "Falon'Din is the elven god of Death and Fortune and guides the dead to the Beyond. In ancient times instead of dying, elves would enter the long sleep and walk paths beyond the Veil with Falon'Din and his brother Dirthamen. Solas, we're told, is a "fade expert". Falon'Din must know the Fade well if he guided sleepers along its "shifting paths". It was speculated that Solas will be the one who can guide the Inquisitor in or at least about the Fade."

- "Side note #2: We also wondered if this could indicate a link between Solas and the necromancer mage-specialization [we now know Dorian is probably the necromancer while Solas is a rift mage]"

- "Felassan knew he could probably avoid immediate death in the Fade by living in fear for the rest of his life, but instead chose to give in to the inevitable end peacefully.  The Death card could imply that he was reborn or transformed into something else *cough* Solas *cough*.  Elves and humans seem to believe in an eternal soul, so perhaps someone (Felassan's master or someone else) reconnected his soul to another body through necromancy.  Felassan obviously had above-average Fade knowledge so that that lines up (and plenty of people have talked at length on that).  The change, death, rebirth idea could also refer to an elf waking from the uthenera.  Perhaps he gained his Fade knowledge from "living" in the Fade for centuries.  He wouldn't necessarily have to wake from the uthenera naturally or on his own, some sort of necromancy could be involved there too and might tie in to how we unlock the necro specialization (kind of how I think we could learn the Champion spec when we meet Ser Michel, omg I hope we meet Ser Michel"

- "Some additional things: In some tarot decks Death is depicted wearing a full suit of armour. In others it's a skeleton, representing that the inner self (the skeleton) is the most durable part of the physical self. Again relating to Solas's role as Fade expert - it's the inner self not the physical self that enters the Fade, most of the time. It can also mean harsh fate which does not consider personal feelings and (reversed) the loss of a friendship. Solas pls don't break my heart...    He does look like an extremely pragmatic and clinical kinda guy.."

 

I prefer Solas as the Hermit now though, it fits with the new info we have on him.

 

I think it's interesting. I posted a tarot speculation thread about all the characters back in late May. Speculating about Solas's tarot cards is totally on topic because it's about Solas, and I'm sure a few small tangents from there would be tolerated and not get you tossed out the thread. x) Not that I encourage going wildly off-topic.

?? Death isn't passive, that's the Hanged Man. Death is the card about CHANGE IS HERE whether your ass likes it or not. The Hanged Man is about choosing to allow the realise the need for change. Death represents change that will drag you kicking and screaming until you start to move with it...

I thought hedge mages were capable of weird and unpredictable things because they didn't know how to channel their magic? Solas seems to be well practiced, I assumed he'd learnt a bit of unusual magic from spirits.

I think the animator a need to study anatomy more... Between this and putting Sera's breasts on the bottom of her ribs, I question their knowledge...
